I managed to pull off the glitch to jump through the ceiling to get springball without grapple on Wii virtual console. Mind you, I did have the gravity suit, but wouldn't it be possible to do the same thing in a NBMB run?

Time bomb set get out fast!
I've performed that glitch without gravity; it does work.  Alas, the issue with spring ball is much nastier.  You can get close enough to see it, and only then realize your horrible mistake.

Basically, need to bomb-jump to get to the Springball.  You can't bomb-jump underwater without the Gravity Suit, which you can't get without beating a boss.  Thus, getting the Springball is impossible.

IIRC, it's possible to get Gravity without beating Phantoon, but you need to X-Ray climb.  I think Saturn figured this out.

Nope.  The Gravity Suit acquired by that method only allows you to skip the looong statue walking part, not Phantoon.  Phantoon still has to be defeated.  Basically, the Gravity Suit room (like all of the rooms in the Wrecked Ship) has two states.  In the first state, the Suit does not exist - the room is empty.  You have to beat Phantoon to change all of the rooms to their second state, making the Suit appear.  Saturn's technique means that you can beat Phantoon to change the room state, travel through the Wrecked Ship as normal, and then skip the statue part by glitching through the wall.
