the weakest thing about the new console reveal was the lack of new games to showcase the use of the new controller.

they have another E3 to show them off but it isn't wise to waste chances.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
It's really dumb to be expecting a bunch of games to be shown off for a console that is at least a year away from release. You're gonna get tech demos and most launch titles will be tech demos because no one really knows what to do with the thing yet. Nothing was wasted.

Dear NGP Pitch Guy,

Get a smaller jacket next time, you look like a homeless man.

Oh fuck's sake, Golden Abyss guys you're going on stage in front of a bunch of people, fucking dress yourselves properly i.e. find shirts you did not sleep in. Goddamn.

Also Uncharted 3 and a new PSP I guess.

Nintendo: Blah Blah new system with a weird controller that totally has tons of third party support this time guys we swear. Also the 3DS is still totally great you guys look at these two or three games we're making for it. Skyward Sword is out this year by the way and also new Kirby but whatever.

So basically Who Cares?: The Convention.

New uncharted mite b cool, I still haven't played the first two yet though. But... uncharted 3 was announced, like, a looong time ago, and had a trailer at least two months ago. Seems silly to announce it again at E3 but whatever. I guess I'll look up whatever new info was released about the new PSP, I'm a bit interested in that one.

and yeah new nintendo console seems quite lackluster. Oh well, guess I'm skipping both the handheld and console for nintendo this gen.
I got to say, I expected more during this conference, so I am pretty disappointed from what I saw with the exception of a few games. Batman: Arkham City looks better than I imagined, even better than the first game, and I hope to be able to play it when I can.

They were showing some actual gameplay this time, not really announcing anything, and they had to show something because had literally nothing else but the PSP stuff which doesn't sound like anything special to me aside from Little Big Planet being basically perfect for it. And admittedly Uncharted looked very pretty as usual even if the gameplay looks like the same dull third person shooting that every other game ever uses and Drake still looks hideous.

Maybe there was more to it but I honestly was very much distracted by the seemingly endless stream of men who looked like they just stumbled out of a bar or something. It was weird.

I am just interested to know what you think. Assuming devs have better hardware the next-gen around, what games do you expect to see? Do you expect to see new concepts or just all the same stuff with better visuals and put overs like that.
The latter.  I expect to see nothing new, and everything just getting made shiny and more realistic.

Less realistic more brown/gray.

A new Quake, then?

Far Cry is a game that can only be done best on PC and it stands or fails with  AI-design and atmosphere. The original Far Cry is phenomenal in this department. Don't giving this much hope. But it would be nice to see it work properly.

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I don't mind games being ported.  Personally, I'd just get it on the original platform, but I can understand that many people don't have the luxury of owning every system, and therefore they sometimes have to settle for an 'inferior' version.  Either that, or don't play it at all.  I think that saying a game is 'best on a PC' only works to a degree.  Things like RTS games, and FPSes are (IMO) much better suited to a PC, although you could always argue that you can use the peripherals on a console.  Outside of those game types, you could argue the opposite, in that things such as fighting games and platformers are 'best' on console, again due to the control method (you could always buy a controller for PC too...).  In short, I think it comes down to control method more than anything else, especially if you factor in the fact that those games designed for a PC are always at risk of the 'I can't run it' problem, which means that a lot of people aren't playing it 'as intended' anyway, so is it 'best'?

Control methods affect AI-decision. That will be the problem with Far Cry 3.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yes, but as I said above, there'd be nothing stopping them making a mouse and keyboard for the consoles, so control method would be irrelevant.

Native control methods affect how the game is designed before-hand. That is what I am saying.

Personally I could make it work properly, even on an xbox360. But I am not working for them.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I understand, but you could argue that with PC gaming becoming all but obsolete, developers could still target games at a keyboard / mouse control method, and distribute cheap peripherals with games.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
With modern controllers hovering around £25-£30 (or equivalent), paying £10 for a cheap keyboard and mouse doesn't seem half as bad.

Yeah, potentially I have nothing against consoles. I love them more than pc because they provide equal experience for all of us and it makes up better for competitive gaming aswell. Also you can get more game-power per hardware out of them compared to the pc because they are fixed hardware and mainly designed to run games (personal aesthetical aspect).

The point is not the hardware itself so much but what game developers decide to do with it. The current trend is that console-shooters do not live up to the quality how they would be designed for a pc. In game-development I see my biggest strength in game-mechanics and controls. There are xbox360-controller-mechanics and implementations which allow to design console-shooters on a "higher" level by default. But unfortunately I don't see anyone else spend much thought in this area.

But I am not surprised since it is already visible by many old games that controls were not treated with much care. For example many grid-based action-games could be played elegantly with a stair-climbing feature (diagonal-movement) but all of them are missing it.

@console-keyboard:
It would be something new to see certain console-games mainly designed to be played with a keyboard+mouse. I still think if someone decides to make a rts ala Starcraft he just would decide to make it for pc. If not for pc he would think how to make it work on a controller since that is the native device of our consoles. So I personally don't mind if there would be console-games labeled at the back "k+mouse highly recommend" but we won't see it happening since there is always a need for pc.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I recall that Quake 3 was ported to the Dreamcast, and while it was playable with the controller, it fully supported a keyboard and mouse, and gave the impression that that was what it was aimed at.  Regardless, it's still a rarity.
That is what I liked about Carmack and his company. It is about tech-passion and the game. "It is done when it is done." is also a sign for that. Their games however are too basic and unreal tournament classic is likely better than quakes. Doom however is a well crafted game.

Let's see Far Cry 3 does not boil down to a script-game ala uncharted.

I'm trying to remember the last game I played that wasn't as linear as a movie.

I'm just glad that everyone at E3 is focusing on the next new gimmick instead of new technologies that actually make games fun. [/sarcasm]

Don't play games that aren't as linear as a movie then. theres tons, literally new ones every day. Look into Puzzle or indie or even flash games, theres a lot out there.

the PSP2 seems to have some pretty awesome technology. Touch screen might be considered gimmicky, but hell, at least (unlike nintendo) they're adding some good hardware to their gimmicks.

The rear touch pad on the psp baffles me. I saw some things that used it during the press conference but it still seemed awkward at best and pointless at worst.

As example, the addition of touch could make more complex rpgs better playable(if someone wants to play them handheld). In a big menu-set you can quicker navigate and choose desired options/equipment...However the following is likely how many will use it. Just watch this redundant nonsense yourself:
