Okay, I'm done with this forum. Since you know, I want to use an actual on-topic forum, not a chat room, and you've made it clear this is not what this site is. Doesn't help that the management absolutely does not give a shit.

the management hasn't needed to give a shit for like 7 years. besides, the only active management is ark, toozin, dj, and me. afaik toozin only posts in the social boards, and i know dj certainly doesn't care. there's nothing i could do to change ark's mind anyway. he likes to troll and be offensive in situations like this, especially given the age of the forum. i agree with him that the more serious topics tend to avoid irrelevant discussion, but i'm sure a few topics have been derailed when they shouldn't have. however, this forum is good at self-moderation, so the thread will either get back on topic or die out. given the current state of the metroid franchise, as well as the size and maturity of this forum, i'm surprised anyone is upset with something that goes on here (except for ark's excessive shit posting). he's of the mindset that people shouldn't care, and when they do he just finds it funny.

so yes, the management doesn't care, because they aren't teenagers anymore with nothing better to do. so if there is such a thing as "the next generation of metroid players", m2k2 may or may not be the place for them to go. the forum has long been more about social discussion than game discussion. if some other place becomes the next cool metroid hangout, then that's a reality the whole management would be fine with. it's already been happening anyway, with things like skype groups, twitch, youtube, reddit, etc.

tl;dr m2k2 is shitty and old, and moving actual gaming discussion somewhere else is not a bad idea.
Anywhere, everywhere
I'll make my own forum.

With blackjack. And hookers.
I've always thought Miles had a stick up his ass, but there's no way I can't take his side on this. He literally got rebuffed when he asked a site administrator to please stop spamming his thread. Essentially what I'm getting from Arkarian is "I'm going to do whatever I want and there is nothing any of you can do about it, and I don't care if the best and most respected players don't like it and leave the site because of it." Pretty childish if you ask me, especially for someone over 30.

it's not "his thread". m2k2 forum is a community where he posted a thread. that's exactly the ego nonsense i was talking about. i don't care about that.

i don't want to do whatever i want, i want to do nothing, and nothing is what i do. see: the past 6 years.

also, he didn't ask a site administrator to please stop spamming his thread. no idea where you got that from. for one, i'm not a site administrator, and also if he had asked nicely, there wouldn't have been a problem. people have complained before about "zomg double posting" and i never minded.

it's the fact that he postd a pencil icon in his typical passive-aggressive way. miles never posts anything not directly related to metroid unless it's sarcastic. i asked him to elaborate but he didn't. i have no interest in associating with those sort of people. it's just scummy. of course i'm going to bite back.

guess i was just fed up with all of it over the years
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I find it funny that threads only really go to shit around here when people complain about the thread going to shit. Especially the game specific boards, those have generally done a good job of self moderating even back when people really cared about this series and this place was active. Used to be the people who made posts that just told everyone to get back on topic got told to stop minimodding. Otherwise the thread righted itself once someone had something to add.

I mean mods still used to have to actually do things beyond enforce the minimodding rule but it typically required more than a meandering thread conversation. This one was really standard m2k2 until whatever the hell happened, happened.
red chamber dream
that is precisely the point i've been trying to make, but no one who doesn't post in the social boards understands.

if people had wanted to talk about this topic they would have, and had no one complained and it not all blown up, there would still be conversation in this thread. i would be long done ragging on echoes and would have gone back to the social boards by now >_>
red chamber dream
it's really just a couple people with egos, that's all it is lol

as for the metroid stuff, this forum really shouldn't be a record of anything considering it could vanish any time now. i highly recommend putting anything you want permanent somewhere else
One shall stand, one shall ball.
One of thsoe big 20/20 hindsight things is that if we wanted to keep a better record of things we should have been rebooting the speed tricks threads every so often with newer stuff in the first post, would have been way easier to keep up with everything! But then we also thought we had a website to archive all that stuff at the time I guess lol.
red chamber dream
yeah and there's been wikis and other stuff for years now. i certainly haven't thought of the forum as a go-to place for up to date information in a long time
I just open nearly every new thread that has new posts in it and comb for convo that interests me.  The thread titles are a decent guide as to what the thread is about, but if I open the thread and see that the current posts are not on that topic then I just keep combing. Besides, I might find a convo that's more interesting than the thread title implied.  I can see how someone might get a little annoyed with having to do that, but I become infinitely more annoyed with mods poking people with poopy sticks all the time.
How much time would this save in 100% if it was considered legit?

it's sort of difficult to run a forum in any sort of tight way when the site's owner no longer participates in it. anarchy is somewhat guaranteed because the appearance of authority becomes a sham. anyone who wants this forum to be something it currently isn't could try appealing to nate about it, if you can reach him. that's really all I can suggest.

regarding the four byte missile counter: obviously I haven't seen the code in question but it may be that it was defined as one byte in the source code but promoted to four bytes by the compiler.

why would you ever want that to happen? i guess it doesn't matter for a game, where you'd know how much memory you have access to ahead of time, but what is the use of that?

True that.

I was barely even aware of the existence of the social boards before this incident. I've never really the felt the need to discuss my personal engagements with strangers on the internet. I don't really care what's considered standard conduct in the social boards because this isn't a social board.
