ok people im not sure if im the only one but i am having trouble beating kraid in metroid....maybe i just suck or i dont know the trick to beating him.  Cause i know from experience in NES side scrollers (mostly megaman) Bosses usually have tricks to them so help me :P
Thread title:
Do you have the ice beam?  If so, freeze the projectiles he shoots, then ice him with missiles and ice shots.  Hope that helps.
Don't feel bad.  The original Metroid is just plain hard.  It's too simple of a design to find short cuts and secrets.  Does that make sense?
You're obviously better at it than me. I still havn't found Kraid yet.
well i have ice beam and i have been freezing his shots but he fucking hits me down into the lava and i have a hard time jumping out and when i finally do he hits me once and die cause he does like 523843 damage lol but thanx anyways :P ad another question can someone please explain to me how to infinite bomb jump i can do it but i have trouble doing it cause i hit A as fast as i can :P

Did you kill Ridely first? Ridley and his area are quite a bit easier than Kraid and his. More E-Tanks and Missles WILL help.

There's your problem right there.  It's a matter of timing, not speed.  Here's how:

Lay a bomb.
Just before it explodes, lay another bomb.
Lay a third bomb at the peak of your jump.
You'll drop and, if timed correctly, you should immediately get bombed back up to the one you just laid.
Lay another one AS SOON as you hit it, because it will immediately bomb you up again.
Lay another bomb at the peak of your jump.
Repeat as needed.

Yeah, going straight to Kriads after brinstar is a big mistake. It's important to visit Norfair first. Get the High jump boots and extra e-tanks. Then go back to brinstar and pick up the second suit. It makes a huge difference.

I really wish Metroid had a save feture, a la Zelda. I hate writing down those insanely long passwords. I think it would have been a little easier that way.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely

The Famicom Disk System version had exactly that.
Metroid Prime's version has a save feature, too. Now all it needs is to give you full health instead of 30 at the beginning.
That would definately help, but I would prefer they give you these features as options.  I would like to be able to play the ultimate classic version.
thanks for ur help guys <3
I MIGHT be able to get somewhere in Metroid I if I had this incredible inventio called a MAP!!!

Every room looks identical so I never have a clue WHERE on earth I am!

I even got lost in the Megaman Vs Samus game!!
I just ran randomly willy-nilly in that game.  I got there just fine.

Anyway, why would you want a map in the original?  That detracts from the fun!  Anyway, if you've played ZM, a lot of the stuff is in the same place (in fact, that's how I knew how to get to Kraid.  And where the Varia suit was).

I beat Kraid like this (before Ridley):

First, you need the Varia Suit and about four energy tanks. You will also have to pick up the energy tank in his chamber during the fight.

When you enter the room, just roll into a ball, roll into him and start bombing him like crazy. If done correctly, he'll be damaged quite a bit. When you have low energy left, get the energy tank. Then just repeat.

Might not be the best way, but hey, works for me.

You do have a map. It's called "Zero Mission."

Seriously, the layout of the two games corrolate very, very much. Keeping in mind the layout of ZM areas, I was able to navigate M1 with relative ease. Granted it does get a little cofusing when a bunch of areas look exactly the same, but if you keep track of where you would be on the ZM mini-map it makes things heckuva easier.
It's amazing how much more confident I am about tackling 1 now that I know the map in ZM pretty well. Finally, I may stand a chance of not getting lost in Kraids lair.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
I go to Kraid's first now..seems faster.
Well...considering the farthest I've gotten in Zero Mission at the stores is the Charge Beam, I suck at Metroid (I just borrowed Fusion from a friend and hooked it up to my Prime copy). I wish you'd have more life, and your gun was able to hit those stinkin Zoomers! Oh well...can't have everything.
I found an easier way to kill Kraid in the origional Metroid.

Requirements:Varia Suit, 3 energy tanks, Wave Beam.

Just keep jumping out of the Acid on the right side of the platform and fire the Wave Beam. He will be gone soon.

I think that it's ridiculous that, even though the only way to save is by dying, they went and put an insane penalty for dying like that, draining almost all of your energy.  It just doesn't make sense.  Add that to the fact that there are some traps that you can't get out of, like certain columns in lower Norfair which you can fall between but never get out of, and there's lava at the bottom.  Ridiculous.  I haven't given up yet, but I'm in Kraid's Lair at 30 health, of course, the Varia and three ETanks.  Those stupid creatures that pop out of the acid at you and rise to your height before shooting across the screen at you take off 10 energy or something, so I can't get anywhere very easily.  Stupid 30 energy...

Have you beaten Ridely yet? Ridely's Lair is actually eaiser than Kraid's.
Cook of the Sea
No.  I think I'm going to do that.  Also, I remember getting the Varia, but the suit doesn't look noticeably different.  I know that the shape doesn't change and it's just a palette swap, but I really can't tell whether I have it or not.  Is it supposed to cancel out acid or just slow down the damage?  Also, those purple dudes in Norfair never seem to shoot anything.  I see them pucker up their mouths like they are, but nothing ever comes out.  Is my file glitched?

Varia just slows damage. There's no acid protection properties. In fact, there's no acid, it seems more like the code just damages you whenever you're on the bottom of the room, no matter what tile there is.
