What'd you say?

This. Working as a pizza delivery guy, I'm probably gonna die of a heart attack in a couple years. So worth it though...

Zoinks!  That's one seriously fucked up loophole.

I don't think Dark Souls discourages the player from exploring its worlds. If the player feels that way, they're merely too afraid of dying. The game is also rather fair, you can always retrieve your souls on a second attempt. And if you've made it to spot X once, one has to assume to assume that you can make it there again under more favorible conditions.

I don't think it's possible to be too afraid of dying where one death sets you back to the last bonfire (which are far too scarce) and any additional ones cause you to forfeit the one resource that would allow you to have an easier time of it.  Eventually with DS I just felt my time was being wasted rather than my skills tested.  Last time I play, I gave up around Blighttown when trying to kill Quelaag, dying, getting sent back to the Undead Burg (thanks for killing the Firelink Bonfire, game), having to trudge back, dying in a hurry, lather, rinse, repeat.  Learning boss patterns would be all well and good if that's actually what most of each attempt was made up of.
That game looks so cool but it sounds SO frustrating.

Gotta learn faster, and also just use summons

There are two bonfires in Blighttown. One's at the very bottom close to the boss. Actually, almost all bosses have bonfires very close to them. Iirc there's only one boss for which that isn't the case.

They're all over the place. :/ Not to mention there are a lot of shortcuts you can unlock to make travelling more comfortable.

It's fine, you just need to play with attention and care. It's frustrating if you don't do that, though. I'm a super chill person and even I've verbally cursed at the games a few times.

I always recommend to play Demon's Souls first though. It's a good introduction to the series because it's got the most accessible lore and story, best atmosphere, and is less open in the beginning so it might be the best for beginners to get a feel for the gameplay.

I can think of at least Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles, and Stray Demon right off the top of my head that make you slog back through a good chunk of the levels they're in from the nearest bonfire before you can even get another shot at them.

I mean, I've found shortcuts here and there, but I wouldn't say that any of them bring the world traversal anything close to the realm of "comfortable."

I think the quality of the experience just overall hinges on whether you already have a sufficiently extensive knowledge of the game.  Which is fine in and of itself, but from what I've played, trying to rectify one's status as a novice is difficult because of how opaque everything is.
Sounds like the learning curve is beyond my patience level, which has diminished over time.  Years ago I would have eaten it up.

Yeah, I've noticed myself that I have much less desire to put up with a game I don't feel is engaging from the start.  Like, I'm sure DS is rewarding when you learn it, but I've never been able to fathom how the learning process itself is enjoyable.

Oh, by the way, I never said thanks for checking out the blog post ryu.

That's a totally fair assessment. It's definitely not for everyone, but the fact that you can learn what you need if you slow down and watch instead of the game asking you to rely on twitchy reflex type stuff is why I could get into Dark Souls despite being awful at video games.

I'll grant you Taurus Demon, for a new player that can be a trek, though it is much shorter than it seems and there's an item sort of hidden along the way there that helps you wreck his shit so exploring is actually super helpful and encouraged in the Burg. But I mean the Gargoyles have a bonfire about a minute from them, another is maybe two minutes away due to elevator action being needed. And Stray Demon has one in the room right next to him, actually, two adjacent rooms have one I think. Granted on that one the first time you see him you may not have had the chance to use them given how you start that fight, but they are probably closer than any other bonfire to the boss.

You would have loved Nito's bonfire run! Or Seathe's! Those can be beastly.

Anyway, yeah, exploration is a huge part of Dark Souls and, generally, doing so will make your experience better and the world is really interconnected an cool which makes it worth the time no matter what you find. One does have to accept that they will be killed along the way, possibly a lot, that's just sort of how the game works and any one person may or may not be down with it, but to say it's discouraged is inaccurate. The risk of resource loss is there but losing your souls is actually not a big deal, they are literally everywhere and you get loaded down with more consumables that give them to you than you will know what to do with, and ultimately your level doesn't matter much.

It really just comes down to whether exploring it sounds fun or not, playing afraid to lose is a great way to make the game a miserable experience, if the game becomes a chore then by all means stop playing! If it's not fun or interesting then there's no point. It's fine! I'm just glad to see people try the game and see what they think instead of getting scared off by what the overly dramatic internet says it is. Even if one doesn't enjoy it I think it's ideas are interesting enough to make it worth trying if nothing else.

Gotta love how close of a decision the fate of the animals in Super Metroid is during a GDQ.

wonder what the devs would think of that feature being worth so much.

i've watched a few of the runs so far and i'm really liking how they're not reading many donations this year. makes it way more enjoyable
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I didn't see any of it this year. I checked through the schedule, and all of the ones I wanted to see (far fewer this year) were all on at stupid o'clock. Fingers crossed for the next one.

They do put the runs on youtube if you want to watch them.

i used youtube for all the ones i watched. who watches anything live these days lol

lol, of course they bring in nolan north
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Some actors aren't cut out for voice work I guess. Although it could easily be the director's fault as well. Dinklage is a talented guy in front of a camera, it's hard to imagine that some of that at least wouldn't translate to voice work as well.

But now that we're deleting people in favour of Nolan North, all bets are off. How long before everyone in every game in history is Nolan North? Nut long, friends, not long.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
It's not that surprising really, voice acting is a whole different animal than on camera.

eh i wouldn't mind if nolan north did every voice in every game. nn is great

I know people harp on how people like North and Blum only do "that one voice" in everything never. And even if that were actaully the case they do damn good work and so who actually gives a shit, I'd rather have them in everything than the astounding no name cast of Other M.
red chamber dream
yep. of course it's not the case though, it's just that devs often specifically hire him to do "nathan drake voice" so that's what he does. he's done tons of cartoon work where you wouldn't recognize him though.
