Since the regular SNES controller's control pad is too wobbly to wall jump with, I was wondering: What is the best SNES controller to buy? Would it be the one with the PS1 controller's design or is there a better one? Any help would be great. Thanks!
I know some people like wobbly controllers and find it easier to wall jump with them, but personally I think the original SNES controller sucks donkey balls (sorry for stealing your line, Yoshi). I need a control pad like the DS and SP ones so I don't accidentally press diagonally every single time I wall jump.
Have you considered.... (there I say it...) Modifying your controller?
Take the N64 controller for instance. I bought that system solely for KI Gold. I too had the problem of diagonals getting in the way. Then one day I cut some plastic from a tupperware like container (it's thickness was probably .2 mm thick) into a diamond shape, it also had a round hole in the center. I hot-glued it to the D-Pad. It helped quite a bit, but wasn't perfect. I may have made something else for it - but I can't remember.
As for my old Master System controller... Playing a game like 'Alien Syndrome' I could never get passed the 4th level. Until one day I took the controller apart, removed the D-Pad and sawed off the corners so that I'd have an actual '+' shape. Afterwards I was able to beat 'Alien Syndrome'. 8-)
*toot toot -on own horn*
So, at first you could consider adding something to it, but as a last resort would I start performing plastic surgery. :)
Another thing. Have you ever taken the screws out from the back/bottom and opened it up and looked at the circuit board? If you never have - you may be surprised at how much 'crud' is in there.

Could you post a pic of your N64 controller with the plastic on it (so I know how to do it with my SNES controller)?
I'm sorry. I can't. I sold it (the N64) to my Oldest Sister so many Christmases ago so she could give it to her son (my nephew) for that said Christmas.
I may be able to make something up with my PS pad. I'll most likely post pics in this (edited) post.
Edit: Here's the pic. Again, it's not on an N64 controller. It's my PS(1)... Although I haven't tried it to see how it works... This is pretty much exactly how it was.
I can't say for sure. Come to think of it... I may have had trouble doing 1/4 and 1/2 circles for some of the moves in KI-Gold. Thus, this modification would increase the diagonal movements. :( This was probably over 6 years ago.
Another thing you could try... If you have a hot glue gun is put some small beads on the points of the directions on the D-pad or the '+' part. These will make the up, down, left, and right directions more defined when pressing those directions.
That's just a suggestion. But not having your controller here with me - it's hard to say exactly what to do.
Is it so old and worn that it's smoothed down from it's former - glorious self? Maybe you could post a pic of it from a southwesterly perspective to give us a better idea of it's condition. That is - if it IS in a bad condition. If NOT, then it may not be worth the trouble.
I would post a pic, but I don't have a digital camera. I've only had the SNES for a year, so I don't know if it's in bad condition or not. All I know is, I can't speedrun Super Metroid because diagonals get it the way almost every time I turn around.
It's possible that the D-Pad is too small for your thumb. Having a larger surface on it (like what I made for my PS controller) could reduce the chances of that happening.
Or, as I suggested before, if you could put some beads of glue from a (High Temp) Glue-gun - that could make the 4 directions easier to press. One thing you may like about this is the tactile feel that it has... i.e. a Good grip. Or you may find they get in the way.
I am curious though... Have you tried either of my suggestions yet?
To finally answer your question: I don't know of any 'specific' brand or type of SNES controller that would be better. Simply because I'm pretty sure they were all made the same. If you've used one - you've used them all.
At this point I'd suggest buying a new (3rd party) controller. The old one you have now may simply be worn out.
If it is indeed "wobbly" as you say - a brand new one may have a tighter feel to it.

I'm not sure if "wobbly" is the right word. I mean, it doesn't seem like it's about to come out any second, but I guess it is a bit loose. The up direction, in particular (which is usually the diagonal I accidentally press) seems to be looser than any of the other directions. I still don't know if it's supposed to be like that or if it's just really old. I did look at the superpad controller on Amazon, and they did say its control pad is a bit harder to move, which might be what I'm looking for. Could someone please clear this up for me?
Edit: Still waiting for a reply... I hate being ignored...
