Nintendo has the exclusive right to perform the games publicly

this is such bullshit, though i suppose it's true

So does this also apply to like... boardgames too? Like playing a boardgame in public and/or recording it could get you in "trouble"? That seems so... inane.

like what does Nintendo think they'll gain from this? I'm trying my best to comprehend why they'd do this. Do they think they'll lose money if people upload videos of their games?

Hell, most companies WANT people to upload videos of their games, it's free publicity. Just.... nintendo, what are you thinking.
i'm pretty convinced it's just like a small group of old japanese dudes who take way too much pride in their games and have some sort of misguided belief system
They most likely thought something along the lines of "We better not have people advertize a free and better tool than Super Mario Maker"

i don't actually think this is true, but it's probably true if the person playing the game is making money, which i assume is where the problem is. it's still dumb though

I'm guessing this is just another one of those things Nintendo is stubbornly behind on, and then in another year or two they're going to fully embrace it in some weird way no one will see coming.

I'm really torn on if I want Mario Maker or not. On the one hand I love all the features and some of the levels I've seen look amazing. On the other hand, I'm not much for designing levels, most of the user made levels will probably be garbage, and there isn't going to be a strong sense of progression. Normally I'd wait until a price drop on something I'm so on the fence about, but it's a Mario game, so...

I was thinking about this, too.  Most people haven't tried user-made levels before like we have via rom hacks, so I think they might be in for a surprise when they realize that there's a lot more to designing levels than they may have thought.  Most rom hacks are garbage for this reason.  On the other hand, now there will be millions of people designing instead of a handful of rom-hacking nerds, and if only the cream floats to the top, we might see the best levels ever.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

There will be user rankings so you can easily find the highest ranked levels, but that filter won't be in place in the 100 Mario challenge, which is the closest thing to an actual game in the package. Plus I have a feeling a bunch of bullshit kaizo levels are going to get high ratings from people who mistake difficulty for quality.

That's what I was referring to when I said that the cream would rise to the top.

I would think that a crazy-hard level wouldn't get a high rating because so few people would be able to even play it.  I predict that the highest rated levels will have some kind of gimmick, theme, or joke involved.  I mean, when you think about levels that are designed by nintendo like in NSMB or SMB or SMW etc they're all just kind of there - like they're all the same.  One that you hate might stick out, but for the most part they're all forgettable.  What do you do to make one stand out?  If it's simply well done then there will be plenty others that are also simply well done, so it disappears.

That's a fair point.

Either way, I won't get it today. Might as well let there be a solid buildup of great levels before I jump in.

that's what i'm gonna do. buy it in like a year when it's cheaper and has tons of good levels. i have no interest in designing levels myself
Same here.

Has slopes, completely inaccurate 0/10

Nah, for real though I will pay whatever they are asking for to get this.

what a great idea, how it changes every time

wonder if they're procedurally generated (would be cool) instead of like 425245212 pre-built stages

man that intro sounds so japanese

Trying to code a quick and decently full-featured platform physics engine in Game Maker... it was all going smoothly until I got to wall jumping, for which it's seemingly impossible to implement the "smooth" feel of switching between left and right buttons and maintaining momentum.
i'm not sure what you mean. like your vertical momentum seems slow?
I like turtles.
Nah, you know how, when you walljump in Mega Man X or something, you have to hold toward the wall to be able to slide down it, but to move in the direction you jump from the wall you have to switch buttons from left to right or right to left?  Getting that switch was really hard.  I eventually got it to work though.

The only thing that remains unsolved is this stubborn tendency for the player, if the jump key and both left and right are pressed simultaneously in just the right place, to be able to jump straight up and "climb" the wall without having some forced momentum away from the wall.  I've been trying to fix that longer than any other single part of this engine.

and now you know why metroid games are so broken ;)
I like turtles.
Heh, yeah, I'm definitely going for the more MMX or Super Meat Boy way of single-wall walljumping rather than just straight up vertically climbing a sheer wall without much visible departure from it.
i know in the gba metroids, you have to be touching the wall and facing it before you turn around. then it gives you a 10 frame window to walljump once you turn around.

Inputs for mine are definitely simpler, you just have to be holding toward the wall (the "sliding down the wall" sprite is distinct from the jumping one) and hit jump and it flings you away a set distance.  Attached if you're interested.  Arrows move, shift is run button, Z jumps.

ah, jumper style

i personally prefer that way of wall jumping, don't like having to press the opposite direction before pressing jump when sliding down a wall
