also, xbox one was a complete failure. like, a MASSIVE failure for microsoft. if it had sold as well as the ps4, i guarantee they wouldn't be doing this
ms and nintendo just saw an opportunity for mutual benefit
saying ms and nintendo are not competitors is dangerous though i think ... they definitely are
I mean Nintendo's just kind of gone off and done its own thing since the Wii, Switch is a handheld when you get down to it. Switches selling doesn't really hurt MS in the way PS4s might, even less if those Switches are playing Micrsoft's games.
I'm sure they'll yank it back sooner or later and they'll try to make Windows Store A Thing on PC again because they are very stupid, but it's funny to watch them act like they've almost learned something for the umpteenth time.
I actually think nintendo's strategy of making underpowered consoles has been pretty smart, you don't have to bother competing with the big boys and you can essentially manufacture your own market just by building a significantly cheaper machine than everyone else
The downside of the less powerful console, I guess, is developers can't port their new games over as easily, which I can only imagine is a turn off. Not that Nintendo was particularly good at the whole third party thing before the Wii and such. Didn't they piss a bunch of them off in the SNES era?
tbob i think it's more that all the companies are competing for the total time people play games. switch is the only popular handheld right now, but google's thing is going to work on mobile, as will microsoft's xcloud thing... handheld isn't going to be a differentiator in 10 years

I used to think that, but looking at it now that makes no sense because third party devs happily developed for x360 and ps3. they may have roughly equal power but the processor architecture of the ps3 is completely different.
yeah, I mean the fact that it existed as a concept has been well known for a long time, but I don't think anyone realised there was actually a prototype out there

I remember a lot of devs being annoyed with the PS3 but the Wii literally couldn't run their games, which the PS3 could despite being a pain in the dick.
