As I gradually whiddle my way down to a 10% run, I began wondering: which item is the best for the last 1%?
In my mind, at least, it's up in the air between Super Missile and Screw attack, unless there's some advantage of the extra Missile Tank that I'm unaware of.

The main advantage of the super missile tank, it seems, is that it makes Tourian 100 times easier. You'd actually be able to kill a metroid every now and then. Also, boss fights would go alot faster, which is good when you only have 99 health.

The screw attack, on the other hand, makes the game starting from Mother Brain and ending at the end a LOT easier. You can screw attack through MB's rinkas (or whatever they're called) and Mecha Ridley's missiles. On the other hand, it makes the room leading up to MB alot more tedious and challenging.

So what's the professional opinion of the guys who have actually done this run?
Thread title:
im not a 10% hard player but i would use the screw attack because you can destroy mecha ridleys missiles but wen you fight him without super missiles its a bit hard

Well, I know that Aj takes an extra regular missle tank. He explained why, but I forgot. It may not just be that it's in the way.
Quote from aj:
Soon after it was discovered that 10% is the lowest possible percent for hard mode, what with the 2 missiles per expansion, and that left me with three choices: an extra missile, an extra super missile, or screw attack. Screw attack required me to actually get screw attack, which is way out of the way, and also means I have one less missile or sm for... everything (especially the zebetites before motherbraind... SO bad). Getting a supermissile only gave me about 2 choices of which to get, either the one after you kill Imago (who would be very tough and time consuming with only 2 missiles) or the one above Ridley's room, where you have to dodge the missile tank. I've never tried to get that one, and I didn't this time either. Getting an extra missile just seems so... convenient.

Well, I guess that answers that. Looks like I'll be getting a super missile.
just get a missile because of mecha ridleys glass box

What does a missile have to do w/ ridley's glass box? He doesn't get cheap until AFTER you take it out.
The reason he gets the Missile is:
a. It's in the way. Avoiding it takes more time from what I remember.
b. There's less backtracking. With only 3 (2 Normal and 1 Super), you'll have to go through Chozodia the long way.
c. Most of Tourian is faster. Killing Metroids usually yield 2 Missiles. Grab those and kill a Cheerio and you have yourself another dead Metroid. Supers would be faster if there was a consistent way of them dropping.
d. Mecha Ridley battle looks cool 8)
Well, I've done a few 10% hard runs, including a single segment and I've tried with all setups.

I like the extra reg. missile as my 1%.

The extra SM makes boss battles easier in terms of speed (more damage = less time) but it restricts you since you only really have 3 usable missiles. And Tourian is pain with the extra SM.

I am currently in process of taking the SA over the missiles. While the SA helps greatly with enemies in Chozodia, etc, but it really doesn't do much for boss fights in terms of damage. Sure, you can defend better but when you're doing a 10% hard, you are good enough to dodge/etc,
And having only TWO missiles makes the game insanely frustrating.

Anyways, I go with the extra reg. missiles, but feel free to try both.
lol no way
*sigh*... one of the last times I'd be able to help someone with MZM and I don't notice the topic till it's too late. Wonderful.

Enlighten us with your expert opinion, aj!

I think he means everyone else enlightened you with his wisdom already.
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
Somehow his thoughts were transplanted into everyone else's brains, and he was too late to stop them.
Well, after getting the Varia Suit w/out hi-jump or power grip, which took me an estimated 33 tries (not counting the ones that didn't make it to that last flickerbating platform that dissolves after one second that you have to bomb jump off of flawlessly RRRRRGH), I can safely say that this is my last time EVER running through this game.
no offense but if you couldnt get varia early, how do you expect to do a 10% hard? they're quite difficult, probably not more than a handful of us have done them. Trust me, the end battle/escape seems like enough to make you go crazy. 33 tries on early varia? i probably fought MR 100 times.
You should have skipped Varia Suit ;). It doesn't do anything except add to time because you never reach any heated rooms with the 10% route.

It allows you to survive a hit from Ridley. Which was enough.
The armor just might be enough to survive me through the MB battle, which is proving troublesome.

What's all this about can't do varia early? I just said I did. I'm fully aware of the difficulty of the task I'm taking on. I'm just full of bravado after doing a 12% run.
So if I win, I reserve the right to point and laugh.  Twisted Evil
That's tough.

I bet it is extremly hard to fight all those bosses with only 10%.

As for the last 1%, an E-Tank, you never konw how much damage those monsters will do to you. :)

You can't. You need either a missle tank, a super missle tank, or the screw attack to make it through one section in Chozodia on hard mode.

I usually prefer to have as much energy before fighting the tougher monsters.

Some of them could take off as much as 100 HP from from your energy with  just 1 hit, or take you down fast.

But... that doesn't help you destroy the blocks in Chozodia.

Did you not read Yoshi's post? He said you need another Missile, Super Missile, or SA to beat the game in 10% Hard mode. It's fine that you like to get more energy, and perfectly reasonable... however, it won't help to complete the game with 10%.
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
It's not possible to beat it without one of those three, right?
Yeah, there's a segment in the Mother Ship that requires 3 Missiles. In hard, an expansion only gives you 2. Have 4 Missiles/Screw Attack gives you an alternate, faster route through the Mother Ship. Here's the link AJ's amazing diagram: http://www.metroid2002.com/ajbolt89/3-4missiles.PNG

I would have embedded it but it's way too big. Sparing some dial-up people here ;)

I talked to aj about this on MSN and I started playing and didn't realize (or forgot rather) that you needed 2 Missile tank or  1 MT and SA.

I played all the way to Tourian with only 2 Missiles. It was almost 100% impossible.

Ridley was easy due to the chessing strat.
Kraid is easy as it is, just long with 2 missiles.

Acid worm is the same as Kraid.

Tourian is impossible almost. I got to the room and save point before MB and that almost made me commit suicide but trying to get through the zebitites (sp?) was hard. Not only did you have to freeze 2 or 3 Rinkas around you, you had to do it several times, with 99 energy and no protection from lava.

I don't think it's possible. Be my guest and try.
