I can understand where the developers are coming from behind the Varia Suit activation. In previous games there are hot areas that deal you damage (and kill you in about 10 seconds), and you're very fearful of those sections because of it. If they activate the suit before you enter that area, there's certainly no health draining effect and certainly no fear over it. However, they could've come up with something a tad bit more rational or made it shorter. It wasn't a hard section by any means, but it could've been done better.

I'll agree it wasn't that bad overall, although my comment at the end of the last post may have suggested otherwise. Because of Concentration it's fairly easy to get across without dying even on hard difficulty. Nowhere near as bad as some of the Super Metroid hacks have done before with Varialess runs through heated areas. And even those aren't too bad once you know what to do. It's more the idea of a forced run through the fire that I think most people are upset with, especially because it's for a good portion of your first time in Sector 3.

But yeah, I can't think of anything right now that they could've done differently in order to get the point across regarding the reason Samus needs the Varia suit in the first place.

maybe they should ditch the generic fire/ice/grass area structure and make varia completely irrelevant...

They should place the Ice section first and have the reason for Varia be so that your suit doesn't freeze every 10 seconds leaving you open to attacks.

That would be pretty cool.

This need to explain why she's not going into each game as an infinitely jumping death god is absurd. Just make the game fun, no one really gives a shit about that. Granted trying to get story heavy might put a little more pressure on you to have things make sense, but no one is playing Metroid for it's deep involved story and they sure as hell aren't playing an action game to watch cutscenes. By trying to make her weakness at the start of each game make sense they're really only draw greater attention to the fact that it makes no sense, and when your chosen explanation is stupid it will only seem more stupid as the situation in game escalates and you can't do a thing about it because their emphasizing the wrong aspect of the game. (Hint: The game part needs to come first.)

I'm all for story being part of the game, but you have to know how to do it. Nintendo does not and it really shows. Do it right or just forget it entirely.

I just really miss the thrill of actually finding and acquiring the upgrade. The whole discovery/reward idea is just gone. I know that it's the same in terms of one minute you DON'T have the item and the next minute you DO have it, but knowing you had it all along and suddenly the game decided to automatically activate for you just isn't satisfying to me at all.

I think that Adam would have ordered his men to shoot her on sight if she didn't obey (though, with his personality your argument makes the most sense)

Now THAT would have been an amazing mechanic. Either follow Adam and limit yourself to the story, or flip him the bird and go on your own, now having to beware of the GF Soldiers as well. (which would probably act like SA-X since Samus wouldn't WANT to kill them, just not do things their way)

Random thought:
Is there any possibility that someone could "steal" Samus' suit? cause that'd be the one way they could bring back Item loss.

I could care less how samus loses her powers, it doesnt have to make sense or fit into the timeline as far as Im concerned. Hell, they could simply have her start off without the powers without bothering to explain why. Starting the game with no powers and ending the game with lots of powers is just how metroid is supposed to be, and thats enough explanation for me.

I have to wonder how many people honestly do care about the lack of items at the start of each game to the point where it actually ruins the game for them. I really can't see there being many.

I was referring to how the rest of the game works with her items, not the series in general. Isn't your example more or less what happens in Super?

I know we constantly joke about the way they start Samus with nothing, but back in the original games we didn't care. It's more fun to be able to go in and find the items and slowly grow in power, and it makes things much more satisfying when you can go back and devastate those enemies that gave you trouble in the beginning. So yeah, I'll agree with you here that the developers need to stop trying to explain things and just let us go and explore.

I'm just saying, from Samus' perspective, it seemed like the right thing to do. (And this is more for the comments on her being submissive than anything else.) Samus doesn't strike me as someone that would needlessly endanger her allies, which is probably what Adam was trying to avoid in the first place. (That, and destruction of Federation property) In any case, I'll agree it wasn't the best way to explain things from a story perspective. I can only work with what they gave us, after all. And as I've said before, the story is only decent in my mind. Certainly room to improve, and this is just one example of where they could've done so.

Usually people just want to know why the "staple" items can't be used.
Space Jump, Bombs, Missiles, etc.

The ~~more~~ better the explanation on why the powers were removed, the more freedom the devs have on introducing new powers.

Hell, I only JUST NOW realized Samus didn't "lose" her powers in Corruption, she just never used them.

Here's how I think they should do it for Dread or whatever happens after Fusion.

two-fold setup
- 1 Downloadable game that focuses on Samus exploring a long-forgotten Chozo planet with the plans to help her build a new Power Suit
- Retail game that starts her with the new power suit, but with limited powers at the start.

I was thinking more reverse Zero Mission.

The Space Pirates actually become a threat, and capture Samus and "take" her suit to reverse engineer it (like they did with her beams in Prime).

They fully dismantle it and it's a MGS style romp around this Space Pirate stronghold. (though it wouldn't be long before you get the power suit back) You find the pieces as you go and slowly regain your powers.

Best part of my idea is you could place it damn near anywhere in the timeline if you wanted.
