Quote from tomatobob:
a lot of self diagnosed gamers look at the NES era as some golden age of video games where it was all great and sure the games were hard but they were supposed to be because video games were not for the 'casual crowd' like its something to be smug about.

i've never understood the appeal of very hard games. just takes longer to beat them; then you don't have time for as many other games.

Just wanted to say that for me SNES + MegaDrive days were by golden era.  I've seen gems every now and again since then as well, but not to the same degree.

Great idea, brb setting up Mega Drive.

I wonder if I'll fail because none of the controllers will work, or because I have no idea how to use channel search with my current TV. Place your bets!

Yeah, I don't even play hard mode on most games because it's just the same game except tedious 99% of the time. I like a good challenge in the game, but just being hard isn't appealing to me at all.

Picked up my Trilogy run of Echoes again, stopped after beating Boosty. I heard they made that fight easier but damn, they fucking ruined Boost Guardian. The one boss in the game that wasn't a pushover was an absolute joke this time everything dropped ultra energies and he didn't even compete a second round. Lame.

ALTERNATE ENDING DISCOVERED

The video cable is missing

BAD END

Although it doesn't come as a big surprise. I'll just tell my little brother to go search for it, because he's been keeping the console the whole time.

I thought you were gonna say you were being rushed to hospital because you dropped one of the controllers, and it broke both of your legs!aiwebs_011

I had a friend once, who fell into the letter 'C' on the front.

Perhaps they weren't as big as I remember.  Hmm... Think

Yeah, Prime is definitely a good reason to love the Cube, and I certainly love the game, but one game isn't going to automatically make one generation better than another for me, not even Prime.

That's the main reason I'd say I love the SNES era the most - It has a lot of those games that I simply love to play even 15+ years after they came out, a lot of which are among my favorites on any platform. And part of it probably has something to do with the fact that the 90s was when I could play games with my friends and family fairly often. I have many great memories of playing SMB3, SMW, Sonic 2, the DKC series, Goldeneye, etc., with my cousins that will always be there and influence my viewpoint on the matter. (I know two of those aren't from the era, but they're close enough to that time frame.)

But like I told Ark, that doesn't mean I hate the other generations at all, because all of them have something to offer me.

Got my Mega Drive working. Woo.

However, not so much my controllers. Gotta try cleaning all of them and hope one of them might work afterwards (just cleaned one, but its A and B buttons are still not working).

Crying or Very sad I always recall it with the MegaDrive pads, as I was forever switching between the SNES and the MegaDrive, and they just seemed colossal in comparison.

I recall having similar issues recently, and ended up completely taking them apart.  They're relatively simple by today's standards, so you shouldn't feel too worried about doing so.  It just lets you get to all of the parts a lot more easily.

Sunshine is SO CLOSE to 64, but something about it doesn't bring it up to 64's level of enlightened brilliance. Might be the long jump, I love that jump, but it's USELESS in Galaxy.

Difficulty leads to intensity, which leads to FUN.

Also, the best difficult games are the ones that, when mastered, can be completed in less than 1 or 2 hours.

PS2/GCN was definitely the most awesome generation, though PS/N64 was very cool too. SNES/GEN is definitely good as well, but really overrated and mostly based on nostalgia.

This generation, however, is making me feel hopeless, because I'm not liking the direction games catering to the mainstream are taking (though there are some exceptions). Only non-Wii console game I really want is Tales of Vesperia so far, which isn't much.

Actually, I am, because that sounded like you just described Silent Hill. :p Yet you're right I believe, because I feel like too many studios are putting gameplay behind and compensating their shit with graphics (Heavy Rain /facepalm). Also far too many FPS games.

Anyways, I just got my points card. Will be grabbing Castlevania Rebirth and ALTTP right after dinner. I also got the note from my local's custom office that a package arrived there, containing copies of both PSP Rockman remakes and BoF III. Play-Asia also shipped off my copy of Estpolis today.

I am going to preorder Soulsilver now.

Guess I'm spending way too much money on vidya these days.

Quote from Opium:
OK this game is getting ridiculous now.  There are so many projectiles on the screen at one time that they make up the majority of the screen, and the windows you have in which to dodge them are so tiny.  Add in the fact that you are looking downwards at what appears to be a 60 degree angle, and you are practically guessing at whether or not they are going to hit you.  Ugh.

Uh... yeah. That's a complete understatement once you get to the area I'm at now. (Just about to fight the Area 7 boss.) Right about when you reach the 4th boss, the game decides that it would be better off by having EVERYTHING shoot as many projectiles at you as possible. Bosses, normal enemies - you see it, chances are you're going to be under heavy fire.

But despite that, I'm still having a blast with this game. Controls aren't as bad as I expected after hearing all about them before I got the game, and it's definitely easy to get lost even with the map, as Opium said. While I'm enjoying the boss battles, and there's some clever designs to some of them, the fact that the game is starting to become a "let's throw everything we can at the player!" kind of uphill battle is starting to wear thin with me. I'll admit that I got extremely lucky and was able to practically max out all of my weapons due to lucky drops from the minions that the 4th boss spawns (And at this point the only one of those I still have at max is the missile), which helped me for a while until the enemies started ganging up on me.

Love the additions to the SOPHIA they have this time around, although a few of them feel like they're only used for getting to the next area and that's basically it. Don't know what everyone means by the fact that it doesn't handle as well as the NES counterpart, because once I got used to how the tools work I've been zooming around the world with few problems.
