so today, after learning through some of the help menu, i made my first 3d model in maya (my second one ever overall).  i don't know how to render or texture yet, so i'll have to wait on that until i do.  anyway:

What type of modeling did you use: NURBS, Polygons, or Subdivisions? The two classes I've had recommend using strictly polys if you're going for something that would end up in a game.

For being your second only model through MAYA, I'd say you're off to a great start. For my final project in 3D Modeling last semester I attempted to make and texture my first ever Human figure: A lot tougher than you'd expect, and by that point I'd only had about a year with the program. From what I can remember, you're a lot farther already than I was at that stage, so that's probably a good sign for you. (I probably started out a bit ahead of where I should've been though.)

Texturing something properly and making it look good is arguably the toughest and most time consuming thing to do, so I would recommend learning the modeling techniques first. As for rendering, being able to render out an image is not hard at all, but it takes a little while to get the right settings and appearance you'd probably want.

But the model itself looks pretty good in my opinion. Did you have some sort of reference while trying to make it, or was this straight from memory? (If setup properly, References help out SO MUCH when you are going for accuracy.)

i used two pictures i took from ssbm for reference.  they don't exactly match up, but were relatively close.  i also used polygons, simply because i haven't read the stuff on the other two yet. =p

I don't know much about NURBs or Subdivisions either, since I've had to focus on polygons for my classes.

But you're definitely a lot farther along already than I ever was at that stage. Sounds like you have a good handle on what needs to be done in order to make good models, based on my experiences. 8-)

Can't wait to see other models from you down the line. Always cool to see what another artist is capable of.
