Hello guys,

First of all... nice efforts on the Metroid series! Some of you are truly great at these games. Well done!

Secondly, I like the choice you guys made with phpBB. For obvious reasons... :P

OK, my question... I'm going through Zero Mission now... and I restart on a regular basis, I wanna learn the game through and through. I've never played through it entirely though. But, up until a point I know my way around quite well...

Anyhow, I'm stuck... you see, I'm currently playing a low percent game (no long beam, 99 energy, 5 missiles and some other details) and I'm stuck at this ... bug. It's a huge fly like creature. In the Ridley area. Right after defeating some hanging worm like thing.

I think you know which bug I mean. Anyhow, with my 5 missiles and no charge beam... I'm kinda stumped. Any hints/tips? Should I go back and fetch the Charge Beam (since it's still hovering in mid-air... killed the worm, didn't pick up the Charge Beam)?

Or are there are ways of hurting this fly? Am I missing something?

直死の魔眼使い
In case you want a game hard as hell, keep it up as it is now. In case you want to increase your probability of survival to 35% more or less, fetch at the very least the Long Beam.
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
You could watch this section of TFergusson's hard 15% run, where he beats the hornet with 2 missiles.  He has a pretty good strategy, but I can't really describe it.  I highly suggest you watch it.

Wouldn't it be eaiser just to completely skip the hornet and get one of the other Super Missle packs? Am I missing something here?

Well, if you can point me out to one I CAN get. I'm pretty capable with the Infinite Bomb Jump, aka Bomb Ladder. Both vertically and horizontally. Wall Jumping I'm trying to learn too. Still have to get a real feel for it though.

Anyhow, if there's a Super Missile I can get to without doing this Hornet, I'm more than happy... got one? I don't know any specific locations on any.

You know in Ridely, with the one energy tank from the old game with the fake floor? You can jump across that pretty easily, and there's a Super Missle in the room past it. BTW, you know how to get to Ridely himself without Super Missles, right? You can get in through the place you usually get out of.

Thanks for pointing that out to me.

But, to get to that room in Zero, you need a Super Missile... because it's AFTER the Green Door right by the First Save in Ridley.

Anyhow, I did it the Fergusson-way... it was an annoying but fun fight (the one with the Hornet). Now I'm at 00:48:58 at a Save right before Ridley himself. 99 Energy, 5 Missiles, 2 Supes. I don't stand a snowball's chance in Hell, but, I'm gonna give it the best I got.

By the way, now that I mention Fergusson... is the Screw Attack essential, because he had it by then. And I missed it. And I have the Wave Beam which he did NOT. There is a room right past the Wave Beam itself you have to get through. And without Wave I am finding that a difficult room. Pointers?

Ah, but as I said, you can make it to Ridely himself without Super Missles(although I'd admit I didn't describe that trick well), and there's no green doors between that one and Ridely. I've gotten it myself. See, you know that dead end room to the right of the elevator, where you come back later? You can go into the area that way too. You need to shoot or Missle a block (can't remember which) in the ceiling 2 or 3 squares right of the left wall, then freeze a pipe enemy to climb up there.

I don't remember what room that is... but the Screw Attack isn't required. All the places where you're blocked off by Screw Blocks (on the main path, at least), there's another way around. Even in Chozodia, in that room just after you get your suit back, with that wall of screw blocks, the floor cleverly conceals a missle block and morph ball passage around it.

As near as I know, he picked it up solely to make certain sections easier. He was going for a 15% game (the maximum you can have to get the best ending), which means he could allow himself a few extra pickups over the bare minimum required to complete the game. He chose an energy tank, three super missile tanks, the screw attack and possibly high-jump boots (I can't remember if he grabbed them or not).

You say you have the wave beam, then you say you don't. Do you, or don't you? If you skip the wave beam, you never have to go near there.
You don't need the Wave Beam.  Go to the upper-right corner of Norfair (where you emerge back into the bubble shaft after getting the Ice Beam) and fire a Missile into the upper-right block (careful of the crumbling blocks; it helps to freeze the Ripper and use it as a platform).  Go through there and use some fancy bomb/wall jumping to move to the right.  You'll drop all the way down to the elevator to Ridley's Lair.  This also negates the need for the Speed Booster.  How convenient.

Sorry, it came out ... confusing. Sorry bout that.

Code:
D --------- D ----> ?
    |
    |
    |
W-D-|

D = Door
W = Wave Beam

? = the room I am having trouble with if I do NOT pick up the Wave Beam. It is a room with some shootable blocks (2 layers on top of each other). Beyond those shootable blocks is a small wall that can only be destroyed by Speed Boosting through it. But to get up to speed those shootable blocks before it need to be gone. And I am having trouble accomplishing that without the Wave Beam.

Will have to look into that at a later time. When I am at that point again... :-)
Ah, that room. You could try aiming diagonally down and firing like crazy as you run, that could work. You can also skip that room entirely by going back the way you came.

But then I would have trouble with one of those burrowing worms who is block my path to build up the Speed Boost to gain access to Ridley.
You know, in that vertical "shaft" in the east of Norfair. That shaft that has multiple Speed Boost drop floors and also has the High Jump in one of the rooms linked to it.

/me wishes rooms had names, like in MP.

Anyhow, you need to drop one level down eventually, to get to Ridley... and you need Speed Boost for that. But a burrowing worm is block the path to build up speed and you can only kill it from the other side (the side of the Wave Beam). You know, the worm you need to lure and then drop some morph ball bombs under his belly.
You obviously don't know about the secret shaft that runs alongside that one. Think back to where you get the ice beam. After getting it, you end up at the very top of the shaft, where you'd normally drop back down through pit blocks right? There is a missle block at the very top of the right hand wall here. Shoot it, and go through it to find another shaft that runs down next to the one you'd normally take down to Ridley, allowing you to get to Ridley without having the speed booster at all.

Oeeeeh... I'm definately gonna have to remember that one!

Shoot... I know why you couldn't get my super missle tank... I was talking about the wrong one! Mine is on the other side of the top of the vertical shaft that's just before the save point that's just before Ridely's room! (You'll have to make a tight jump over the missle tank there, but it can be done.)
