This has been pondering myself for some time. And when you think about, and compare it to its closest relative, you find out all the advantages this beam has. But in reality, is it truly the best beam of any metroid game?

Now, i decided to create all the pros and cons, to further enhance my decision. so here they are:

Pro's:
- can do more than damage ennemies and open doors.
- works in tandem with the echo visor.
- works almost like a missile(homing into in other words).
- It fires possibly the strongest combo in all metroid games.
- And the quickest combo.
- stuns enemies.
- hurts Ing(a lot!)
- can be used to acquire both light and dark ammo.
- rapid fire

Con's:
- has ammo(250max)
- charge combo takes up too much ammo.
-... (dont know about others, if there are any...)

So lets here what you have to say makes this the possible best beam of metroid history.
Thread title:
Annihilator pales in comparison to the Plasma Beam from Super Metroid, in my opinion. The fact that it doesn't do much in the way of annihilating is the first complaint I have, and the ridiculous premise behind it is the second. "Let's fuse dark and light matter together and see what happens? Oh SNAP, this is the most kickassingest thing ever!!"

No thanks. However, its charge combo was the only one of the three that was remotely useful, and it did have that nifty homing effect. I guess my chief issue is that it's only useful against two things - the final bosses. Other than that, it seemed almost pointless.

Oh, and the beam animation was cool. That is, the way her cannon looks when it's equipped.

I agree, Tim. The Plasma Beam from SM is by far the most powerful beam ever, imo. One shot kills pretty much any enemy, and it has the same rate of fire as any other Beam in the game. Stack it with the Charge, Wave, and Spazer, and you're unstoppable.

Not the Spazer, right? I mean, you'd freeze the game every time you fired (pretty much, mostly on cart).

But I agree, the plasma beam is the strongest beam in all the Metroid Games, and Wave*+Plasma from Fusion is second.

* in fusion, if you use cheats to get only wave, it gets all the powers except for Charge; and Charged Plasma doesn't hurt the SA-X, only the Wave.

Auto Homing. Sometimes you can hide in cornors and look at the radar and fire and it will probly home right to the enemey.

Plus I use Dark Beam for Everything because i find it more effective that the Aniliator beam. The only time i'd Probly use it is during the EI battle.

i'd like annihalator a lot more if it opened light and dark doors. wouldn't make it much more useful though.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
As Tim pointed out, it really doesn't annihilate anything, Sure it shoots really fast and homes in on enemies, but if you use half your ammo trying to hit an enemy that the beam doesn't seem to want to hit it kinda loses value.
If you're gonna give a beam a kick ass name like "Annihilator" it better do what is advertised.

yeah, that's bait and switch. annihilator for crappinator
i'm suing!
I think we can all agree that the Hyper Beam is the best...

i second that notion. the hyper beam kills kraid in one hit (using cheats, obviously), but then you can't get the varia. tis super powerful. i was saddened by the crappiness of the phazon shot in echoes though. if everything else wouldn't bounce off i'd use something else...like annihilator, because of it's firing speed. or the hyper beam, in my own reality...

AGREED!!!

That's my biggest complaint with it... it feels "watered down" to me... chances are it started off more powerful, but then they found it made the game TOO easy so they weakened it to balance it out... unfortunately leaving it as significantly less than "annihlating".

This all goes back to my dislike of the way they implemented the beam system in the first place... they tried to cover up the flaws in the dark/light system by adding beam ammo, which does nothing but make you less likely to use those beams. The "crappinator" (I like that, think I'm going to use that now - thanks Odylg) is even worse. It uses both ammo, but hardly makes that up in effectiveness... the only thing I really like it for is EI and making super beacons when warrior ing are around.

oh yeah! i forgot that light beacon + crappinator = oooh, shiny, i wanna touch it...ow! it burns!

i like to go back to agon and get the key you have to fight all the warrior ing for, then do that. just for the hell of it

other than THAT, it has little use
I like the annihilator, it looks awesome but it's not too great to fight Ing with, except hitting the light beacon and making that super strong Ing-keeper-awayer. I do like the charge combo, mostly because it's strong and looks great 8) .
The only real use I found for the Annihilator was to use it against the Emperor Ing's eye. Other than that, I stuck with the light and dark beams to clean house for me.

That's by far the biggest thing that irritated me, especially in the Dark World when there were multiple enemies. I'd try to hit something and the beam would home in on something closer that wasn't even attacking me (my "fondest" memory was toying with some Warrior Ing in Plain of Dark Worship, and the beam kept zooming off to the left to hit some Ing that was like, sleeping, or something, while three more were charging at me. :P). Bwah!

Heh, yeah, my mistake. Wasn't even thinking. Spazer+Charge+Wave is the best until you get Plasma.

Indeed, the murder beam is pretty strong, but I don't think that counts. Wink

My main problem with the annihilator beam was that it didn't perform as advertised. If I pick up a weapon called "annihilator", I want it to be strong enough to make me eant to say "holy shit!" when I fire it for the first time. SM plasma did this. Hyper beam did this. Both Super and Prime's super missiles did this. The annihilator beam did not. The name would be more fitting for a super-powered beam combo than a beam itself.
Beware: off duty ninja
well, I think the a beam gets an f minus minus. you have  (in my opinion) the light beam, which just overpowers anything dark, and the dark beam what overpowers anything light. the a beam had so much potential ( I would have like to have seen the light/dark beams do much less damage to thier intended foes and have the a beam MP plasma strong) what with the very cool blending of the two beams, but can't win them all. also, like some other people have said, it's kind of a pain to want to shoot one enemy only to have the beam choose it's own target and fly off . . . .
The supposed greatest strength of the beam became its greatest weakness...
Super charging those ligh beacons was the single greatest thing in the game! What was more satisfying than seeing a Hunter Ing slowly floating towards it's own death.

Other than that though, I hardly ever used it. Charged dark beam for me, thank you.
in the name of justice!

There's like, nothing to fight after you defeat Quadraxis.  You may as well just screw past everyone, and take like the three hunter ing fights on your way to the keys.

Super Light Beacons are crazy fun though.  No doubt.  Too bad there's STILL no use for them.  Except ONE room with six warriors.
Not only that, but Hunter Ing are some of the only enemies it works on.  Most enemies just sort of stop and stare when a Super Beacon is activated... I know Warrior Ing and Dark Splinters do.

So true. Another reason why the Annihilator sucks. Here's to hoping that the next Prime game lets you get the final Beam earlier, such as when you get the Plasma in SM. That was awesome.
The annihilator SUCKS. I never use it except for multiplayer :D and to light up Super Beacons. Every time I do the echo visor beam ammo puzzle in Temple Grounds, the shots always go off towards the pirates.....
Charged light beam is way better in every way.
I feel that the annihilator was meant to be useful in Multiplayer only. It just sucks everywhere else.
