As seen in Dragonfang's Kraid First TAS, it's possible to charge a shinespark the first time you enter the east shaft of Norfair (in Kraid first, of course), climb up to the lava+dragons door, charge a shine on the slope before the door, and spark along the top of said lava/dragon room. This likely saves several seconds if pulled off, since you don't have to muck about clinging to five or so edges to cross the lava unscathed.

The problem is, I've tried it several dozen times, and I've only barely started getting the hang of it. Tonight I actually managed to get that shinecharge before the door. I got it four times, in fact. But, uh...I underestimated the trouble I had in actually sparking at the right height. I assumed it had been real simple, just get CLOSE to the ceiling, and shoot/jump at pretty much the same time. Apparently, the room for error is slightly more than I assumed.

The thing is, this is still definitely possible to pull off, but it's really freaking tough. In a speedrun, the selection of save stations make doing this trick an absolute nightmare, since I personally choose the ideal stations right before Kraid. The next...POSSIBLE save station option is at the very start of Norfair, before grapple, but this makes the second segment only 2 minutes long (or on Hard, probably 2.5-3). An option for a third save station is right before the larvae, but some might be opposed to this because it probably costs slightly more because running through it nonstop lets you speed boost and jump clean through a plant tentacle, but I think it may be better to save here just because the next save is right before Ridley, so you have to fight the Larvae and get a good run through the side-hopper rooms; they're difficult tasks for speedruns.

The current Hard Mode any% run I'm plotting also has issues regarding missile management, and Aj's run from 2004 suggests the missile tank at the top of the room you charge the speed booster in is a good one to get. Considering I personally skip the one in Kraid (behind the first optional save station I don't use), I tend to agree that the one in Norfair is a great candidate. So there's a little over a second of backtracking involved to do this shinespark.

---

So the point of this thread, I guess, is to ask if anyone's even attempted it on console. Is it doable for a speedrunner? I'm trying to use it, but I'm also a little crazy.

That spark is definitely not feasible, it has to be completely pixel-perfect. I think sparking through the lava still saves time though if you have enough energy

Um... what are you talking about?  I don't remember any Grapple Beam in that game.

Grapple is usually meant to be power grip, just as the mini-boss before Kraid is refereed to as spore spawn, it amazes me honestly. They are two different games, made like 10 years apart, for different consoles.

Sorry, I meant the one before Ridley.

I think he means the room with all the 1x1 blocks near the Ice Beam.

Indeed.

Are you sure that has to be pixel perfect? I recall occasionally being nudged up a pixel during a spark in the past. Besides, I don't recall the spark sprite being exactly that tall. As long as you hit shoot and jump at nearly the same time, you have some room for error in the timing for the shot at least.

Wait, how do you get super missile before going to norfair and w/o hi jump?

Kraid first, dude. Then you can get a super in Crateria on the path to the grip. It's the standard Hard any% route.

I don't play on hard much. Actually, I don't play ZM much at all. I thought you couldn't get Super Missiles before going to norfair for hi jump because you'd need spring ball for the Brinstar one and the other crateria one.

You do have to go through part of Norfair to get the Crateria tank, but it's just through the top-left corner of the map. As you can see, you don't need jump-ball to get the tank in Crateria, though. You're probably thinking of the regular missile tank right underneath that.

Yes, your Y position has to be above 0x100 (that is to say, 0xFF or less), and the highest position Samus can reach when she unspins is 0xFC. (Positions are measured in quarter pixels), so she has to be on that top pixel exactly

I was thinking of the one in the room where your ship is, but you can only do that after getting the fully powered suit, I think.

If not, I am such a noob.

Yeah, nope. Those are PBs, not super missiles. Sorry.

Besides, that tank doesn't even exist if the ship is there.

Also PJman: :^(

EDIT:
[18:40:27] <Dragonfangs> so I checked a bit more, now with shooting
[18:40:56] <Dragonfangs> and yeah 4 frame window
[18:41:14] <Dragonfangs> after shooting there can at most be a 1 frame gap before pressing jump again

So it's technically possible on console, I think. But I think I'm better off just going under the blocks and taking the heat. I think I usually refill on the Ice Beam statue, though, so no big deal regarding health.

Well I only said pixel perfect, not frame perfect ;-(
The problem you're facing is shooting at the right time; that being said, I think it would be easier to just press Up/Down during the jump, because that doesn't change your vertical velocity

True, but I assumed changing vertical velocity at least can't be a BAD thing, since no matter the button you press, you still hit the ceiling. Do you continue to rise for four frames after releasing jump or something?

I had previously assumed hitting the top pixel of a block during a spark pushed you up, but I guess it only bumps you to the side as you spark straight up. :^/

You continue rising while you're changing direction when not spinning were you to release Jump mid-turning. I said that because then you don't need to press ABA, but rather A-A. Less thumb movement

Interesting...though you still have to spark on the exact right frame I guess. Something to try at least.

No, Jagger. I've done it myself. You don't need frame perfect time, just keep recharging it.
once w/ High Jump (early) I wj'ed up the pillar, jumper high (spinny, not straight) and Sparked. Not too hard.
