i had a chance to play sly 2 on PS2 some years ago, after 20 minutes running around without knowing what i should be doing, i just quit and never played the game again...
You're the first person I've talked to who didn't like the sequels better.
In my opinion, Band of Thieves was the best of the series - it had respectable length, it had the best characters and character development, it had clue bottles, etc.
band of theives was pretty cool ... for a while. then it got fairly repetitive and boring. it's a decent game nonetheless, but it's hard to beat the cool fluid platforming in the original. the open world thing made the sequels worse rather than better i thought.
i also didn't like playing as bentley and especially murray and there was a fuckload of that in both 2 and 3. :/
Murray sucked, but Bentley had some cool moves and methods of getting around. Especially in Honor Among Thieves. Grapple Cam!
I dunno, I guess I generally prefer open worlds to separate stages. The first game had cool platforming, but it was kind of unpolished. Not as much of a stealth element, either.
yeah bentley had some cooler stuff in the third game but it was still never as fun as just using sly. both bentley and murray were just more annoying to get around with than anything.
i thought the platforming in the first was extremely polished. one of the best platformers of its time.
I didn't mean to insinuate that the platforming itself was unpolished. The platforming in the first game was more or less as good as in the sequels. But the rest of it was a little like a beta compared to the next two games. The sequels had the platforming plus an open world and better game mechanics. Although I guess those are more a matter of taste depending on the person.
guess i tend to get bored with long games. sly 1 was great because it gave you 15 or so stages to run through and was a lot of fun the whole time. i can understand sucker punch wanting to add more stuff in the sequels but i think the way they went about it made it less fun. maybe playing as just sly in the second would have helped.
I still reckon that Jak 1 has yet to be topped for recent platformers. It's strange that Jak, Ratchet, and Sly all came out at around the same time, as they're all pretty good.
precursor legacy was pretty cool but i actually enjoyed jak ii a lot more. the former reminded me of the old n64 platformers except i didn't like it as much as say banjo or dk64. it felt lifeless and a little boring. the whole huge world with no loads thing was nice though. jak 3 was total garbage.
ratchet 1 was awesome but it seemed like the second two got old really, really fast. up your arsenal was basically the exact same game as going commando.
all this might be because i played all 9 of these games for the first time within the past year ... maybe i'd feel differently about them if i'd played them when i was a teenager.
Turtle's Second Media Theory: The second game in a trilogy is the best of the trilogy. The only currently known exceptions are Metroid Prime and The Matrix.
Jak 2 is my favorite from that series. The difficulty was insane but pretty well-balanced for the most part. Jak 3 was far from garbage, although the vehicle segments drive me crazy. The difficulty which those provide are not well-balanced. Ever.
Going Commando is my favorite from that series. It deepened the gameplay (upgradeable health, weapons, and armor) without ever going into tedium, as Up Your Arsenal sometimes did. The original Ratchet and Clank was good but had many of the same problems with unpolished mechanics as the first Sly.
And Band of Thieves is my favorite from that series, for reasons stated above.
When you also factor in that Crash Bandicoot 2, Spyro 2, and Uncharted 2 were my favorites from their respective series, I'd say you've got a pattern.
seems like video games are different from other entertainment in that sequels usually improve on their predecessors. they're not always better per se but they're almost always something worth playing with a lot of new stuff.
Films are terrible for it. I don't watch THAT many films as it is, but in my experience, I only recall Terminator 2 and Aliens being better than the originals.
speaking of old action series i think rambo is one of the few instances where the second film is my least favorite in the series. iii is just too awesome.
Lol Predator 2 I can live with. Predators on the other hand... well good on first watch, second, third, fourth... Oh dear !, bad movie.
I really like Hot shots part deux that takes the piss out of rambo and movies like Predator.
