Not everyone enjoys reading books though. I actually have more fun playing Solitaire than I do with reading. Different people have different ideas of "fun" and "wasting time". And videos like this are created for one purpose: entertainment. As long as a single person was entertained by the video: Mission Complete. And believe me, there's worse stuff on the internet.

But I will agree though: I feel like I've seen all these clips before ...

That's mostly because writers have very rarely posted in the Arts forum, nate and Ark are pretty much the only ones who've contributed significant written submissions.

And that video was way better than anything you've posted, so there's that.

Also, Ark actually does read a lot. As for me, I try to avoid the forum because it takes so much of my time, so I tend to avoid essays and stuff in here. Nothing personal. I've been meaning to get around to ask for the second part of MIP. Maybe later....

True. My complaining isn't for any personal reason; I'm pretty much basing it off of the fact that so many people completely ignored DMantra's Little Miss Windowhead. I guess I probably should have waited till more people (who weren't M2K2 Staffers or truely annoying people like IUni) that submitted writing got ignored to complain... Excuse me while I go dump a bucket of water on my head and wait another round. Embarassed

It's a reference to Yakety Sax, the music often used on the Benny Hill show in sketches very much like what Ark did with the Sa-X clips. Which was the joke, you see. I point this out because you apparently missed it and failed to realize that it was supposed to be pointless.

Yakety as far as I can tell means nothing.

It's mostly an onomatopoeia, commonly seen before "yak." I first heard the term in the song Yakety Yak by The Coasters. It's generally used to refer to meaningless chattering.

For those that are unfamiliar to the background music, it's called Yakety Sax, and it is often used in outlandishly humorous situations, most often involving some kind of chase. It's because of the nature of this musical piece that this video came to be in the first place, so it's understandable that one not recognizing it may not regard the video quite as highly as others.

It's entirely possible to be a voracious reader and yet have no interest in reading fanfic or amateurish creative writing, let alone in critiquing it. Also, there isn't actually any obligation on the part of any visitor to this particular board to read and reply to any post.

Disclaimer, before you get upset: I haven't read any of the writing in this forum, and thus the statement above is not aimed at or intended to describe the work of any particular person. I'm just saying that when you have only so much time to read you tend to be picky about what you read, and there just isn't incentive to spend more time reading less polished prose that may never go anywhere anyway. For me, if the language use is poor, the content is all but irrelevant because of the time it takes to untangle it. This doesn't just apply to creative writing, either.

It would be nice if they did... Comments and criticisms are what keep writers going. Like you said, it's not required, but if someone likes the writing, then it's only polite.

It's not polite to provide criticism, just helpful. There's nothing impolite about reading a user's creative piece without responding the the thread.

Right, but that's the thing... critiquing is work, and can be very time-consuming. To take the example of writing (as opposed to drawing, say), if the language skills are problematic, then all those little corrections take time to indicate, especially in a setting like this (as opposed to revision marks in a word processor), yet just stating the problem (e.g., "Make your verb tenses consistent") may not be very helpful if the writer doesn't realize what makes it a problem. If one needs to spend a lot of time doing all that, the content itself is totally obscured. It's also just plain painful to read, past a certain point.

On the other hand, if the writing is decent, one can then actually read the content. And depending on the type of content, this can take as long or longer to critique, since it's more subjective. (This is particularly true in the case of fanfic, where the reader probably has more or less the same background knowledge as the writer, but may have a very different viewpoint and find the writer's version implausible or simply entirely disagree.) It also can be hard to articulate what doesn't sound right about a particular passage. So again, it's work.

All of that often adds up to more than one has the time and energy to do. It depends on the reader, of course; I used to critique Saber's drawings here and could do that reasonably quickly. It also engaged me because it's something I enjoy doing and learning from myself. On the other hand, I proofread and edit as part of my job, and I don't easily ratchet down to the level of interaction reasonable for posted fiction on a messageboard. I can't, in conscience, just say "I like it" and/or "I don't like it", but expanding on either of those takes a lot of thought and time -- and that's assuming I want to read it to begin with. As I have implied, I don't like fanfic.

That's all bypassing any ego issues the writer may have. Getting something you worked hard on and like critiqued can hurt. I've been involved in more than one situation where an artist insisted that s/he wanted honest, real critique but then threw a tantrum when actually receiving it when it wasn't 100% positive. Those can be pretty nasty, and it's no surprise that some opt for the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" mode of feedback. The reason I could give Saber helpful feedback is because he could take it, so I could get to the point immediately. Having to weigh every word to attempt to keep it from being taken personally instead of constructively -- as I have done with these two posts -- takes as much time and effort as the critique itself.
