The Dragon Eggs and Derudes are pretty hilarious, like the game is just asking you to spend as much time as possible doing nothing particularly useful. "You don't have to grind, but you know you want this sweet shit we got for you if you do!"

Yeah lo. If not for them, the game would be over in no more than 15 hours.

Post preview:I'm about 3 hours into Fragile Dreams so far. The game is often being .. rather slow, that's pretty annoying.

As for Estpolis, doom island was as epic as it's supposed to be, but for different reasons than in the original. : / I'm on my second playthrough now and will do another attempt at getting to about floor 60 in the ancient cave.

Then I'll try chaining larvitars in PKMN Platinum. I want a shiny tyrannitar for SoulSilver.

Don't know if you guys care, since the game will probably not even get a US release, but I can tell you some details about new/changed game mechanics if you want me to.

I care. Do go on.

Battle mechanics are quite simple. Y button is attacking, X button is some kind of special attack that's usually used for platforming, A button is rolling(dodging) and B button is jumping. Also, holding the R button lets you unleash charge attacks using the Y and X buttons. Dodging is quite easy once you have the hang of it, so the game isn't very hard. It's also very easy to become overleveld due to the game being a grindfest.

And here's why: If you kill an enemy it'll stay lying on the ground for another split second. If you're fast enough to get another attack in you can start "overkilling", which is merely dealing damage to a corpse that doesn't fight back. Doing that grants you not only extra exp and gold, but also gives you a change of obtaining a "Derude". Derude drops usually become less per drop in a certain area, so they're not finite but can't be farmed at any place either.
That's because you can turn those in for some neat rewards, such as blue items. But for some reason you'll also often have to progress in the story to unlock these rewards, probably because they're quite easy to get as soon as you gain access to the ancient cave. Yeah, derudes drop in there and can be taken back outside, even if you manage to die in there.
For the first playthrough there are rewards for up to 600 derudes. You'll get around 400 if you normally carry on with the story, so there's quite a bit of ancient cafe grinding to do if you want to get everything. On the second playthrough, there are rewards for up to bout 1200 derudes. Sounds a lot, but you carry your amount from the first playthrough over, so it's not as bad is it seems.

What's completely new to the game is the Magic Stone Grid. It's, duh, a grid for you to place, duh, magic stones on. They'll grand stat boosts as well as unlock passive skills. You ca also get blue stones to carry over into the cave and into the NG+, which is quite neat. You can also combine these stones to make them stronger, but you'll need lots of money and even more lots of stones for that. And stones are usually obtained by killing the right enemies.

Like the ancient cave dragon eggs are still in the game too, but the way toobtain them is rather strange. You get them for beating certain bosses in a short timeframe (about 1minute each), which is way you want to stay overleveled for obtaining everything there is. Obviously this is another reason for grinding the hell out of this game.

The ancient cave is still randomized with 99 floors. Because of the new format it's a lot faster to clear than in the original, but chest contents are not completely randomized, as they only contain items on par to the floor you're currently on. This means you can't find stuff like a Gades Blade on the first few floors of the cave, forcing you to grind deep into the cave for the best rewards.
But you also get gold in there, and a way of spending it by using it to combine your blue stones with white stones you find in there (leveling up blue stones makes them stay blue). On a NG+ the cave will be open immeditaly once you enter the "world map", but the NPC used for combining stones will only be there after a certain point in the story. That sucks. Also, the earlier you go in there the less characters you will have with you.
I managed to die on floor 47 because I forgot to react to my characters being raped to death, as I was used to having lots of characters to swap through until game over. O:

And the cave is only open up to floor 30 on a first playthrough.

Post preview:Oh, yes, sure. Kinda quoted that from another forum where I had already said some stuff about the game.

Now that you remind me, I forgot ...

- Sound issues. Not very noticable when using the DS speaker, but there's a noticable amount of static when using headphones.

Sucks a lot since the best available music quality is what you would want to roll with for this game. :(

Bought Fragile Dreams yesterday. Played it for about one hour just now, because I actually managed to die that early in the game!
Controls are roughly the same as Shattered Memories. You've got a flashlight to move with your wiimote and move exactly the same as Harry using the nunchuck. my only gripe is that the wiimote controls are a bit less smooth, so moving the camera's kinda annoying at first since you have to move your wiimote quite a bit (and hold it in that angle).
Atmosphere's okay. Not really scary, but that might change for some places later on. Combat seems to be fun, I'm already loving the combat music.
What I have died to was btw a really unexpected enemy. That was way more scary than Shattered Memories's nightmares.

Now going to finish Estpolis. There's some more ancient cave farming ahead, once I'm done with that I'll go fly to doom island.

Hell yes. I played that with a friend years ago on my borther's copy. That game's tons of fun, especially on multi player mode.

Post preview:I'm almost done with my first playthrough of Estpolis, here's what I think of the game:

+ Better character designs, good adaption to the steampunk setting.
+ Characters have more personality.
+ Most events from the original are still there.
+ Battling and grinding is fun, the game's also not too long (15-20h for a playthrough) so you don't get tired of grinding.
+ Grinding is rewarded with blue items for both the ancient cave and the NG+
+ Good platforming puzzles that are not too easy overall
+ There's some sort of sphere-board (like in FFX) that adds to character customization and helps to prepare for the ancient cave

- The game's pacing gets pretty annoying near the end. Lots of "go there, talk, go there, talk" etc.
- WhatTheFuckDidTheyDoToYou@Sinistrals D: , they look all like zombies and don't differ much in their designs. There's also some suprise there ...
- Grindfest. Might not be fun for everyone.
- There are only about 15 locations to visit.
- So many events will take at one place instead of being spread over the whole world.
- Iris is part of the party (though not playable). Kinda kills her role I think
- Feels like there is no real balancing, game can be really easy if you want it to be
- No puzzles like whe know them from the original :(

I kinda do too, honestly. Ditching the stupid ratings alone is a great thing.

They're ditching threm because people rated corporal partner BS to death, often enough righteously.

It's pretty much Money > Voicing Opinions

Which isn't a good thing if you ask me.

Post preview:Just finished my second playthrough of Shattered Memories. Great game, just wish there were more puzzles. Exploration is fun on its own, but the game's still too close to some interactive movie BS for me. I also don't like how you don't earn the ending in any way, they just slap it into your face saying "hey, 'game' 's over".

I also recommend playing the game when being dead tired. Played it with a friend from 11PM to about 2:30AM and we've seen dozens of things that weren't even there. Tons of imaginary corpses, and my friend even held the plants in the river for raw shocks lingering out of the water. Fun stuff.

Going to spend some more time with Estpolis now.

Post preview:Great, got an Action Replay DS today. I wanted to get me some event pokemon, but now I'm returning it to amazon tomorrow. The cartridge overheated when I connected it to my PC and melted at some spots, rendering it unusable (because it won't connect to a PC anymore).

Somebody here owns an R4? I could get one for cheap money from a friend and heard they also support Action Replay codes, just don't know wether they only work with games loaded onto the card or with extern games as well. Google didn't really help me here. : /

Post preview:Shattered Memories update. The nightmares are cool, though they play a lot like an action game to me. They're not too frightening after a while.

I'm now at the nightmare after Cybil told Harry that he isn't Harry...

I think this is the best story in the Silent Hill series so far.

Quote from Da Dood:
About the Nightmares, they kinda grew on me. At first I thought they were scary, then I thought they were annoying because I could never find my way out, but then I figured that's sort of the whole point.

The beginning of the first nightmare was pretty scary, because of how sudden it happened and how you didn't know anything but that monsters are supposed to come and get you. I was scared because I didn't know when they were supposed to appear.
But when they appeared it was really hilarous. Just running straight-forward while flinging off those things on the run was just too easy.

Too bad that changed quickly with the second nightmare. : / That one was way scarier with monsters not being as easy to throw off and generally being somewhat of a maze. Not to mention the sequence that introduced the nightmare. aiwebs_001

I'll be tackling Midwhich tomorrow. Going to be interesting to see how much they changed there.

Post preview:Bought Shattered Memories on the day I got Estpolis. I played for about 2 hours yesterday and night and really like it so far. The atmosphere is tense enough, even without monsters. The sounds coming from the wiimote when you're closing in on an echo are really disturbing, definitely worse than the good old Silent Hill radio-static.

I've only encountered the first nightmare so far, but that was actually fun. I really liked how the whole scenario was all about reacting with the wiimote&nunchuck, done right it turned really easy. I felt pretty much invincible there.

Can't wait 'till the sun drops tonight so I can go on with the game. The therapist is a pretty cool guy too.

Guess I'll be on my way to Stark Mountain in Platinum now. Sucks I gotta take HM-slaves with me again.

Post preview:Finally got Estpolis (Lufia 2 DS) today. I'm 2 hours into it now and it's pretty awesome so far, basically being a regular action RPG with quite a bit of platforming puzzles, an epic soundtrack and lots of nostalgia for fans of the original game.

The visuals also impressed me. I honestly expected Estpolis to look like shit, being a DS game and all, but it doesn't. Character models aren't very detailed (don't think I've even seen a face yet), but everything else looks good enough for a handheld game. They also made use of the characters being 3D models now, so there's quite a bit more physical interaction between characters compared to the SNES original. Dialoges seem to be taking a rather joking approach in general. Too bad I can't read japanese.

Anyways, I'm going to catch Palkia and Dialga in Platinum now. Good thing they're not using the usual legendary catch rate ...
Uxie and Azelf were a pain in the ass to catch. :|

Speaking of grindfests, I bought Secret of Mana via Virtual Console with my remaining 800 points.

I wasn't overly thrilled by that games, got to some weird forest maze a good while in I think, then realized I really didn't care anymore and stopped playing. It's not a terribly interesting game.

Yeah. I couldn't get into it too, guess it's another overhyped childhood memory game.
