I'm having trouble with a speed trick, and I'd like to ask for some help.
So when you leave the ice beam room, you go through a small room with moving platforms, and you can freeze them to get enough speed to mockball into the next room and under some gates. I'm having some trouble pulling this off. Aside from just having trouble inputting all the commands in a row, I keep losing speed when I press down the first time. This means that, when I do mockball, I go slowly and just barely miss getting under the gate.
Is there an easy way to do this trick? I'm probably going to cut it from my run anyways, but I should at least give it a fair shot first.
First, the easy part: It's harder to get enough speed to do the trick with just the main platform alone, and you're better off freezing the enemy on the right-hand side, to extend the ledge. That'll give you more speed.
Regarding losing speed, I can only guess that you're releasing run. After pressing RIGHT and holding RUN, you can do either of the following:
Held JUMP version:
Press and hold JUMP. Tap DOWN. Press, DOWN, DOWN-RIGHT, RIGHT just as you hit the floor.
Small JUMP version:
Tap JUMP. Tap DOWN, and press and hold JUMP. Press, DOWN, DOWN-RIGHT, RIGHT just as you hit the floor.
The hard part of this trick is getting the speed, which I eliminate by freezing the enemy. I've tried numerous times without freezing the enemy, and while it's certainlyy possibly, I kept getting caught on the gate. I find that it's much safer the other way.
Hey guys great threads on the key combinations. I've tried everything to make the ZSNES codes for the IBJ to work but they don't seem to. It's probably because I'm being a bit of a numpty, but I can't understand the codes; why is the select button a part of the code? I'm playing Super Metroid on ZSNES (latest version) and I've typed the code in perfectly, what am I doing wrong?.
As far as I can see, select isn't in those codes... Select, when used in those codes, is represented by 'SL'. If you've entered those codes, and they don't work, the only thing I can think of is that you're remapped your buttons from the default in Super Metroid. These codes are just button presses, and aren't really linked to the game as such. It's not the 'run' button, or the 'jump' button, it just records the presses as A, B, X, Y, et cetera. If you've changed the buttons, then Samus will just do random stuff instead of the required move. I presume that PJ's codes use the default setup.
In the IBJ code for the ZSNE in the earlier post, it has an 'E' press only symbol in it, even though there isn't an E button to enter. It was only when I clicked on the SL button did it come up with the 'E' symbol. Other than that I'm pretty sure everything else is right, all that happens is she bombs once, lifts and lands back, then wait for ages to bomb again. Could anyone explain the code to me?. And yes I am a litle slow wih this kind of stuff, but any help will be appreciated :).
That's because there would need to be two different codes. One would be to get the IBJ started, which is what PJ posted. You'd then need a second code once the IBJ has actually started, to continue in the correct rhythm. This cannot be done with one code, as there's no way for ZSNES to know how far you need to IBJ, and therefore when to stop it.
I'm not sure what the need to select an item, and then cancel it is. That's all the part at the end does. (From the 'E' with the green circle onward)
Lastly, I don't think ZSNES automatically loops the combinations like snes9x, so you'd have to wait the correct number of frames, and then press your IBJ button each time you wish to add another jump.
It's funny you mention snes9x because I tried the IBJ code for that as well, it was something like 'X r52 X r24 s Y' but that doesn't work for me either :(. I know it sounds like I need my hand held but I really can't see what I'm doing wrong. Advice?.
The IBj code above assumes that you're already morphed, and on the ground. Any other position, and the code wouldn't work. If you're stood, jumping, or whatever, the code would just make Samus do some random jiggling.
That code in order reads as:
Press and release X (Lay the first bomb) Wait half a second, and then wait a further 6 frames (this after waiting for the first bomb to begin exploding) Press and release X (Lay the second bomb) Wait 22 frames Press and release E (Item select) Press and release Y (Item cancel)
After the 22-frame wait, you'd want to be ready with your second code, which is for the actual IBJ, but since it's essentially waiting a number of frames, and pressing one button again, you probably won't need a code.
You can check out the timing for an IBJ (double-jump method) here. (for snes9x, but you should be able to transfer the commands)
Also, remember that this would only be effective in a normal run, not an actual TAS, as in a TAS you'd almost certainly do an IBJ with a mid-air start, where you jump as high as possible first, and then start your bombing.
Lastly, as I mentioned above, that's assuming you didn't change your buttons from the default. If you did, you'd need to alter your input to reflect thiis.
~sigh~ You in fact, only do need 1 IBJ code, the one I posted. (Lets call the hotkey E) you tap E to do the first bomb, then you hold down E, every time you hear the item cancel, you release and rehold E until the next item cancel and repeat
I got Super Metroid off the Wii Shop Channel (does that count?) and for now, I just want to get through the game (natural route). I have the speed booster and I'm stuck in Norfair. I think the Ice Beam is next (due to that column of hovering enemies in Brinstar), and I was wondering where I need to go from here. I was also wondering: how does everyone name the rooms?
I'm not sure that there are official names for each room. Do you have the wave beam yet? If not, it is located south of where you got the speed booster and will require some fancy jumping if you don't have grapple yet. You are right about getting the ice beam before you head back up the shaft in brinstar. Return to the first vertical shaft in norfair (the one with the elevator to brinstar in it) and head through the highest door on the left to get ice beam.
Can't find info on this anywhere. I am wondering about techniques for getting stuck in doorways for the x-ray climb. My goal is to x-ray climb through the boss statue room to enter tourian in a 6% run. How is the trick performed to get stuck that far in the door?
It's a boomerang effect of the game's engine. You do a spin-jump whilst speedboosting though the door, as soon as the room loads, you need to press backwards then forwards in an extremely swift motion
My boundaries were getting into lower Norfair which would require under(lava) wall jumping -- but I die too quickly.... And I have so much trouble getting the (Energy Restore trick with the PBs) to work. The Crystal Flash?
The other is getting through Maridia and escaping (the main boss's room) which would've let me snag the space jump - making the under(lava) wall jumping to get into lower Norfair easier. ...eh, I think.
Now I'm trying a minimum item / low percent run. I have 5 super missiles, 25 or 30 regular missiles, 5 PBs, and only 1 energy tank. I've gotten as far as Ridley... and I think it's going to be very tough getting past him.
I don't have high-jump, springball, x-ray scope, and no reserve tanks.
I fully expect to be annihilated by Mother Brain.
Edit: Come to think of it... I wonder what the minimum number of missiles are to get past the zebetites?
You may as well grab some extra energy tanks now. You need three to survive Mother Brain's beam anyway, so you may as well get them now, and make things a little easier.
Tap JUMP. Tap DOWN, and press and hold JUMP. Press, DOWN, DOWN-RIGHT, RIGHT just as you hit the floor.
I'm pretty convinced that this doesn't work. From my experience, pressing down without jump angles Samus's velocity down and cuts her horizontal speed. Maybe I was holding it for too long? I dunno. Anyways, though, the bit about releasing and then repressing jump was what enabled me to get this move, although I did it like this:
jump, release jump to cut vertical height, hold jump again, down, down, right.
It works well enough that I was able to do it on my first try live, in front of a bunch of people, after spending half an hour learning it the night before. So thanks. :)
