I don't know how old this is, but you can TBJ in this game. I don't know how useful this'd be though.

Well, could be useful for a longer bomb-jump. Mean more sequence breaks.

Wait... what? o.o This could be VERY useful in speed runs. Could you please elaborate on how to TBJ in this game? The concept escapes me...

It's not exactly the easiest thing to do, and probably doesn't get you much more height than a DBJBoost but I'll try to explain because I don't have the game anymore.

Basically, waste a bomb. IIRC, you lay one bomb BEFORE the bomb you wasted explodes. Lay the next two bombs as you regularly would. When the bomb on the ground explodes and shoots you upwards you lay the next bomb like, 2/5 of the way up (possibly 1/2 the way up if you can slow it against a wall) then when the bomb at the top sends you up again for a DBJ, lay the next bomb 2/5ths of the way up from where the bomb that just blew you up was. You should do a TBJ.

Epic TBJ diagram:

It will never be as good as the original. I actually remember back when banks17 busted out the TBJ diagram.

This is actually pretty old.  I stumbled upon a YouTube video of a MPH TBJ about three years ago but was never able to pull it off.  There may be a few new SBs and SWs we could find with this though.

About how much higher is the TBJ than a DBJB? High enough to make a difference?

It's higher than a DBJB but it's probably not that much higher really.

If you have a good enough system you can try to do it on an emulator.

Do you know any glitches specifically for saving time in a speed run?

um
well i never thought about speedruns at all while playing MPH. I know you can use the triple bomb jump and missle/magmaul bouncing to skip a lot of places.
Whenever you get to the room where you find the battlehammer in VDO, you can push yourself through the wall with missles and go underneath the floor to get it, without having to scan all the little switches on the wall. that might save time. Someday i'll make a video, because a lot of this stuff is too hard to explain just using words :(

that is a VERY old web site me and a few of my friends made back when MPH was active. This is to just kinda show the glitch database and stuff. It includes mulitplayer glitches (and even how to find your own) and ''%'' glitches. The page i put a link to is just to the main multiplayer glitch thread. It's just to show how massive the database would've been if i would've kept working on it lol. I stopped because i thought no one would ever see it. In the % glitch threads, just note that we just quit working on that and theres tons more of those :(

Eh, I don't know if "missile digging" would be faster than just scanning the things on the wall. It WOULD be useful in a low% run, though, since it's less scans to go on record to lower the percentage. Are there areas where the triple bomb jump can skip sequences/rooms/etc. that the double bomb jump boost can't? If you could record some of these it'd be great, and I'd be sure to give you credit in any future runs I did on the game. :)

I think it might be a little faster actually. If you did it on first try, you wouldnt have to scan OR watch the little cutscene that shows the battlehammer platform coming up to where you can get it normally. It definately saves real time(just tested it), same thing with game time if cutscenes/reading scans is counted too.
Whenever i used to find glitches, i never thought about speedruns or anything, so im going to have to relook over them/find more lol. Someday i just might try an emulator to record some.
edit: my computer isnt good enough to run this game at full speed :( its SUPER laggy

In that case do you think it'd be possible to explain how to do some of these glitches (like the missile digging one) just in text, or do they really require a visual demonstration to understand? Either way I figure anything would help. How exactly do you go underground using missiles? o.O

ok...im going to try and explain it.
You roll into the room that the battlehammer is in.
stand right where the green battlehammer barrier appears behind you.
Face towards the brain-looking thing inside the glass tube.
if you look to your right, there should be a thing sticking out of the wall, and if you can it, it will say "spectral lock 1".
Now, walk into the corner (or where it touches the wall) of this thing, closest to the green barrier.
Turn around and face the green barrier....put your crosshair on the green barrier.
Aim to the right just slightly, and then look down towards the ground  some, just as you would doing the Combat Hall glitches.
Switch to missles, charge one up, and fire it at the ground while backing up against the corner.
If done right, you should be pushed through the wall.
After you get through, use a midair jump to get to the little platform the battlehammer is on. If you don't, you'll fall and die.
Once you get it, you'll be under the room, where the pink stuff is. Just note that you'll fall straight through the pink stuff
Just jump to get back into the normal part of the room.
Thats it :D once you shoot the green barrier and leave the room, you've successfully skipped the scans and the cutscene :)(if you did it first try, it saves time)

If you can't push yourself through the wall, just keep messing with it. you'll get it eventually :)

I tried it at least 20 times and couldn't figure it out. I'm pretty sure cutscenes don't add to the game's timer (I have yet to test it but based on non-recorded test runs watching cutscenes would never affect the timer), and the amount of time it would take to perform that accurately is probably about the same as scanning the four switches in the room. Even if it saved time, it'd probably be 5-10 seconds max. If I ever figure out how to do it consistently and accurately, then I'll use it in future runs and credit you, but otherwise it's complicated. x_x

Are there any other sequence breaks/glitches you can remember that would be helpful in a speed run? I realize most of the things you found were for multiplayer but if you have some kind of new methods for finding glitches that would be easily applicable in most areas of the game that could definitely help.

Regardless of the answer, I feel that MPH has pretty much lost most of its support from both the single player and multiplayer perspectives. I'm sure there are a few out there still following Metroid speed runs hoping for a new one for any of the games at this point, but after going through many failed Single Segment runs over the past two weeks I think I've finally lost my touch, as I wasn't able to break 1:35 SS when I used to be able to consistently break 1:30. A segmented run test resulted in 1:23, which is 7 minutes slower than my last recorded run. ._.

Lol, i felt this way when my DS pad startin wearin down for ZM runs and stuff.
anyways..
if you perform it perfectly, it definitely saves time. especially real time. (plus, you look cooler doing it :p)  There is more stuff i have found, but in dont know how much of it relates to saving time. Instead of working on my ZM hack or whatever tomorrow, i'll just spend time going back over stuff.
There is one thing tho...EXTREMELY hard to do tho...I'd have to record it to explain. Out of trying it like 100 times, i've only been able to do it 1 or 2 times perfectly on my first try 0.0
You can get the first artifact in VDO without killing the enemies or getting the key in the botttom, icy part of the room where the elevator comes up down after you get it. You can just go right through the shield covering the artifact. I'm looking into recording stuff, so hopefully that works out. Plus, i have a friend's DS, which is good :)

Uh, do you know if the Shock Coil is normally required to complete the game? I cant think of any spots in the game where you have to have it. (barriers/ whatever?)

Regarding that trick for VDO, let me know if you figure out a consistent way to do it. I'm interested now. :) I've given up on the scan skip for the battlehammer, though.

As for the Shock Coil, I'm pretty sure you need it to open certain doors in Celestial Archives and possibly other maps/areas. Why?

If you can do your trick on an emulator and record it, I can get it set up to be included on the site.
