I think Helga is in trouble though - 3 Sectoids are pretty nasty to face at once especially with only 20 time units.
Good idea when storming through a UFO's entrance is to wait outside until the next turn when you're at full time units before charging in. It might help you avoid situations like the one above where you can only step in and can't react to what might be on the other side.
There is a chance an alien will come out the door though as you wait for the next turn, so just be aware of that as well. This could mean that it shoots at whomever is right outside or you get reaction fire against it, which might not always be the best thing if you have someone using something that has explosive rounds in it like a rocket launcher.

This is very good advice and you should always do this, but also remember that the first person to go through a door is pretty much fucked no matter what. Using that image as an example even at full TUs Helga is pretty dead unless all three shots from an auto shot hit an alien and kill it. Doors are death, always get two or three people there before entering and send the crappy guy in first.
oh you guys might not believe this, but Helga totally lived. She was able to shoot and kill two of the aliens, and the other fled into another room. I had my two other rookies move in and then when the alien poked his head out I unleashed the fury.
or no, she killed one alien, another rookie came in and killed another, and then my turn was over and the third alien fled. Helga is still awesome though.
But no first mission, 8 kills to three losses? Yeah, that's pretty good. The game has a weird rating system. Now get those Laser Rifles researched so you have actually good guns!
Mikhail Belov got promoted to Sergeant. That means he's a total badass right? I'm sure it'll give him tons of cred in Base Awesome amongst the rookies.
oh and a few rookies are now squaddies (including Helga)! That sounds like the rank you get when you complete something and not die. Like getting in a tank and putting on your seat belt then turning it on. "Congrats, you might not totally suck someday!"
Heavy Plasma would be good too but it'll take a long time and you won't really make much use of that weapon for a bit. It takes a long time even with 50 scientists. But will lead to the best craft weapon which you can't actually build yet because you'll need Elerium which only comes from alien bases and landed UFOs. The other Plasma weapons aren't really worth much besides being sold for extra cash as far as I'm concerned, but some people like the rifles I think.
Continuing Lasers wouldn't be terrible either actually since it gets you laser tanks which are pretty nice and cheaper to keep around if maybe slower to replace; also the Laser Cannon, a really shitty craft weapon that is the lord of the power gamer because it happens to be the single most profitable item for manufacturing and selling.
You can actually get by researching whatever seems most useful to you, I'd only suggest dropping everything to research a live Alien Navigator or Sectoid Leader for the stuff they lead to.

Yeah I'd have to agree there. Sadly you need to expect a death or two at least in every mission you go on, especially early on when you are not only learning how to play but don't have a lot of survivability due to no armor, no medi-kit, and less than ideal weapons. And even then you can still make stupid mistakes (like that battleship mission I mentioned earlier) or just get caught in a bad situation.
And for the most part promotions don't actually mean too much. There's no real advantage for the individual who gets promotions as far as I know (except they might have increased their stats more than others I think, but if they were bad to begin with it still might mean someone else has higher overall stats), but if they end up dying during a mission the higher the rank they are the more the morale of lower rank troops will fall. Because of that some people like to hide their commanders inside the Skyranger or close to it rather than send them out into the field to try and minimize the chance they will die. Personally I send everyone in regardless because I like to have the higher ranking guys leading the troops into battle and be by their side when going into danger.
And laser cannon tanks are definitely nice and MUCH better than the normal cannon tanks, but sometimes having rocket tanks is more important. Depends on your playing style, really.
remember that having one high rank officer and 10 give you mostly the same bonus, so if you have lot's of soldiers, bring only a few high rank with a lot of rookies...
also, i am the only one that saves before every turn in battle? i think i never permanently lost a unit in all my years of play...
protip: the game is borked and you will NEVER have the advantage, even if you do.
I don't think I even did that when I was younger, granted we had an editor that allowed you to resurrect your guys which I used all the time after battles so it's more or less the same.
I play with deaths included all the time now though because while there are cheap moments where you die in a stupid fashion, others are because of me screwing up and the game is punishing me for it. In a way it's helped me play better because of that constant fear someone is going to die this turn and it creates that need to find ways to minimize the death toll if I can. It's also why grenades and explosive weapons became so important in my strategy nowadays.
Well in the end as long as you have fun with it, it shouldn't matter how you play the game. It's not like your play style directly interferes with someone else like a multiplayer game would. Besides, you are still going through the battles and have to deal with taking down the aliens even if you are constantly reloading.
Guess I can't blame you since I just did the same thing with Jagged Alliance 2 recently due to how much I was dying in it. Trying to get through those missions without losing everyone is painful enough as it is. Think I've gotten used to it with X-COM at this point or something, plus the fact that I do have an infinite amount of replacements should I lose someone compared to a fixed number like JA has.
