I don't know if someone already found this, but I could't find it in the forum, so i'll post it. You can get the Missile Expansion in the Training Chamber without the Spider Ball. All you have to do is space jump onto the slope of the Spider Ball track on the left side of the big statue (the track on the left side when you enter the room). From there you can space jump onto the platform and activate the bomb slot to move the statue. You'll need Gravity Boost to do this trick.

Not really early if you go down there at the best time, but skipping the spider ball track parts is a nifty speed trick there. ^^

You might want to post this in the speed tricks topic, so it's not overlooked.

I posted that on the boards a while ago. I was really dissapointed that the power bomb door can't be opened without the spider ball...

Why can't it? You can jump over to the door without it.  Just use the bomb slot, then when the statue moves, you can jump on 2 little pegs in the outer corner, then to the door.
