Worth investing in a classic controller?

I have downloaded this game today off the Virtual Console.
I am using a Gamecube controller. I'm not sure if its the controller or the fact I haven't played for a few years.
Anyone else played this using the GC controler? Did you find it hard?
I think its just the fact that shoot feels so far away, playing the game doesn't seem as smooth as I remember. Maybe I will get used to it, I'm just curious if anyone has gone throught the whole game with this controller and not had problems.

Well, all of the VC games I play are done so using the classic controller, and even a number of the recent games, like Punch-Out!!, I've been playing with the classic controller.

It depends on how serious you wish to take them. If you just want to mess about, and relive the memories, then don't bother, but if you really want to play them properly, as you used to, then I'd imagine it'd be hard to NOT buy one eventually. I actually own two.

EDIT: Just had a thought. I reckon it'd be great if they released an official adapter that allowed you to connect your official NES / SNES / N64 controllers to your Wii to play all of the VC games.

If they added the adapter then Nintendo would make less money on the controllers so I can't see it happening lol.
I'm not sure how many games I'm gonna download, I've had the mario bros series but thats just run and jump, you can use the wiimote for that. I've also played paper mario 64.

It's just this game seems a little awkward at the moment. It's a bit of both playing this. I wanna relive the memories before I buy the trilogy to get me back into this. But I also want to try and find every upgrade because I don't think I've done it before. I know as a kid playing this game I didn't get the grapple beam! I would like to explore everything.

If you never found Grapple, then you can't have played that much of the game, as it would be very, very unlikely you'd figure out charging a Shinespark, jumping up some platforms, and Sparking across the Missile Lake. Very Happy

And I won't even suggest a diagonal Bomb-jump. Wink

It is possible to finish the game without it though isn't it? I know I have finished the game for sure. I remember laughing at mother brains head when you shoot it.
I'm trying to remember all the grapple spots this time round, It's hard enough remembering all the different areas that need different methods of getting in. But I am determained to get everywhere.

As I've said I just started the game again today, not too far in, just collect the ice beam and spazer and my first 2 lots of power bombs before my last save.

I don't know what that shinespark is lol. The first time I had played the game I didn't even know you could do all them shields and special attacks, I was amazed when I found that out. I'm looking forward to finding out how to do them all again.

Yes, you can finish the game without the grapple. But it's simply impossible if you didn't know what shinespark or diagonal-bomb jump was.

I have both the classic controller and the GCN controller. When it come to playing the game on VC, I choose the GCN controller. The biggest drawback is of course the joystick, D-pads are way better especially when it comes to morph. I much prefer to play Super on emu with joypad.

The classic controller never felt right in my hand.

Yes the joystick is a bit of an issue in this game. Sometimes the slightest touch in a direction can affect Samus. It's annoying sometimes while jumping or trying to stay in the morphball.

Edit: That joystick issue made me die 3 times. I got the x-ray scope the hard way without grapple beam and died on the way back, The last time I had 4 health left and accidently gently flicked the stick back and I walked onto the spike from a block :(

I didnt even think about the D-pad, never used it before on my wii lol. It certainly made the wall jump easier but I couldn't use it all the time.
This game doesn't seem as long as it used to, Don't seem to have been playing long and I have a lot of the upgrades now (including the grapple).
As for the mentioned shinespark I have done it before, I just didn't realise thats what it was called lol.

If your playing on SNES you need the classic controller obviously. For emulators I prefer keyboard, a PS2 controller would be interesting though. For Wii I believe I would use the controller, not sure on the name of it though.

i use a classic controller but don't really like it— the d-pad is quite terrible, especially for super metroid. it constantly registers down-right if i'm just trying to run right or down-left if left. besides the tightening needed there though, it's a pretty nice controller.

I have the classic controller and I don't really notice any problems with the D-Pad. I'm able to pull off most of the ridiculous tricks just fine (then again, I'm pretty exact with my directions when pressing.) On the other hand, the GC's D-Pad is kind of pointless. I simply can not enjoy using such a tiny thing.

Its funny, I always liked the D-pad until I got an emulator and started using my Xbox360 controller, now I can't stand the D-pad...I even fumble with my DS's D-pad as well....
I suggest just using your GC controller.

Surely the D-pad argument is only valid if you've used one that's decent and comfortable to play your emulator with. If you used a decent one, then you probably wouldn't feel that way. I've been playing with my PSX controller for god knows how many years, and have never had issue with it.

EDIT: Ok, so looking through the company's site I can't seem to actually find one for sale, but the same article links to another story about RetroZone adapters that are about $16 a pop.

I think it is more a matter of personal preference at this point.
I just really like the joystick over the D-pad now. It is what it is.
BTW I have used legitimate controllers for my emulator. (I had one EXACTLY like a PSX controller and the D-pad was spot on)

I agree with you there, copycats just can't beat the authentic original. (and the d-pads on them usually are horrid)

You should be able to get a triwing fairly cheap at a tool shop / hardware store / whateveryoucallit.
