yeah, once you put it in, you won't be getting it back out for a while. used the method here (separating the card, using pliers to pull out the memory card board and then smashing the plastic case to get it out). had some minor damage to the card harness inside the slot but putting a nintendo memory card in and taking it out a few times seemed to bend the affected pin back into place. the slot still reads cards fine but i figured i'd better warn everyone here to save y'all the hassle. can sand down the mouth of the card as shown further down that page if you still want to use various third party cards with your wii.

That's odd. I've put the normal Nintendo GC memory cards and some non-Nintendo Wii SD cards into the system and could easlily take both of them out afterwards. Maybe I'm just lucky?

Either way, that's definitely not something good to hear. It's good to know that you seem to have "solved" this issue with your own Wii though, at least temporarily.

Well then, that explains why I didn't have any issues with it.

Edit: Did that always say gamecube in the topic's title, or was that added? If it was there, I blaim the fact that I was away from home for nearly 12 hours today due to college as my reason for misreading it.

i still wonder who in their senses would use a 3rd party card for their main save files for so long.
the 1019 official card is a really good solution to banish 3rd party cards to hell.

I've never had any problem whatsoever with my 3rd party GCN memory card. With neither the Gamecube nor the Wii.

DAMMIT!

I have only one Nintendo memory card: the original 59 block one, but I have two 59 block Intec cards, and one Nyko 59, and one 1019 block MadCatz.

Are any usable with the Wii besides the Nintendo one, or do I have to buy some new cards?

check the shape of the mouth of the card (where the contacts actually are). if it matches a nintendo card then it's probably safe.

I think I'll be filing the opening, even though they all look the same.  When I do find a Wii in a store, I don't want to have it for a day, then not have it for a few weeks while Nintendo is sending me a new one.

My third party memory card has worked fine, although I've not tried to take it out, and don't intend to any time soon.

Because they're a lot cheaper.

All but one of the memory cards I own are third-party. (three playstation ones, four gamecube ones) None have ever failed me.

I eagerly await the day a third-party memory card dares act up in my presence!

List of makers, for the record:
Playstation: all three by Thrustmaster.
Gamecube: one by Nintendo, one by InterAct, one by Datel (Action Replay), one by Mad Catz.

Controllers, on the other hand, I've had pretty bad luck with. Too bad this thread isn't about them!

Meh, I never trust any unlicensed (aka pelican, mad catz, etc) accessories--ESPECIALLY controlers

But thanks for the heads up. Hopefully I'll have a Wii by next year :D

the madcatz GCN micro would be awesome if it didn't have a retarded Z button.

Metroid Prime, what else?
oh yeah my brother's third party memory card wasnt stuck in our wii, but the data became corrupted [sooo much great SSBM snapshots!] (because the contact was unstable and it was probably lost when some data was being written on the card). i had to format it. (it was a madcatz 1019)

hopefully ive got my true-nintendo 59 bloc card with my metroid data inside :p

I agree on the controllers part. The turbo conroller especially sucks for Hot Pursuit 2.

I have a MadCatz micro-controller and memory card (for not-so-major saves), they still work well after five years.

Most of the accessories I own are first-party anyway.
