As seen in Dragonfang's Kraid First TAS, it's possible to charge a shinespark the first time you enter the east shaft of Norfair (in Kraid first, of course), climb up to the lava+dragons door, charge a shine on the slope before the door, and spark along the top of said lava/dragon room. This likely saves several seconds if pulled off, since you don't have to muck about clinging to five or so edges to cross the lava unscathed.
The problem is, I've tried it several dozen times, and I've only barely started getting the hang of it. Tonight I actually managed to get that shinecharge before the door. I got it four times, in fact. But, uh...I underestimated the trouble I had in actually sparking at the right height. I assumed it had been real simple, just get CLOSE to the ceiling, and shoot/jump at pretty much the same time. Apparently, the room for error is slightly more than I assumed.
The thing is, this is still definitely possible to pull off, but it's really freaking tough. In a speedrun, the selection of save stations make doing this trick an absolute nightmare, since I personally choose the ideal stations right before Kraid. The next...POSSIBLE save station option is at the very start of Norfair, before grapple, but this makes the second segment only 2 minutes long (or on Hard, probably 2.5-3). An option for a third save station is right before the larvae, but some might be opposed to this because it probably costs slightly more because running through it nonstop lets you speed boost and jump clean through a plant tentacle, but I think it may be better to save here just because the next save is right before Ridley, so you have to fight the Larvae and get a good run through the side-hopper rooms; they're difficult tasks for speedruns.
The current Hard Mode any% run I'm plotting also has issues regarding missile management, and Aj's run from 2004 suggests the missile tank at the top of the room you charge the speed booster in is a good one to get. Considering I personally skip the one in Kraid (behind the first optional save station I don't use), I tend to agree that the one in Norfair is a great candidate. So there's a little over a second of backtracking involved to do this shinespark.

So the point of this thread, I guess, is to ask if anyone's even attempted it on console. Is it doable for a speedrunner? I'm trying to use it, but I'm also a little crazy.
