Okay, I've recently switched to ZSNES for my Super Metroid emulating needs, and I've been working with the recording feature, but having some problems with it.  The way it seems to work (to me) is that it records the precise timing that the commands are fed to the game, and then when played, reissues those commands to the emulator in the timed sequence, so that it essentially recreates the player's movements from scratch.

My problem is, the things I record seem to eventually fall out of synch with the game on replays.  This does not happen consistantly in the same spots of the game.

For example:  A recent 100% run that I recorded.  It was nothing terribly special, but once I finished it, I sent it to a friend who isn't really well-exposed to Super Metroid speed-running, and while watching the replay, it fell out of synch right after acquiring the Ice Beam (he says that once I got it, and opened the menu to turn it off, it turned off the Spazer, and then Samus proceded to twitch around in the ice beam room like she was having an epileptic seizure, indicating that the commands were being fed off time from the game).

So I watched through the same run to see if it unsynched in the same place, and on my viewing, it desynched during the Kraid fight.

I'm hoping someone else has encountered similar problems and can give me a heads up on what might be wrong, and ways to fix it.  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Different versions of ZSNES cause recordings to go really funky, which would explain what happened when your friend watched, but unless you changed versions of ZSNES between your recording and your watching, I have no idea what happened when you were watching...

Yeah, a bit of the story I left out originally:

On my friend's first viewing it desynched right at the beginning, he updated his ZSNES and viewed again, and it ran fine for a while, so we assumed it was just version differences.  It was on that second viewing that it desynched at the Ice Beam.

And yeah, my version has not changed since the recording.

yes, both the recorder and the viewer must use the same version of zsnes and the same rom. for best results, just zip the whole kit and kaboodle (i can't believe i just said that) up and send it to your friend.

also tell your friend (and yourself) not to have anything else running while the video is trying to play, and do not touch the computer while the video is playing.

and welcome to one of the main reasons why emulated runs were banned.  :D

i like the use of color in the smiley. it's so warm and caring. just like banning emulated runs.

Thanks for the info.  I'm pretty sure (for my own viewing) that ZSNES was the only thing I had running, but it could be that I'm forgetting something.  I'll look into it a bit more.

While I was aware that emulated runs were banned, I wasn't aware that desynching was a major reason for the banning, but it's good to know.  The banning of emulated runs pretty well shot me down regardless though.  I seem to be in the great minority of players who are more capable with use of a keyboard than the SNES controller.

Thanks again.

EDIT:

Something else that just ocurred to me:

Would other things running at the time the run was recorded also make a difference?  I don't know exactly, but I think I was patching World of Warcraft during at least part of the run.
