That pretty much displays everything I have come to hate about Sonic games. Gone are the clever levels, which are fun to explore and take in the scenery, not to mention the cool secrets to be found. It's now just go fast, can't see shit, 'cause you're going so fast, and you can't take in the level. They've even all but removed the ring mechanic, which used to be a core element, and your means of staying alive, whereas now they just seem like the rings are there in a nice little line, as it's the only way to collect some rings as you're zipping past.
Yeah, I've had a chance to play the demo for Generations by this point, and while my feelings towards Modern Sonic have improved slightly after having seen it firsthand, I still prefer Classic by a long shot. No contest. I still feel like I have no control whatsoever over Modern Sonic even after playing through that level a bunch of times, where as with Classic I'm zipping around and could actually feel myself getting better at the Green Hill level almost every time I played it.
And if I remember right, rings do refill your boost meter a little with Modern, don't they? (Something I would ALWAYS run out of before the end of the level) Other than that they don't serve as much of a purpose, especially because you can just use the homing attack on enemies so that if you know they are there you'll never run into them.
Edit: Having just watched that video, why does it feel like he cut out the majority of the level simply by running across the water all the time like that? There were a ton of platforms and ramps above his head as he went along.
Not really. The original few games had around six or seven zones, with two levels in each, and a short level in each for the boss fights (Sonic 1). Robotnik appeared as the boss in a different ship in each zone.

Because he did, and that's pretty awesome actually.
Yeah, when I stop to think about what happened it's quite ingenious because I'd never think to do that on my own. It's the kind of trick we'd all be praising if it were a Metroid title, and yet the first thing my mind thought of is the fact that the trick cut all of the challenge out of the level. I seriously need to expand my speed running mentality to other games besides Metroid. Sonic is built for this sort of thinking, and heck I was even speed running the two demo stages just a few days ago, so I know speed runs and sequence breaks exist outside of what we do here.
In short, I'm being stupid and the video is awesome despite being Modern Sonic, which I have a grudge against it would seem.
Oh, and I haven't played the full version of Generations yet, but I've heard varying rumors about the level spread between Classic and Modern. One of which was that each character has something like 5 acts in each world, which sounds like a ton compared to the original 3 Sonic games.
I'm pretty sure it does. I've seen a few videos of people playing the first couple of stages (or else it was from an advanced demo or something because I think it was only Green Hill I saw) and it had the S rating in some of them.
i think paraxade didn't get an S because he just rushed through and didn't get many rings and didn't kill many enemies. the ranking system in sonic was sadly never about pure speed.
wasn't someone talking about wanting a jak & daxter collection on ps3? looks like it's happening, obviously
That should be cool. Providing the price is right, I'd probably get it to enjoy the first in HD, and it may prompt me to play further into Jak Theft Auto the others.
i'm sure it'll be 40 usd like all the other collections. highly recommend jak ii btw: i liked the first game a lot, but ii was just so unexpected and awesome. and really fucking hard. jesus christ that is one difficult game.
