Anywhere, everywhere
I think she says it about 7-8 times in the opening cutscene, and maybe 2 times in the whole rest of the game.

That intro, man, that intro...

She says baby fourteen times throughout the game.  Don't ask.

Also, Japanese Samus is pretty green too.  She's also much much higher and ear piercing.
The intro of the game is great.

14 times... have you dreamed about "the baby" yet?

Who knew that making comments (all varieties) on Metroid games would prove to be (almost) as entertaining as playing.

Holy shit Nightmare.

Holy shit Nightmare again.

Holy shit Queen Metroid!

Lol Rogue AI

Who thought ending the main game with a Pixel Hunt For The Cutscene While Getting The Shit Kicked Out Of You segment was a good idea? Nobody liked the Cutscene Pixel Hunts normally, even less people would like to do that while in "combat".

I like how this game actually did the whole "Let the player enjoy all these sweet ass toys we've given them" thing right. Just gave you the Screw Attack and Space Jump, pointed you where you need to go and pretty much turned you loose on the world. Much better than the "Go get these whatsits now" method of the Primes, even if it doesn't quite pad the game out as well as Retro would have liked.

I really like having the proper Screw Attack in a 3d game, just floating around all over like some crazy death balloon or something. It's nice.

What would have been nice was to have been told that I got the Power Bombs before the final round of the Queen fight. I was slightly spoiled to that fact prior to playing, so it wasn't quite as frustrating as it was for most of you, but some sort of indication still would have been nice.

I officially can't dislike this game now. As many issues as it has, I've had too much fun toying with the movement upgrades and dealing with Nightmare and a Queen 'Troid in 3d. Give the game a proper controller, put the plot in the hands of someone who isn't perpetually drunk, and this game could be something amazing. It is a little disappointing when you consider what it could have been, but what it is isn't really so bad really.

Just gotta wrap up this epilogue or whatever to get 100% and then I can try and figure out what this all was!
Try not to think about it too much more. When I first saw the main ending, I was in the 'like' camp, but the more I thought about it, the more I grew to just see it as waste of £38.
although I got £20 back :P

Anyone who knows about the first Queen fight in ROS remembers the bomb trick, and for me once I realized where the battle was going to end and that normal bombs didn't work, I tried the next best thing. They teach you how to use them in the beginning for a reason, and when you're playing and expect the Queen is the final boss it makes sense to me to try out the last item that hasn't been unlocked yet.

Still, I get how most players, especially ones who have never heard of or played ROS before, would have no idea about any of what I just said and would never think to try PBs for a long time. It does take a little more thinking on the player's part than pretty much anything else in the game up to that point, so I consider myself lucky to have realized it after my first death at that stage.

Oh, and if you're going for 100%, be prepared for one final bit of fun if you've somehow missed us talking about the endgame up to this point. (Which I highly doubt.)

And yay! Another person who overall likes the game!
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I agree with you about those that may have played RoS, but the fact remains that even if you KNEW that it had been used in RoS, and knew HOW to use a Power Bomb (Should do, as it's shown to you), you still spend the entire game waiting for any and all abilities to be 'allowed'.  This mean that even you thought about Power Bombs, there's no reason for people to think of using them, as they haven't been 'allowed' yet.
Like I said, I was lucky to think of trying them at that point, given that there's no indication whatsoever that you'd be able to or not. Based on most of the responses I've seen to the Queen fight both here and elsewhere, I am one of the few who did think to try using them that early after getting to the final part of the battle. Would've been nice, definitely, but I kinda liked that they did it this way because it goes back to the older games where you try every weapon in your arsenal to find what works against a particular enemy or boss.

I think that's part of why I still get surprised by this. Normally, if you try something and it doesn't work, whether in Metroid or any game for that matter, wouldn't you go down the list of options you have until you find one that does, no matter how unlikely? Of course, that goes into the idea that every enemy or boss can be defeated in some way, which isn't necessarily true in all cases.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
You would most certainly go through your options, but again most people did not have Power Bombs as an option because they hadn't been 'allowed' to use them yet.  Not even on the radar. Not talking
I actually thought to use Power Bombs on my third or fourth attempt and so I tried them... And apparently did something wrong, and thought they didn't work yet. :\
figured it after one death aswell. Since I knew bombs we're the viable thing for MQ, and then it just happened that bombs didn't work, went WTF and then figured there's only one choice, really.
I tried to use normal bombs and wondered why I wasn't doing any damage. 3rd or fourth try I thought of Power Bombs, but I was too slow about charging it and died. >_>
I don't know what RoS is... it took me a few attempts to PB the queen. I was frustrated on the 1st play through at how quickly I died and/or how little time there is to recharge energy so before I even knew what happened, I was gone. Believe it or not, I sneezed on my 2nd try (at exactly the wrong time) and died again. Due to options (or lack of), PBs seemed to be the next thing to try. As with Miles, I died on the first PB attempt and thought, man, how hard can this be?

Metroid II: Return of Samus

EDIT: There was a famous strategy in the game to defeat the Metroid Queen requiring Samus to shoot the queen's mouth with a missile when it lunged at her and was open. Then you enter Morph Ball and lay bombs in the Queen's stomach. This was before power bombs was invented.

as far as the core gameplay goes, it works pretty good and with a more standard controller, it would rival the good old 2D Metroids.
i actually want Metroid 2 to be remade this way on 3DS since Other M's biggest flaw would disappear instantly (there's practically no story in M2) and the controls would be fixed by default since the 3DS has the analog nub to replace the dpad. add in 3D and good visuals and it should be a treat to have that remake.
Mario -- thanks for the info.

Yeah, rather than the 100+ missiles you need to fire at her mouth, you need all of 4 or so bombs to take her out I believe. (Done over multiple journeys into the stomach, not all at once.)

i died a couple times before using the PB and, even in a few PB attempts, i died because i didn't charge fast enough.

That actually happened to me too. Apparently I held the button too soon and by the time I realized this I was only able to half charge before dying. It was a weird sequence.

The difference here though is that in the older games you are typically aware of what your options are. That isn't really the case here, you are told that Power Bombs exist one time and only use them that one time. This one time occurred ~six hours ago in game time, and likely longer in real time, it's entirely possible to forget you even have the option. Even if you didn't, for all other upgrades you are explicitly told you have and you use them right around the point you got them, Power Bombs have never worked at any point after the tutorial. Repeatedly killing the player until they remember that one thing they've used just once ever exists and try to use it at a very specific time is pretty poor design. All it would have taken was a little pop up in the corner to say, "Power Bombs authorized", not even the typical switch over to the status screen to point it out that they used for every other upgrade. Give the player something to work with.

But weird decisions have sort of been the hallmark of recent Metroid games, so I can't really say I was surprised by that.
Oh yeah, holding the button when entering the queens mouth won't cause you to charge. You have to press the button when inside the queen.

Phoenix
I died twice, then midway through the third attempt I thought of PBs but died before I could charge it, then on the fourth attempt got it.

Honestly, I don't think it's that bad, whether you've played RoS or not. You're stuck in morph ball mode, and you have all of two attacks: Bombs and Power Bombs. Bombs don't work, so there's only one other option. It wouldn't make sense to have a thing pop up saying they're authorized, since there's no one to authorize them.
I think part of it for me as well was that I'm pretty sure I accidentally started charging a PB a few times when playing the game normally, so I didn't forget about them. Well, that and the fact that Adam brings them up specifically early on when talking to Samus because of how deadly they are supposed to be.

But yeah, I never said it was the best decision they could have made regarding this. All I've been trying to say is that I felt there was enough of a hint for me to figure it out pretty quickly, which would make me assume others would catch on as well. Either way, Hitaka basically just said what went through my mind during that battle. There's only so much you can do when you're morphed.
I agree with Hitaka. You have 2 choices.

And she wasn't planning to use them, so it was more of a "must use". If you die otherwise, you don't wait until a dead officer approves, like in previous parts of the game. :D

It'd make more sense than just not telling you at all. There's really no reason not to tell the player, the player shouldn't have to replay shit just because you don't feel like telling them that they're allowed to win. Not with the way the game has worked up until that point.

It's not a huge thing, people will figure it out at some point, but it's just shitty design to put player in a forced damage situation and give no indication that they have the tools to get out of it. If they didn't give you a checkpoint right there it'd be grounds to just toss the game right there, honestly. They don't even remind you how to use Power Bombs until the post game return to the Bottle ship. Just pop that shit up when Samus lands in the Queen's stomach so at least the player isn't killed a couple times needlessly. Or just make Bombs work as a slow and slightly stupid method and make the Power Bombs a nice bonus.
