Ever since I can remember, I've never had a problem with the space jump feature in any of the Metroid titles. I jump - I spin - I jump again and again and spin again and again. It's not that difficult. But while playing Metroid Fusion (my first time ever, Gameboy Player using HORI pad) it seems that the game doesn't like to respond to my button presses to execute the space jump. I've had several occurrences while space jumping I press the A button as usual but Samus does not respond and simply falls.

Right now I'm facing off against Nightmare and while having the usual routine of dieing a few times during the first couple battles I eventually learned the pattern of this beast and now know what to do. But while dodging him in the air using the Space Jump, waiting for him to go back to his slow movement towards the power grip ladder, Samus seems to want to fall for no particular reason and of course it happens just as Nightmare is right next to me. He hits me for an inexcusable amount of damage and I fall to the ground and try to dodge his random movement while waiting to get back on the ladder to shoot him in the face once again. It sucks.

Anybody have any tips for an increasingly frustrated gamer? I'm about to throw my Gamecube across the living room because I'm so freaking pissed right now. Normally I don't get this way at games, but Fusion is one of those exceptions. Why did they create the usual random enemies that lurk the space station so damn powerful. I have 11 energy tanks and from one save station to the next, I get hit like five times and am near death!!!! WTF is up with that?? I find it to be quite annoying, something that I never had a problem with in any other Metroid title. Why Fusion?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

As far as the normal enemies are conerned, it's like that for a few reasons. One, her Fusion suit is not as powerful defensively as her old Power Suit. Two, the game is just harder than the other Metroid games (though maybe not the original). Just tread a little lighter; you've got a lot of firepower at your disposal at that point in the game, so use it before you get into contact range with them.

In regards to the Space Jump... I'm not sure. I know that the timing isn't very demanding, however you must start the next Space Jump after the apex of her jump, at the point she starts coming down, and no sooner. Remember that even if she starts to fall you can still keep Space Jumping, so try it again quickly before you fall any farther to keep aloft.

Nightmare... well, he's hard. IMO, he's probably the hardest boss in the Metroid series. There are some things to know to make your life a lot easier, however. At the start of the fight, I suggest just staying off the ladder. Just jump and use missiles to knock off his "mask" and put him into the second phase. At that point, you can use the ladder to get between the horizontal laser blasts, and keep firing away with missiles. Now, at some point he's going to use his gravity disruptor, which will render your missiles useless; at that point start using charged beam shots. When it comes to the point that he begins trying to actually charge into you, don't panic. You can lure him into a pattern at this point, where he will not hit you, or at least hit you very little. He's not on a "set pattern"; that is, he reacts similarly to how a Core-X chases you, just reacting to your current position. Try to lure him into a counter-clockwise pattern. When he charges you, jump over him, then wait in the lower-right hand corner and Space Jump over him when he comes again. Then, use your Space Jump to stay near the upper part; he'll swing in from the right, so pull off a charge shot as he passes while dropping back down to the ground. Then, just keep him in that counter-clockwise circle. If he stops chasing, get back on the ladder and PUMP him full of shots. If the gravity is normal unload missiles into him as fast as you possibly can, otherwise keep using charged shots. He'll go down eventually.

Good luck, and don't give up!

i can think of one specific thing you should watch for when you see this behavior. does samus snap out of the spin jump (stop spinning), then fall? if so, you need to be sure to only press left or right while you are jumping in metroid fusion, not up or down, since nintendo unwisely decided to snap you out of your jump if you press up while spinning. the hori is a very sensitive controller that will actually record an "up" press even if you only rock the controller to a forty-five degree up/right or up/left position, so you should try going to a safe place and watching your left hand while you space jump to make sure none of that is going on.

i also might suggest hammering the button instead of giving it a single press for each jump to further familiarize yourself with the timing of space jump availability. as far as i know, it was heavily tweaked for fusion following super metroid.

also, if you didn't know, you can execute a spin jump in midair in both metroid fusion and metroid zero mission by pressing jump in the middle of a plain jump. from there you can begin space jumping again without ever touching the ground. i agree with this implementation, as it allows faster movement through the game.

good luck. we will be happy to answer any further questions you might have.

I usually stand beneath him and fire upwards to destroy his gravity manipulator. Then hang off the ladder and empty missiles into his face.
