so kip, trebor, a few others, and i have been talking a lot recently about trying to solve 21%. our main focus has been skipping varia suit under low% conditions - the only obstacle currently preventing that is the first trip to phendrana, unless we're forgetting something. one idea we came up with was to somehow get wave before going to phen. that would open up an alternate magmoor path to phendrana with few heated rooms to worry about. the obvious way to possibly get wave was to pick up wavebuster and see if that did anything. it was highly unlikely, but it seemed worth checking out.
even though i knew that ice spreader without ice has been achieved via flickerball, i wanted to try this anyway, in case not having charge beam made a difference. during my attempts i became aware of people from scu getting tower of light (where w.buster resides) to load with wave beam, but not without. so i don't think this has been done before, but i might be wrong.
below are the videos of my exploits, recorded with my tiny video recorder. i apologize in advance for the sporadic .mov vids, crap quality, and almost total lack of sound. hopefully they're entertaining:
this is just traveling to tol access. easy stuff:

getting tol to "secretize" is tougher than it looks. this vid's from before i knew what secret rooms were; tol is secretized in this vid, as i can lock onto enemies. it was much harder to reproduce this later:

tol is apparently a legendary bitch to load. this is why afaik people thought you needed wave here. as it turns out, you don't, but it took me a long time to finally get tol to pop into visible existence. i tried strafing off the top of the door (the usual method to load a room), banging samus's head into the bottom of the door (that works too for most other rooms), and everything else i could think of. finally, i jumped randomly from the top of the door, straight up, and tol appeared. i don't have a vid of this because of how sudden it happened, but here's immediately after:
http://samuel.arkarian.org/wavebuster_before_wave/tol_no_wave.mov
next i waited for an hour while samus floated to the top of tol. once there, i ibj'd a bit to get to the center of the ceiling. here's just some of that - it was a pain to unmorph and stay unmorphed, as the invisible walls liked to push me back into a ball.

turns out the ceiling is entirely solid. i'm hoping to find a clipping glitch:

more fiddling around:
http://samuel.arkarian.org/wavebuster_before_wave/tol_top_2.avi
finally, i drop into tol:

i miss the dash. to be fair, i had never climbed tol in this manner before, so after quite a bit of practice i finally made it up to wavebuster:

... and it does nothing. oh well!
