I was just wondering what makes snes9x so good.
I use zsnes and like it but the others use snes9x so I cant watch TASes.

So basically what are the good things about snes9x?

I won't go into the gory detail but the most major points I can think of is that Snes9x is more user friendly, in my experience anyway.  Videos are easier to watch and don't require renaming your files, etc.

As far as why TASers use Snes9x, The main reason would be that it has more tools at the user's disposal such as frame advance, which is a necessity for high quality tool assisted runs.

However, IIRC, Snes9x doesn't emulate glitches correctly, which is worth mentioning.

I like Big Butts and I can not lie
Snes9x has good movie support and a decent frame advance
ZSNES has everything else (more accurate emulation, rewind, macros, decent configuration options, non-choppy slowdown etc.)

google for either snes9x 1.43 v10 or snes9x 1.51. If your just going to play on it take 1.51 but if your going to make movies I think 1.43 is the best.

They're both here

I advise you not to use Snes9x 1.51 under any circumstances if you have ZSNES

I recommend ZSNES, but I can't really tell you why. I just liked it better than Snes9x when I first starting using emus and have stuck with it since.

Does Snes9x have hot keys (where frame advance is)? I can't find it.

I prefer ZSNES, because it just seems to run faster. That, and the key combination editor really helps if you want to short-charge or whatever.

I think I tried zsnes 1st.  The first thing I didn't like about it was the interface.  It has it's own...  Mouse pointer/arrow...  thingy.  :P

Never stressed
I have only two problems with ZSNES, first: using save states is kinda annoying, it really needs hotkeys for that. Second: It has problems when running Fire Emblem 4 with the translation patch.

zsnes does have hotkeys for save states... F2 saves, F3 opens a prompt to select a state and F4 loads. Granted, I just noticed this a couple months ago after using it for a couple years, but it does indeed have them.

under the misc menu, select game keys.

In fact, I just looked again, it appears that it has spots to assign keys to the different states. I will have to mess with that later.  8-)

For playing I much prefer ZSNES, as it's more accurate and has less weird bugs.  The reason the TASes use Snes9x is because ZSNES has historically had iffy movie and savestate support (though in the latest version that's at least somewhat mitigated).

As for hotkeys, don't worry about it.  ZSNES has plenty.  F2 to save, F4 to load, F3 to switch (100 possible savestates per ROM).

But what about hotkeys on Snes9x 1.43? I can't find the option. Unless it's an improvement.

The newest version is Snes9X 1.51. The newest non-desyncing one is Snes9X 1.43 v10

v10 has Reset Record support. 1.51 desyncs movies by interpretating your save-states wrong

Well, ZSNES emulates glitches even worse. The spacetime beam is emulated poorly, and the murder beam is the wrong color. also the murder beam doesn't seem to do as much damage on Kraid on ZSNES as it does on snes9x.

Yeah, I think we can all agree that Snes9x is the more civilized/useful emulator when it comes to things other than simple gameplay and emulation quality.
