I can't stand Gameboy games.  I could never get into Metroid II, as much as I desperately wanted to.  I remember when the first Metroid came out.  I played it MANY MANY times, and of all the original NES games I owned/traded/sold, that was the one I never got rid of.  But when they tried to continue the Metroid saga on a tiny Gameboy screen, I just didn't get it.  It's like trying to recreate the immersive atmosphere of a huge planet on something you'd play on your watch.  To this day, I've NEVER played Metroid II through to the end, and I probably never will.  And yes, I've tried.  Besides, once Super Metroid came out, that's when things REALLY started getting good.  :)

Sorry for the "old man" rant, but I had to say it.

Truth be told, GameBoy didn't have many titles really worth going out of your way for.

GameBoy Advance is quite another story though.
Samus Lauren
Ya know, I never really got into it either. I've played it, yes, but i was more content on watching my brother play it on our Super Gameboy than actually playing it myself.
I just finished playing some RoS on GB Player. I must say it was an enjoyable experience.
Actually, I have to add that I did enjoy Tetris for the original Gameboy.  But I think that's because it was a bunch of SHAPES.  Not like original NES graphics look so great now, but at the time, it was just sort of disappointing to have the Metroid series go backward, visually.

ROS may have been colorless but it's actually slightly more detailed than it's older brother.
Personally I loved my old Gameboy. I thought it was a lot better than the other handheld system at the time. My GB no longer works though sadly. Now it lies under my bed covered in dust. Crying or Very sad

Samus's design evolved tenfold between Metroid 1 and Return of Samus. Just compare both graphics side by side, and if you ignore the black and whiteness of RoS you can see the superiority of it.
I have a Gameboy emulator (BGB version 0.66b) and Nester, I'm comparing... yeah, the detail is better in II, and I could get over the fact that it was in black & white (or off-shades of yellowish gray)... but I'm realizing now it's the screen size that bugged me.  In order to see anything, they had to practically cut it in half, and that just made everything... well, smaller.  That frustrated me, for one.

The other point I wanted to make was that the music just SUCKS.  There's a few decent melodies scattered around, most notably the main title theme (the one that kicks in after about a minute of bizarre noises); but trying to build atmosphere with avant-garde dissonance on a GAMEBOY just didn't work, in my opinion.  Unless there's some soundtrack elements later in the game that I'm missing...

And finally, I might just be soured on the whole Gameboy thing because some a**hole stole mine. :)

Is the Gameboy Color version much better?
just in case you wanted to listen
that piece is flickerbat sweet. very calming to me, if you would believe it...helped me through a hard time :P

very hall of mirrors-esque, if you know your kraftwerk.
I agree. Musically Metroid 2 sucks. The main title is really the only good song except for maybe the end credits.
I too could not even bare to play M2,  I only first played it when the GBC game out and I could someewhat colourize it.

I did manage to complete the game a few months on the Gameboy Player.  This game is in serious need of a remake.  The atmosphere is amazing,  you are mapless, the only clues you have are metroid shells, when you see one you know a metroid is near,  the music will drop off when you get closer to a metroid, then the battle begins.  The  game really gets intense near the end, as you have to face a series of metroids, each taking 30 (successfull) missiles,  with no refill station close by.

I would really like to see this game remade, its truly is a great game on a poor system
I never played it before.
I played RoS coming off of a game of Super Metroid so my first impression was... ugh!  But, being it was Metroid and all, I kept with it.  I must say, it was a pretty good game.  The different types of Metroids in conjunction with the different items, i.e. the spider ball, were cool and made it engaging enough that I played through it all, albeit with a map on hand.  Those Omega Metroids were tough!  A lot tougher than the Omega Metroid boss in Fusion.

I think I'm with luciverse on this one and I'm going to have to say that this puppy deserves a remake, almost as much as the original did.  I mean, it's the most overlooked title in the series, I'd say Nintendo could do a lot of messing around with it, especially if a lot of Metroid freaks give it a mediocre rating (see only other thread in this forum).  Think of it getting an overhaul to the level MZM got over the original.  That'd be a pretty sweet game.

It'd also be good because it breaches from the typical Metroid style and focuses on the series namesake with no Ridley or Kraid in sight.  I'd say we need a little revisit to the land of Metroids since we haven't seen many of them in any Metroid game except Prime and of course RoS. Although, I suppose the less you see of them, the greater the impact their eventual appearance has.  Anyway, I'd like to see it updated but I won't hold my breath waiting.
Well, Metroid 2 could really use a DX version for the GBA (like Zelda Link's Awakening DX for GBC) with full color graphics and an in-game map.  Hopefully if Zero Mission does real well, Metroid 2 DX will soon follow.
I think Metroid II needs a Zero Mission treatment more than just a DX treatment.

Metroid II DX was in the works when the GBC was just coming out, but for reasons unknown it was canceled.
I really want to play Metroid II

Go snag a copy of it at your local Gamestop, if you're lucky enough to find it. I saw it last year, used for $10 at Gamestop but I got Link's Awakening DX instead.

*sits in the corner wearing the dunce hat*

If all else fails, d/l the rom.  I can hook you up in that regard.

Take that dunce hat off Faust. You made the right choice.  :D
Ill get it After I find time to play Metroid Zero Mission.
Heh, even though I bought Link's Awakening a year ago, I still haven't finished it.  I got stuck and said, meh, about 2 months after getting it.

So the dunceness applies.

Come to think of it, I haven't beaten The Wind Waker yet either and I got it when it first came out.  What the fuck is wrong with me!?
Oro...I finished both games near the time they came out.
At the time when i first got it (back in elementary school) it was cool as hell, hard, and not easy to follow but still cool. now i can't play it, i get to some areas and i can't see anything because my eyes can't focus on the enemies or the background. 4 shades of gray just doesn't work for me anymore. i don't wear glasses but if i play that game again i'd have too or something. some of the enemies are too small for me to even see. that and i get really lost. a remake would be awesome something like they did with zero mission.
RoS's controls felt 'floaty' .. kinda typical for a gameboy game. Oh well, my favorite original gameboy games were the final fantasy legend series games and FF adventure. Can't go wrong with Wario either. I don't like to see gameboy bashing, however, I think for all the bad mouthing Fusion gets, this title is the one that deserves it more. It's lava that goes down as you kill Metroids make it about as or more linear than Fusion.
