The Super Missile on crateria is in the upper right area, above where you collect the plasma beam. It is important in fast 100% runs because you can then clear out all of Ridley's Lair the first time through instead of having to backtrack later. It then enables you to get some early items in Norfair, if you so choose.

All of the movies/replays I have seen of this involve Samus doing an upper left (NW) shinespark, hitting the hill, then jumping up and to the right. This works -- however, I have easily spent over an hour and a half trying to duplicate it with no success. I've gone over every degree of the ground and haven't hit the hill! So I decided to try a different way.

This may be known but I think I'm the first to document it. I haven't seen mention of this anywhere. If this is already known feel free to yell at me.

Starting from the left, run to the right and charge as soon as you get to the pillar. Walljump up (without the hi-jump boots yet this takes maybe 3 jumps off the wall). When you reach the top, face left -- do not jump into the air -- and do a shinespark to the left. You will hit the hill perfectly everytime. Now you can recharge, spin up, shoot, and shinespark all the way to the right and get the SM. YAY!!!

NOTE: make sure "skip bios" is checked, if it doesn't work.

I'll be doing that from now on, thanks!

Is it ingenious, is is this the intended method and everyone else has looked so hard they've totally missed it for an overly complicated method? Regardless, good job BleedingSnow on a very nice find. I've seen the diagonal spark to the hill method before, and it doesn't look nice. I may be able to get these missiles myself now.
I can't watch that, but im judging its the one above samus' ship, right?

I just run through, turn into a ball on the left most edge of the hill, hold L and diagonal shinespark, took me about 10 minutes to try it as a morph ball, but once i did that, it took about 3 seconds for me to duplicate repeatedly.

I really want to know what the hell your doing though O_o.
Negative Aran.
oh, now i know which one your talking about.

yeah, that one was a bitch to do.. but with enough lining up i managed to do it with a diagonal shinespark... damn that was a bitch to do though..

I'll check out what you did when im not deadly tired... seems like it would be easier...

however, if you werent going to backtrack, why would you already have speedboost at that point in the game?
Not impossible
just highly unlikely

Because Kraid sans grip is faster.
**bangs head against wall.

You mean I spent forever perfecting getting that Super Missile the hard way? Oh well, it's old hat now, and keeping the charge long enough was a learning experience. :P

Great find. My thumbs thank you.
Actually, if you're going to jump onto that pillar, can't you do a mid-air shinespark to the right? Or can't you jump high enough to get to the super missiles?

And just for kicks, try collecting the missile expansion below as well ;)

As for the diagonal shinespark method, remember to hold down left; otherwise you'll just bump into the hill and stop moving.
That's how I always did it. The thing is, you need the space jump to get the right height. You have to charge the spark, get above the column, then two space jumps then shine spark. It's way too easy to lose the spark since you have just enough time to do the mid-air spark.

Actually, it's possible to do it with only the High-Jump as well, but I doubt you'd jump high enough without them.

I'd test it without High-Jump as well, but unfortunatly I don't have any save states.
Yeah, I tried just going to the right but I always hit the side of the ledge. And once up there you can't get the missiles (as far as I know) because you need to do a morphed ball jump, which requires the hi-jump boots. Once you get the SM it's easier to just spark all the way back to the left.
use a ibj (infinite bomb jump)
That...wont work
oops im thinkinf of a different SM tank sorry :P
Would it be faaster to get the super missile early with this trick or the trick in Brinstar?
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
How much faster is it though? Because if you know where to spark from to do up+left, I'm thinking it's probably around the same amount of time used to walk back over instead of wall jumping.

Or is it just easier to pull off (but I have no probs doing it the older way)?
It's a lot easier. I don't know how you guys could ever do it the other way...one millimeter and you're off.

The one in Brinstar requires the hi-jump boots, which are in norfair, which requires backtracking. So no.

Just gotta remember to have Samus' back leg over that plant, and goooooooooooooooo.
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this one requires the Space Jump.

That thair be wall jumpin', not that fancy-pants space jumpin'.
i just remember how i got this thing.

I know this wouldn't work for getting it "early" but i just run out through the chozo opening, then space jump up.. grab the ledge, get on it and release.. which allows me to dash to the super missile.

Its simple, its easy, and i don't have to worry about any excessively difficult timing involving shinesparks...

Still, would it be worth it to get it early?  You can already get a super missile in brinstar before you go into norfair... so.. should you bother with this?
If you're doing a 100% run, you should. Otherwise you don't really have to.
You can't get the Brinstar one before going into Norfair unless there's something I'm missing. You can't shinespark as a ball until you get the hi-jump boots...which are in Norfair.
