...yeah, I tend to do that from time to time. I've got to stop assuming things.

I'm going to avoid getting caught up any further in this argument, cause I know I'm going to get beaten around the face with an argument that's better than mine. So I'll leave with this:

Metroid Fusion is more story based, which is why you're being funnelled around with no sequence breaking, if you broke the sequence the story wouldn't make sense. The one time you can actually sequence break, they catch you out and then tell you to turn back and go pick up the next item.

I don't care if I've mis-interpreted you again, Toozin, but this'll just keep going on and on and I'm getting away whilst I still can.

I don't even notice the linearity in Fusion because I play it just like all the other games.  So the route has been decided for me, big deal.  It's still ONE route that I'm going to go along over and over just like in Super and ZM.  The only thing missing was the experimentation in finding the route.  It's still a huge route and there is plenty of backtracking which is as metroidy as it gets.

it's way too hard to call anything "sequence breaking" or an attempt at sequence breaking in this game. is skipping a missile tank really a sequence break? is getting a useless powerbomb early really a sequence break? pretty much everything you can do results in getting nothing in return. still a great game though. >_>

I havn't played it in a long while but i seem to remember liking the game especially for its atmosphere. Definatly the scariest metroid game with super metroid and metroid 2 taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively for creepyness. The graphics are brilliant, bright, clear and detailed (similar to super) and so is the sound. The designers done a great job on making you feel isolated on a research station even though you explore its depth to where it resembles a planet. Your still totally aware your on a station and you feel your being watched all the time by Samus x. Definatly a decent challenge and very epic towards the end. Play this game with headphones on and you get seriously immersed.

But i've no intention to speed run this game though.

Fusion could benefit from a brightness reduction (sweeping or selective) what with the modern things it'd be played on all being lit.  C'mon, Virtual Handheld, make it happen (along with Japanese Fusion extras and the missile block fix for ZM)!

Fusion was definitely NOT a strong point in the series. It's a good game, just not a good Metroid game. It's not as fun when you're funneled towards your objective. I mean what's a Metroid game without sequence breaking?

Metroid 2, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid Prime Hunters, and, if you want to get super picky with terminology, Metroid Prime.

Sequence breaking is not the whole of the series and the lack of it is not why Fusion isn't so good. You are bad at arguing things.

OK, so I probably should've said "free roaming" instead of "sequence breaking." you don't get as much opportunity to explore as in the other games. That's my problem with fusion.

Whether your path is blocked by a super missile or PB door, or whether it's blocked by adam, I don't see a huge difference.  They could have made the game just as unbreakable using traditional blockages.  True that there is no real sequence breaking, but your path is not totally linear.  There's plenty of opportunity to explore, especially if you use the hidden passages between sectors.

yeah, but you can only enter most of them once you've collected screw attack, and that's at the end of the game.

As expressed otherwise, it's picking around, finding the obstacle, throwing yourself at it, picking around elsewhere to find something to use, throw that against it, and repeat until you get past (or find another way around).  In Fusion, you're simply told "No." with a veritable God-door that you know you can't open. No troubleshooting. No workarounds. You simply move on to the objective given you.  While this works from Samus's "bounty hunter" shtick, it feels, yeah, "funneled", like you're trudging a path with some shocks (SA-X) thrown in.

...Does that make Fusion an on-rails platformer?

hah, i dunno. there are plenty of other very linear platformers; it's just unusual in the metroid series.

A power bomb door or a super missile door or even a morph ball tunnel all basically tell you 'NO' as well.  There are SOME instances where people have found a way around them, but it's not a given.

But when you find that bomb block, it's because YOU found that bomb block, not because Deus Ex Malchovitch says "ok this is the only possible place you can go."

But there isn't always a bomb block there.  There are plenty of places in non-fusion games where there is NO WAY around the obstacle until you get a certain item or complete a certain task.  Nobody complains about those.

Right, because it's a matter of presentation. It's about the feeling. If you get bottlenecked in SM (which is sorta rare in the first place), it's because you, personally, have exhausted all other options. And when you get passed your obsticle, it's because you, personally, found out how.

In Fusion you're bottlenecked from the start. You don't even get the chance to try other options because there are none. Adam says "get this and go here," and you obey. But maybe you missed something in PYR? "No," says Adam, "I locked that door you can't do shit in PYR go where I tell you goddamit."

Fuck you Adam, I wanna double check PYR.

So, if Adam didn't tell you specifically where to go for your objectives (There's a download for Ice Missiles in PYR go get them), and left other sections open you had previously been too it would have been better?

Hard to say for sure, but probably. I'd definately be curious to play an Adam-less hack if such a thing is possible.

you guys who go "it's not metroid if there's no sequence breaking" what would it be you didn't have the internet to find out what sequence breaking was? it'd be a METROID game.

fusion is a Metroid Game.

Actually, that sounds really ****ing fun to me too.

The only progress blocks being PB-X, SM-X, M-X, and the color coded doors.

The only real problem is, even if you found sequence breaks they would do nothing. There's that one where someone fights the Plasma X early and instead of giving the Plasma Beam is "unlocks Green Doors". So such a 'hack' would only be useful for getting certain expansions early(er).

Where am I?
For me, I don't talk bad about Fusion, although it is my least favorite 2-d metroid (dunno why, but I hate 3-d metroid.) Reasons for this would probably be these 2: 1.No single wall walljumping, imo, that's just bs. 2.Linearity, I don't like being told what to do in real life, and it just frustrates me further when I'm playing a game.

All in all, Fusion is a pretty good game, could have been a lot better if they sacrificed the storyline imo.

It's less about finding stuff early and more about being allowed to find stuff by myself. So yeah, if anyone ever makes that it'd probably be the first ever hack I play. I'd be very curious to see how much my opinion alters.

Also, trolltank, you are an idiot.
