yeah, it is a given motion controls will be better next gen. that was the case with control sticks just looking at the improvement between the N64 and GC sticks.
also, games with minimal motion stuff are usually better. i found SMG1 and 2 and NSMBW to be alright with the little motions they had. sure, those actions could be mapped to a button but they're so simple that motions work alright.

Really?  I was thinking the opposite.  The Wii DOES have some good games, but about 90% of it is casual gamer shovelware crap.

Try telling that to the millions of tards who get together and play all that shit, calling themselves 'gamers'.

there being trash games doesn't make the great games any less great.

i don't recall people calling the DS or PS2 libraries shit because there were tons of crappy games.

True.  I think only when the number of great games is lacking do people start bitching about the overwhelming numbers of shitty ones.

tards are not counted, as they are not real gamers....
it would be like if we say that everyone that watch any movies are movie fans...

Fun fact: people who call themselves "gamers" are, in fact, "tards" no matter what games they like.

Guess that makes me a tard then.  In my circles, there are some who play and some who just don't.  We kinda need a word to distinguish us and that's what we use.  Got a better one?

Yeah, I was gonna say that using that definition more or less puts a lot of us here under that label if I had to guess. I know I consider myself a gamer, but I don't care either way what anyone says since it's something I enjoy doing and part of who I am. If that makes me a "tard" in anyone's eyes, so be it.

Servin' you realness!!
I always list 'video games' as one of my hobbies.  I don't go around wearing an 'I'm a gamer!' tee shirt or anything.
It's so funny how clear the distinction is between those who play and whose who don't.  Those who don't seem to be completely flabbergasted by even the concept of the games. They seem absolutely amazed at the controls, and wonder how on earth someone can remember what all the buttons do.  I try to explain that it's like typing: after some practice, your brain just remembers the layout/function and it just happens automatically. A lot of them think video games are still like space invaders and pac-man, since that was the last time any of them played any.  I try to explain to them that games aren't really like that anymore, that they have epic stories, a beginning, conflict, and resolution - as well as developed characters.  I was trying to explain it to this one girl who just sat there and looked at me like I was insane.  It started when I told her that one of my games takes me about 10 hours to complete, to which she said: "How can you just sit there and do something over and over for ten hours?"  I told her that some games even have parts that make me cry and I thought she was going to puke.  Bitch Cunt. She's totally into football, so go figure.

gaming still has a long way to go before it is accepted like movies and any other hobby. that close minded perception doesn't go away in a decade.

i think the word "gamer" has too many negative connotations as of today and i wouldn't call myself like that anytime soon. i have a friend that does that and he sounds like a complete dumbass. when people ask me about what i like, i include gaming the same way i do anything else like "i like watching movies, i like playing games, i like computer stuff, i like to eat seafood, etc."
i wouldn't call myself a seafood eater just because i like that kind of food or a movie watcher just because i watch movies once in a while or an anime watcher because i watch some anime weekly.

This guy gets it. It seems incredibly odd to me that one would define themselves entirely by a singular hobby or interest. It's not like it's a profession or something you do to live, it's a thing done when there's nothing getting in the way. Maybe it's something we'd like to do almost exclusively for eternity, but that's about it.

It sort of strikes me as some kind of weird attempt at making time sunk into games seem almost justified. Shit, I actually pretty much just play video games but I'd never call myself a 'gamer' even just in my head because I'd feel like a tool.

There's not a distinction between those who eat seafood and those who don't, or those who watch movies and those who don't, where one of them 'gets it' and the other one doesn't.  For that reason, I can't really endorse that comparison/analogy.

How is there not a distinction between those things? People who play games don't 'get' games any more than people who don't, some like it some don't. Some like seafood some don't, some like movies some don't. There are people that spend incredible amounts of time watching movies but they don't call themselves "movie-ers" (Or if they did it's sound just as stupid as "gamer" so whatever.) and there's far more to 'get' in cinema than in video games.

Are people who call themselves "sports-man" "tards" no matter what sports they are performing?

I think that you are personally pissed off by wannabe proud people just following some unimportant things/skills in life and self-acclaimed freaks.
I perfectly understand that but I don't think that the original meaning of "gamer" is meant to describe those people. I think it makes more sense to use the word in order to differ between people who are dedicating time to play games and those who don't.

Because everybody understands what seafood and movies are, regardless of whether or not they like them.  People I know who never play video games are completely ignorant about what they are.

I'd be pretty surprised to meet someone in their 20s-30s these days that doesn't know what a Mario is. Actually, a lot of video games are advertised on tv now, during popular shows even, complete ignorance would be incredibly difficult anyway unless they don't watch tv or use the internet or even just walk by the arcade machines that seem to be in every movie theater ever.

If it doesn't interest them then it doesn't interest them, it's not something to 'get'. Maybe back in the 80s and early 90s it was, but video games are pretty well accepted in the mainstream these days. I imagine that more people play them in some form or another than don't play them at all. Even if it's just things like Bejeweled or whatever Facebook game is popular at the moment.

It's a little man that jumps on mushroom monsters and wing-ed turtles, dives down very large pipes and eats mushrooms to get huge in order to save the Princess from a giant fire breathing turtle king.

Wait, no, that sounds retarded that can't be right.

I think here is no basis to call someone a "tard" just because he made gaming a hobby and therefore calls himsel a "gamer". Being sportive is widely accepted, but most people don't do regular sports. Everyone walks or drives bicycle from time to time. But as you know it doesn't make you sportive. You don't have to exxagerate but you have to do sports on a regular basis to become sportive. So there is nothing wrong calling oneself a "gamer" just to stress that you are dedicating time to it on purpose.

problem is that most people who call themselves "gamers" are usually ignorant to a lot of stuff within games and the industry. that's like someone who rides bycicle once a week calling himself a sportsman. doesn't help that most of these "gamers" are probably the worst people to represent the word and are the current stereotype.

as i said earlier, gaming still has a long way to go to be in the same footing as movies, music and other forms of entertainment.

When you use the 'sportsman' analogy, it makes me think of the subject as a profession.  Just as there are many sports fans, there are few athletes.  Hell, most sports fans are way outta shape, but they love sports and athletic feats.
Of course, 'gamer' wouldn't/couldn't/shouldn't come to mean gaming as a profession.  It's a hobby, and I don't know how one would rank someone to qualify as identifying as a gamer.  I think if you enjoy playing video games for entertainment, then you are a gamer.  *insert tired 'hardcore' distinctions here*

there doesn't seem to be a middleground between all the kinds of gamers that exist now in the eyes of people who don't play games so poeple use the word in a very broad way usually. people who play games for a living are labeled as gamers just as someone who plays casually 2-3 times per week. we need some better words for that kind of gamers. "casual/hardcore" distinctions have become a clusterfuck so those words are kinda out of the question for now.
