In Metroid Prime 1 the levels were pretty easy to memorize up until the phazon mines, then I had to use the map quite a lot to find my way around for a while. But after several playthroughs, I finally know where to go and where everything is without using the map. The level design makes sense in MP1, its like a real place...kind of in a space pirate crazy way...  MP2 was pretty good about making sense in the beginning, but to hell if it was just a huge twisting mess in the later areas, but not that bad compared to MP3.

SkyTown. Who the hell designed this place? not even the map is very helpful with rooms overlapping in side and topdown views, its very hard to get a fix on your location using the map, and which door to go though to put you on the right zipline road to the next floating building. I havn't played MP3 since I first beat it at launch time. I decided to go again and saw that I had a half finished hypermode run going. I apparently beat the game and started my file over on hyper, then gave up at one point.  Well, now I am trying to finish it, but I am stuck at the Dark Samus fight at the end of the game. The space pirate planet is the worst though for twisted levels. Combined that with the transit system which doesn't show the train connections on the map, I literally have no idea where to go to get from point A to point B besides wandering around and hoping I end up at the right place. The only saving grace is the Gunship that I frequently use to pseudo warp from one point to another.

And another thing that I was wondering since I found that first ship missile expansion. What good are they for?
Are there more places to use bombing runs other than the required rooms to clear debris. And how do you refill/check how much ship missile ammo is left?

/End pointless ramble.
Thread title:
I felt the same way about Skytown, especially with the dead-end path in one part of it. That thing manages to piss me off every single time because you cannot tell it is one-way on the map, and you end up going really far out of your way only to have to turn around. It's ridiculous really.

Ship missiles can be summoned to certain outdoor areas via use of the command visor and they seem to do quite enormous damage. I called them down on some Warp Hounds once and it killed the bunch of them in one blast.  I believe you can check your ship missile stock somewhere in the equipment/log book heirarchy. I think there's an inventory screen, try there. I am not aware of any complete list of areas where they're usable. Would be nice if someone were to compile such a list and maybe make a Ship Missiles FAQ on GameFAQs or something.

A faster way though is just to see if Ship Missile drops are appearing from enemies. They don't seem to ever appear unless you need them.  Also, if you call for the missiles and the ship won't fire, it's obviously out ;)
sounds like a good thing for me to do. If I can ever beat Dark Samus on my HyperMode run, I still need to play through this file one more time on verteran to get the rest of the bonus credits and I missed a few one time scans from the olympus. I'll check every room to see if it has a command icon in it. and write it down.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The command visor also shows your ship missile count, IIRC.

Watch the "possibly groundbreaking DS fight", it's a foolproof strat for beating Dark Samus with only one energy tank. If you have more (I'm assuming 14), then applying the strat would make the fight a total breeze.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
As for convoluted level design, I HATED the Chozo Observatory.  I spent about a half hour just trying to find the right exit I wanted to get out of the stupid area.  Then I find I went the wrong way after that and ended up BACK IN THE OBSERVATORY!  The map didn't help one bit -- it even added to the confusion, because the room design was very symmetrical.

something i noticed is that the map sometimes looks like it is inverted and makes you lose track of what you're looking at.

that never happened with teh other 2 games.  maybe it's the colors...
That map-inversion illusion thing happened in all three games for me, although it was very rare. It didn't bother me too much, it usually just took a few seconds to get adjusted.

I have a feeling it's because the maps are orthographic, as opposed to being in perspective.
Yes, it's an optical illusion created by the lack of depth perspective, and if you concentrate hard enough, you can actually force it to happen sometimes. When I'm bored I'll stare at the map for a while and try to flip it like this ;)  The best way to get your brain to flip it back seems to be to zoom out as far as you can, so that the whole area becomes recognizable. Works for me, anyway :)

I was beginning to wonder if anybody would ever mention this, btw :)
Ready to internet!
that's happened rather often with me (the map thing). i just look, wondering where to go and i think "huh? shouldn't that be... huh?!" and thenmy brain goes into emergency shutdown until i zoom out and in and move the map around.
Anywhere, everywhere
Getting lost in a metroid game? Oh heaven forbid...

The map in mp3 may have been a little harder to move around, but it was in no way more confusing than the other 2.
Ready to internet!
i can easily navigate my way through most of MP1. MP2 i can't really comment too much on as it bored me to freaking death. and i really need to finish MP3. i'm getting the last energy cells and going to the valhalla, so i think i'm near the end.

There's getting lost because you're new to something, and there's getting lost even when you've already been through it five times. I get turned around like crazy in the Chozo Observatory general area in Prime 3. And the use of stuff like broken elevators and one-way passages screams lack of useful ideas to me. It would have been better to spread stuff out more than to make your path double back on itself repeatedly.

I completely agree. Corruption had easily the worst level design of the series, but mostly it was all in SkyTown. What a mess that place was.
Annoying

How could you get lost in Phazon Mines? It's basically a steep downword spyral! Chozo Ruins was the easiest place to get lost in, with it's many small corridors.

That's what's it's all about.

I always thought it would be a better Zelda level.

/End comments.

It's true about Corruption's map design. It is way too easy to flip it up-side-down. In fact i never use any maps in the 3-D Metroids, i just look for a complete map online.

Actually skytown does give me that "been here before" feeling when I think of the City in the Sky dungeon in Z:TP. :p
Jagger ftw
why can't they all be like 2d metroid maps?
Ready to internet!
inter-connected and showing where items are?
Jagger ftw
imagine there is no doors.... he he
Ready to internet!
ooh. if by that you meant walk through an entryway, it does the "move samus to other side of screen" then continues, then i'm hip for it. if it were all one big connected room, well, i dunno what to say to that
Jagger ftw
now we should be thankful for our current map eh?
OH ****!!!!

Now that It's been mentioned I did get lost alot more in Prime 3 than in the other Primes. Especially Skytown. I particularly hated that maze near seeker missile. Every time I go into that area I try to figure out whether or not I'm lost. I also hated it becaus it was full of metroids (I have, for some reason been creeped out by them since my first encounter in Prime 1). I got more lost in NES Metroid (in which I never got very far withou NARPAS SWORD) and Metroid II. Mostly for because som many rooms were identical. At some times I thought the rooms looped to prevent you from getting to places early. The lack of a map didn't help either.
Anywhere, everywhere
Metroid II very rarely repeated rooms. In fact, there were very few doors in that game, period. People only get lost in that game because they have a low sense of direction or they load up a save without playing in a long time.
Jagger ftw
they need to have a zoom in (with in room), instead of over view of structure
