I've known that. But that only works if you haven't sparked to the right before all of that (which I'm pretty sure I did). And the timing must be extremely precise. I've never really pulled it off before. And I'm not really sure if it saves much time at all considering you have to leave out the previous spark to pull it off. Unless you can do it fairly easy, stick with the other method.

Well what do you know. I was just looking through our box of home videos to see if I could find any tapes that nobody had used yet(so I wouldn't have to buy the tapes), and I found exactly three tapes still in their plastic wrapping, and on the back it says something about two hours in SP mode. I guess that saves me some money Laughing .

cool. this is a bit ironic considering i'm just finishing the vhs part of the speed running faq, but hey, more power to you.
I've tried that too(the speed trick), but never been able to do it. The GBP still hasn't come, but I've been practicing a lot. I've got the first segment down(start---save before gaint plant) and I'm trying to get 8 there, but I'm not sure it's possible.

I have a save on my practice file, right after giant plant. I'm working on doing a fast SA-X encounter, and I'm doing pretty good too. I'm trying to do what sess did, except for not pressing right when I jump over the beam, so it only shoots once. It's pretty hard, but I've gotten pretty good at it and have a succes rate of about 50%, and sometimes can do it about five times in a row. I'm planning on doing this after giant plant(without saving) and then saving right before serris. Wish me luck!
Doh!
I forgot about one spark, so I found another. Oh well.
I don't have access to my computer, that has the video files, so I can't check them right now.
Well, I'm doing progress at PYR... But sectors 2 and 4 were bad, so I'm thinking of trying for a better Main Deck/SRX segment 1, and following this by a much better sectors 2 and 4.
wow, good luck, everyone. who knew this would get so popular.

You'd need it... a 50% failure rate after the mother of all randomness? That's going to take a hell of a long time to optimize...
I'm getting better, so it will be higher than 50%, but I'm still dreading giant plant. I think I'll go with four jumps like usual......
For some reason I feel strangely vindicated that people are speed-running Fusion.

I look forward to the videos when they're posted.
The bad thing is, once everyone gets the minimal time, the vids will be almost exactly alike.

:\
are you confident :49 is the minimum time or something, w.dawgs?
I would believe tat :48 would be the minimum

I'm gonna play Metroid Fusion Again. First I must find it.
Hmm, I should borrow my friend's copy again. I know I can do better than 1:51!!!
I'm gonna try to beat my last record

Last:1:09 19%
45 would be the fastest time, but thats impossible. It would have to be a SSS(Sessive Single Segment)Run. Nate, when are you going to add Ice missile backwards to the tricks page?

I'm about 70% confident.

lol. kridly, my m2k2 watchdog. i'm going to add it as soon as i:

1) finish the speed running faq (working on it right now),
2) update the super metroid section,
3) update the metroid prime section, and
4) update the zero mission section.

there is also one whopping secret project i'm working on with some other people, so that may require some of my time as well.

thanks for keeping up with these things. obviously, i'm not perfect, so it helps to have people who care on board.
If I could, I'd be glad to help with some of those things, like updating the trick sections of the games. But sadly, I don't have a clue how to do anything concerning websites or stuff like that.
well, that doesn't really mean anything. if you want to submit vmus/text, go right ahead. that makes it virtually impossible for me to get out of updating.
Let's see... The way things are looking now, (with my sister coming from Ireland this week, friends, and FFXI next week) my run will be done by christmas. Or a bit later, midsummer next year?

I did do a incredibly bad run, which somehow ended up in my personal record time of :57. I don't know how the hell that happend, but I guess what I now think is bad is actually good compared to what I did 2 months ago.

And I think that if you did a near-perfect SS run, you'd get :47 or :46. That is, if you use the 6% strat.
If you skipped ETs, didn't get hurt, and got one more missile tank, maybe you could save once, without ruining your time. The :46 means, 0:46:5X. Better than that would be impossible when you use the now-know tricks.

I hate my first segment, since I don't seem to get missiles in SRX. Not even the stabilizor-Xs give me enough missiles... That's why I think I'll grab another missile tank... And there is only one to choose from, unless I want to waste LOTS of time, and that is in Main Deck, going to SRX, in the room above the first NAV room.
Any objections to this missile tank?
I'm sorry about the double post, but I don't think I've posted this anywhere on this board...
Quote from ShadowJedi:
You start out by pressing "l" and down once, while walking towards Ridley so he'll come to life.
Then start charging your beam, and start spacejumping in the top-left corner. Use "r" to fire your beam (never let go of "b" and "l"), and only shoot when Ridley is facing away (giving you extra space to spacejump in).

If you do everything well, you'll never get hit, and it goes pretty fast.

It's, as you can see, a nice 1% tactic. I beat Ridley at (almost) any% speed.
Actually, I've beaten Ridley-X on a 1% run without getting hit without using that tactic, and it went pretty fast for me as well. The key it to fire in a pattern that makes him do what you want him to do, which is the tail whip (or more accurately the tail bounce).

(All charge beam shots BTW) Stand about 1/2 "blocks" from the left wall, and don't move until after the 6th shot. Start by shooting him twice while he's on the ground, then wait until he's fully in the air, and shoot him 4 more times. This will get him to tail whip. Roll into a ball and get behind him so he'll start taill bouncing, then roll under one of his bounces. Stand up and fire 2 charged shots, and repeat the whole process. Don't fire more than 2 shots or you may knock him out of tail whip mode, and don't fire only once or it may not be enough to get him to tail whip (it might sometimes, not guaranteed though).

Note this isn't 100% guaranteed to work, as there seems to be some random factor in there. But this tactic seems to work about 50% of the time (provided I pull it off correctly). The first time I did a 1% run it took me well over 20 tries to beat him. Last time it took 3.
I just got the GBP about an hour ago, and I played around with it for a bit. I haven't started recording yet because I have a problem. When playing with the GBP, it doesn't fill up the whole screen, even when I change the setting to fullscreen. How do I make it take up the whole screen?

You don't. I think Nate crops the vids.
Don't use fullscreen anyway. It distorts the graphics a bit as well.

On the best times note (or rather my 1% single segment run): Made it to Nightmare today without too much trouble. If I had avoided him one more time I could have killed him too...and it's virtually smooth sailing from there with my luck for Ridley-X battles.

Next time I guess  8)
Good luck with that SS run.
I'll only try that if I get really bored sometime.
