For some reason, I can picture Metroid Fusion having rpg elements. The whole concept of absorbing the x-parasites to become stronger just seems like it would click with a leveling up system, rather than being downgraded to walking collectibles. Samus gains abilities from core-x so why shouldn't she be able to exploit the DNA picked up by regular X-parasites as well? Maybe it's just me but it seems like the "only core-x can give you abilities" mechanic is a little far fetched.
Thread title:
What'd you say?
I could see it going along with a level system, just remove the e-tanks and missile packs from the game, after you absorb enough small x parasites your energy/missile count would increase, but the way I see it would involve keeping the core-x giving upgrades still. Sounds like an interesting metroid game actually.  Cool
One shall stand, one shall ball.
yeah man level grinding sounds totally cool in metroid
What'd you say?
Not grinding, I'm not saying you need like 500 x parasites for one e-tank more like every 50 you get 5 missiles and every 100 you get an e-tank.
it kinda is already. you steadily get more health and weapons with real time fighting. instead of experience, the boss just drops the next upgrade.
I was thinking more of level grinding but using it as a substitute for energy tanks and missile tanks would be good too.  Wink I would definitely say that the x-parasite concept was heavily underutilized in this game, all they are is power-ups that move, not exactly an innovative title.
I hate points and leveling-up systems.  I would be pissed if they put that in Metroid.  That's a stepping stone for more lame shit like turn-based combat.

I don't mean ALL Metroid games, just Fusion. At the very least, the x-parasites could've been more than just moving power-ups. It's no different than any other game except the powerups look like mucus and move.
red chamber dream
i think half the fun of metroid games, especially fusion, is running through rooms while avoiding and not killing enemies. they're platformers, after all. however i do think a metroid rpg would be cool; it'd just have to be done differently (ie not a platformer).
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
You could have it first person, with an upgrade system similar to System Shock, or Deus Ex.

Holy crap, I just thought of the possibility of fighting SA-X with good AI and in 3D.

Where's Houston when you need him?
All aboard the soul train
Well, it'll probably never happen.

But there's always Castlevania, right?

Right...?

Uh, data rooms do too, dude. It's like you're supposed to get pieces of your suit back little by little. Some upgrades are uploaded to data rooms for some reason, others are given back by the major X organisms. Besides, the X had been the enemies you fought throughout the sectors. They're not just flying mucus that gave you ammo.

I'm not so sure about that. I think they're more action/adventure. They're (supposed to be) much more about exploration and fighting hostile alien creatures that climb across ceilings viciously than getting from point a to point b across a series of platforms or lack thereof.

Heh, Houston. I remember that guy. I miss bugging him.

I mean the fact that normal x-parasites don't give you jack except energy/missiles. It seems like the minor x-parasites would atleast have some enemy ability that could be absorbed by Samus. They may be the enemies, but that's just it. There's no difference between the x-parasites and enemies in other games in the series. Only difference is the x-parasites that replace the health/missile pick ups can move. It would make more sense if Samus could somehow absorb enemy abilities through minor x-parasites.

Like if you could absorb Bulimia from the hornoads, and Super Stretch from the stretchies? I guess there could have been a couple useful abilities, but there are just too many enemies to get a skill from each of them IMO. The seahorses that have that orb that spirals around them looks useful though.
True but it would've been nice for them to atleast be more than pickup replacements.

Maybe, but if they didn't have them at all, then you kind of get stuck from not having refills, don't you? Unless you feel like running back to a recharge room every couple minutes. At least some of the X combine to form stronger enemies. Although even that is pretty dumb since you can't absorb them yet even though they're just floating around. But yeah, I don't think they ever gave it any more thought than considering it a very convenient plot device to explain refills. For this game, they tried specifically to make a story, and kind of lost focus on the game.

But the thing is, it's still not even remotely an RPG, and IMO it shouldn't be. Sure, some people liked Adventure of Link, but it's pretty unpopular among many Zelda fans. You might love the idea, but BioSpark probably doesn't. It's a nice idea to have it appeal to more people, but you have to remember that sometimes, ideas can turn other people off. To give an extreme example, people flat-out HATE Nintendo and everything it does because of graphical reasons and because their target audience is a couple years younger than them. If you spend a couple thousand dollars boosting the picture quality and give Zelda only a couple ribbons as clothing, sure it might appeal to a lot of people.

But perhaps I'm veering a bit off topic. I guess you're not saying Fusion should have been like this as much as posing it as an interesting hack, right? In that case it probably belongs in the hacks discussion board or something, I'm not sure. But I guess I just thought I could offer my reasoning for not liking the idea. I admit, it is more of a personal tastes kind of debate. I'm also apparently tired and rambly tonight. O_o

Oh jeebus, it's the "of Sorrow" games!

You mean like an alternate version of Samus who is evil, that you fight in 3D? Perhaps she could have a black suit! Maybe tie her in to the whole phazon storyline... WAIT. This is sounding familiar.
