I have an idea for a cool hack

Project Name: Super Metroid Daedalus

Concept: A hack focused on Wall-jumping and a lot of water zones

Game Areas

1.- First of all, start with a Space Colony designed for Walljumping (escape time 5 Minutes)

2.- Artificial Zebes Areas > Total map

Nerea (Crateria) 10%
Aquaflorae (Brinstar) 20%
G.F.S. Atlantis II (Wrecked Ship) 30%
Sublaguna (Maridia) 15%
Hidrotherma (Norfair) 15%
Daedalus(Tourian) 10%

Skills needed for this hack: Walljumping, spend ammo wisely and patience (i think we don't need Mockball or speedball on this, for make it easier for average players)
Game Physics/Gravity: Same as the normal game (Redesign physics sucks.)

I'll try to draw some concept maps for the SM Daedalus.

What do you think of my idea.

Another reason I need to buy a gamepad. I keep sucking at those hacks that require an extensive amount of that because my keyboard can't make me wall jump!

Anyway: Redesign physics kind of blow. I mean, think about it. Where do you think the new ideas came from? Metroid Prime.
I'm starting to wonder if this idea is original [or else not really based on anything], or have a lot of ideas put from other games.
True "originality" is incredibly rare; most of the time it's just using old ideas in a different way. It's not really because people aren't creative, it's because creating something fundamentally new is quite difficult, and making it actually be a good idea is harder still.

I actually find walljumps to be easier on the keyboard myself... there's no problem with accidentally pressing up or down. Everything else is harder, though. I'd recommend a USB controller with 4 shoulder buttons, that way you can set run to R and still keep both diagonal aims.

I would be cautious with physics changes. Just about every physics change I've seen was for the worse. Redesign's physics were OK, but I prefer the original ones.

This hack should definitely be coordinating enemy use. You only get one stat definition per enemy. Also be careful with the vulnerability pointers, as many are extensively shared. Exact settings for beam damage and enemy stats should probably wait until the areas are built.

I'm sort of interested in doing some stuff for this hack. I could do the extra area if no one's already claimed it.

Dude. RTFT. This isn't a "post your conceptual hack" thread; it's a thread for a collaborative hack. Take an area if you like, but keep Daedalus seperate.

Here's the maps of Space Colony and Nerea for the SM Daedalus project.

An idea that i have of Aquaflorae (Brinstar) is make it a "Items Galore" area, what do you think of that?
Your area setup seems quite similar to the original SM Wink

Also, Ridley's room probably won't want to play nice with your Ceres alterations. Room placement alterations tend to cause that room to have graphical errors - namely the green text will disappear. You'd have to experiment to see if you can get it to work.

The landing site is similar, but larger (for easy hacking).

For reach the upper left area they'll be floating platforms.

well, can somebody gimme a hand on the Ceres colony?
I meant more like the entrances to the Wrecked Ship and Brinstar are in the same places.

Your opening shaft is way too large to be up on edits (unless you are able to play around successfully with the Special Level Editor), but overall, everything might be nice, maybe except for Ridley's room.

Unless you want to claim ceres, and use your idea for that, then post your ideas somewhere else please.

Uh, isn't the Screenshot/Video Topic for that? Only you might need a bitmap picture of a room?

Seriously, read the damn thread.

I just got a nice idea.
So I will be takeing Kraids lair too.
I will have: spazer as a hidden item here. (note I will NOT do red brinstar)'

So I will use custome GFX in Kraids lair. The tiles are part of the red brinstar tile set. So who ever makes the red brinstar can't user the kraids lair GFX. So you know! :3

Lol theres always one. he is pardoned.
He could contribute here but im not too sure about wall jumping in ceres, people who cant wall jump wouldnt be able to play the hack. I would have taken Ceres but my ideas for it are hard too, so you know, I didnt want to block off the rest of the game.
By the way, I'd appreciate if I could have space jump, or swap whoever has it for one of my items (Plasma or Screw attack) because if the player has space jump when they enter Lower Norfair it kinda kills my area, because its like uber skills based.

PS: The contributors IRC channel for this hack is #hack on irc.metroid2002.com easier to converse plans.
Also, Im about to update the first post, what needs putting up?
Almost happy
I really don't think this hack should be created to be completable without walljumping, sure you shouldn't make any really hard walljumping necessary but not making it needed at all serioulsy reduces possibilities in hacks. Because either you would have to create a bunch of blocks that would make it more linear or it would be SB haven and every semi-knowledged SM player would sooner or later get stuck.

How about #hax instead, since it's actually the official one mentioned in #metroid as the channel for hacking

I don't like that style.
SM did not need wall jumping and it is fine if you ask me.
It is more fun if the hack don't need wall jumping. But people who can wall jump can skip shit! :3
I think that is how it works in the best way.
But thats all my opinion.

In other news, Fizzer decided to open a IRC channel on metroid 2002's server.
You can find it here.
Server: irc.metroid2002.com
Channel: #hack

Ideas and shit posted on IRC will be posted on forum in case some people don't go to IRC and because of time zones.
But it is always good to have real time chating.

As someone of relatively average skill I don't mind some required wall-jumping, within reason, as I think most regular SM players can wall jump to some extent.  I also don't mind a mockball or two as long as there's plenty of room to perform it.  Suitless varia can also be fun in small doses as long as it's not too easy to miss an e-tank (that you can't go back for) that will make it impossibly hard.  Same thing with underwater sans-gravity.  Make it a little bit hard to make that jump but not TOO hard.

What will kill a hack for me in no time is either (1) required IBJ (or HBJ), or (2) overly crazy grapple beam acrobatics.  I'm just not good at either and neither is fun enough, IMO, that I care to learn to be good.  I guess my point of this post is that a project like this should probably cater to the majority of the community here.  It shouldn't be so easy that no skills are required, but it also shouldn't only be accessible to those who can finish Impossible, Noobsmasher, etc.  I'd have no problem if some crazy-ass stuff was required to get 100%, but all the important items, beams, etc., and enough ammo to do the job, should be accessible without going completely insane.

Has anyone actually taken Space Jump? If not I'd like to request it for my area, or request that it isnt used, because i simply cant have the player have Space Jump before my area.
Go for it, mainly because having space jump will actually make my area harder, and I forsee people attempting my area before yours because of the tempting allure of the Gravity Suit

Updated first post.
Plenty of areas left to do. check out the map on the first post.

Small set back on Lower Norfair because my hard drive exploded, and im getting a new computer. Im having some great ideas though, many original ones too.
This should be quite interesting  8-)

I guess I can put my little bit into it

Ahem !

Let's go Guys !
You can do it !
I'm right behind you !

That's pretty much the best I can do »_»
Metroid Exp: Exploration - Great, Skills - Decent

This is the area Im taking. I am leaving far Eastern Crateria (Maridia Elevator area) to whoever does the WS

Also, since Spazer has been taken, I would like to have Spring Ball. That does not have to be in Maridia after all  laugh new.

Edit: Dont mind the symbols, I took this off one of my SM maps that I have.
