Man, I hate doing the diagonal bomb jumps needed to get early Varia. Getting to the room with the acid isn't too bad, but beating those pitfall blocks... urgh.

I could be mistaken, but I assumed the fastest route involved IBJing immediately after bombs, getting the 2 missiles and etank along the top of brinstar, drop through the leftmost shaft and go to Kraid, skip the ziplines, then get the missile tank under the normal post-bomb halls then.

And turtle, I understand it's kind of tough for some, but I personally try to ignore the pressure of not having that block to fall back on if I mess up. I think of it as a normal bomb jump.

I didn't find it to be too horribly difficult overall. The blast radius from the bombs in ZM is much greater than in super, giving alot more room for error in timing. What I did find was that it was hard to be consistent about it. I guess i don't have the patience to save and reset everytime I screw up.

Okay, really, screw Mother Brain. How am I supposed to do this?

...more specifically, is there any real trick to not getting hit by the thousand and one things trying to kill you, or does it just take an amazing amount of ~~clairvoyance and save states~~ coordination?

Depends, are you speedrunning or just playing casual? Screw Attack really makes the battle alot easier. When the glass has been broken, just jump to right before MB and kneel. Fire shots in her eye diagonal up and when she's about to shoot that eye beam, morph into a ball. Oh, and while you're there, shoot the rinka's once to freeze them. That should work. :)

Neither, I'm speed running casually. That is, I'm making an effort to go faster than a snail's pace, but not trying for any records or anything.

Anyway, I don't have Screw Attack (or Hi-Jump, which I forgot to pick up when I was in Norfair, that's going to bite me in the butt), so no easy I-Frames. I know about the "land on the very edge of her platform and kneel for an easy kill" method, and I'm sure it's very easy once you're there, but it seems that I can't freeze the Rinkas and land correctly on her platform in time to off her before the Rinkas thaw.

If you aren't going for any records it shouldn't be that hard really, Brain doesn't attack until you've hit it with four(?) missiles so you have plenty of time to freeze/kill rinkas and keep an eye on the turret fire. Just duck down on the right block, fire three missiles, check for incoming threats, deal with them, fire super missile, jump over eye beam.

If you time it wrong you'll may be knocked into the lava by one of the projectiles and have to dodge the beam again, but that's much better than getting hit by the beam and falling into the lava.

It's five missiles, actually.

Also, it's the whole "it attacks after you've recovered from being knocked off the platform" that's my main problem. Gives me no chance to reorient myself such that getting hit once almost always dooms me.

Also also, the escape is giving me a lot of trouble, too, when I do manage to kill MB (which has been thrice so far). I don't think I'll ever take Hi-Jump for granted again.
