Recently I got bored with Zero Mission so I decided to challenge myself.  The idea is a no save run on hard mode.  The farthest I've gotten is to the last save in the suitless area.  Its fairly frustrating because you must do kraid first or it is nigh impossible to fight the other bosses/mini-bosses, due to lack of super missiles and saves.

If anyone succedes let me know.

What you're talking about is usually called a single-segment run.  They're certainly not easy; one serious mistake means starting over from the beginning.  (At least Zero Mission is shorter than most Metroid games.)  I'd be surprised if a Hard single-segment has never been tried, but so far there aren't any at SDA.

You know it's possible to get Super Missiles before Ridley in a Ridley-first game, right?  There's a tank sitting out in the open shortly before his room, and then you can backtrack a bit and get another one.  If you're not going for speed, you can get Imago's tank too.
I've managed single-segment runs in all the Metroid games, but not ZM hard mode. That's gonna be a tough one...

not to sound like a braggart, but 100% SS hard and 100% SS normal aren't that different except for the last boss, and if your only goal is survival then you should be able to pull it off without too much of a problem. in fact, if you were simply trying to complete a hard single segment run, getting 70-99% would be ideal.

in fact, our very own Dragondarch has completed several:

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest too.  In case you don't know this, rain, it's very important not to get 100% in this situation.  Mecha Ridley's HP triples when you have 100%, which is a nice extra challenge, but only when you can save before him.  He's too powerful to take the chance in a single-segment run, especially on Hard.

If I were trying this myself, I would be sure to collect all the Super Missiles and all but the hardest Energy Tanks.  I wouldn't go out of my way for normal Missiles, but I'd grab all the ones in plain sight.  The Varia takes a couple of extra minutes to get, but I'd get it -- it basically doubles your HP, which means a much better chance of surviving Mother Brain.  As for route, I'm a Ridley-before-Kraid guy in any% games, and this would be no exception.  (It's always good to have Super Missiles against Kraid.)  Of course, all this is from my perspective, and I know that I could never pull off an SS run if I were playing for speed too.  A stronger player -- or just one with more spare time -- wouldn't need as much insurance.

Yeah, the only thing that would impress me more than 100% SS would be the  just foolish 9% Normal SS.

I thoroughly agree with Zeke for the SS general tips.  Honestly, I'd reccommend Varia since it opens you up for one of the best upgrades against MB (and Iron Ted's missiles)-the Screw Attack.  Kraid, I did last night in my 15% hard (Screw Attack and 5 bonus missile packs) with no Supers, and he was much easier than I expected.  Finally got Ridley too, I had the BIGGEST problem with the Ridley cheese (which you should definitely use) for a long time.
Thats for the advice, I generaly go, ice beam high jump varia then kraid.  It is more of a force of habit, since the first time I played through thats how I got the items.

A question for speed, do the map scenes with the chozo statues make the timer run? Is it faster to bomb over the one after the ice beam or to let it heal you?

Yes, you can get 6 in a hard kraid first.  I think you can get 2 in a ridley first, plus the energy tanks right near ridleys room are very helpful to get first.

Hehe third edit: Is it considered illegal to use the heal part of the save stations in the suitless area?

Otherwise, I've made it to metal-ridleys room, but I die nearly instantly because I only have 12 tanks and I am not the best metroid player.

If you count the number of tanks in the stuff you just quoted, that's 3 in Ridley's area, unless you were only talking about ones you can get without backtracking to Imago.  Or fight him first, but the one and only time I tried doing something besides getting every powerup I could as soon as I could I spent something like 20 minutes trying to beat him with 10 missiles and no charge beam.  Eventually I got bored and let him kill me.

Don't see why not; I think most runs that have any e-tanks at all heal up in the first save area since you start that segment with all your tanks empty.

I had the same problem after I picked up the game after two months this week.  Except, I had like six E-Tanks which made it 140x as humiliating.

dear duo maxwell: you sir, are a sadist for wishing that upon anybody. do you know what will happen to the poor runner that has to destroy the zebetites in that run? or having to deal with meta ridley? just thinking about doing that makes me want to laugh. if you really want to be torturus, 9% Euro hard run that must be both SS and no hit. if we're torturing the poor people here, let's make it worth our effort  Twisted Evil
