I have a little suggestion that you could try to do to these forums:
Maybe you could make it so that all topics beyond page xy gets instantly locked so as to produce these pros:
1. Bumping lessened slightly
2. Mods work less ;)

Just thinking about the community.....
Thread title:
imo, legitimate uses of the forum should not be curtailed due to misuse. it is the abusers (and the mods) of the forum who should take the fall.

I really don't see how either of those are pros, anyhow. Mods generally don't mind the work, and bumping isn't really a problem. We can just delete the post or warn the user, no big deal.

At least I am trying to make a difference, yet gloriously failing in that task.

Damn, it seems to be a lot harder to help people these days.....

Difficult to "help" people when the system they're operating works fine as is and they're not asking for help. We are always open to suggestions, though.

I dont see how that could be fair to the topic sometimes. What if its a good, informative topic that everyone enjoys? I mean sure, if its loaded with spam, go ahead and lock it, but if the mods are doing their jobs it wouldve been locked long before the so-called page number came around. But there are some great many-paged topics that would be rude to lock, like the "Introduce Yourself Here" thread, or the avi/sig thread. Not gonna be pretty if it keeps getting locked and reborn, and locked and reborn, and locked and reborn...
... which is more work for the mods. suddenly, the status quo doesn't seem quite so bad.

The last thing a forum needs is to be similar to GameFAQs...

Another suggestion:
Make a memorable thread part for this forum.  Put all threads that create/have many memories and put them in there so that everyone else knows which threads are like the best threads in the whole forums.
hmm, sounds like a cool post for me to make when i'm bored.
I think your first idea is bad, sometimes topics can still be useful even after they fall to the second page, especially in the parts of m2k2 that are more active (such as The Boardwalk).

As for your second idea, we already have a search function here, and it would be a LOT of work for someone to do that, not to mention all of the requests from people to add their topics to it.  The closest thing I have seen to that is on benheck where there is a sticky that contains links to useful information (mostly links to the 'net, though there are a few topics there) about the portable (and the electronics it contains) you are building, and since Metroid is a lot more popular than homebrew handhelds, the list would be huge.

Well, I have problems finding all those 'memorable threads' that other people love to look at because, well, I AM NEW.

Anyways, screw all these suggestions, it seems I can't help, but of course, you guys aren't requiring help.....

When people don't ask for help, you don't help them unless the contribution is both useful and achievable in a short timespan. Your first idea was outright bad, your second idea would waste too much time from the administration. Simple as that.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
I have a suggestion: stop making suggestions.

HAHAHAH, I'M THE FUNNY ONE!
Would it be possible to put in a quick-post box?
i don't really think thats need. Of course thats my opion im never really in a rush to post anything anyways(well some times i am).
You're beginning to scare me…
if a quick post box is what i'm thinking ... wouldn't that tend to encourage worthless, mr aran-esque posts? i mean, you can see the previous posts on the post a reply page ...

But a quick-post box doesn't even leave the main screen, therefore you can also see the previous posts.

I don't think it would encourage spam. I go to two other forums frequently, both of which have quick-post functions. If someone wants to post, they will. This just saves some time.

I think that it would drastically reduce posting time, but will encourage more posting, which could result in more spam.  All in all, this is a bad idea.
@Toozin: Are you always like that?

Yes, yes he is.  And we love 'im.

And more importantly, he's an admin, so this equation applies:

You bitch at him for no reason == you get banned. :P

I have a small complaint about that.  Many times I go to edit a post to add more stuff and it is annoying that the previous posts aren't there on that page.

Wait, a quick post box is supposed to save time, right? But how much time does it actually save? It's not that hard to just click "Reply." It takes like, a second with dsl/cable, and even with dial-up, the wait isn't THAT long.
And yeah, I think it'd encourage less capitalization, poor grammar, and more spam. imo, if a user doesn't want to take the time to make a "real" post, then they shouldn't post at all.

yeah, i guess it wasn't applied to the edit post page. no clue when that mod was installed (thought it was by toozin & co., but seems weird if it was ...) so sorry about that. it annoys me as well.
