Is it better to play on a headered or unheader rom?

Headers are useless and are only a necessity when playing the game on the SNES. The header doesn't really matter unless you're doing some hacking, in which case it's better to use an unheadered ROM

I would say do the arm pumping manually, because turbo DOES have the possibility to skip a few frames. Although I doubt it would skip more than 1 or 2 frames given a few thousand frames.

I think that the only time it could skip a frame is after loading a stat in the midst of running, that could for example put you in a position where you are supposed to press L but holding turbo does not, this however is of course easily checked if you have input display on (which I assume everyone has?)

Yeah, I have input display. Also, I'll probably switch to arm pumping with turbo since arm pumping w/o turbo just takes too long.  Wink  Also when you guys turbo arm pump do you hold the frame advance button or do you play at a slow speed?

I (yes I am TASing now) just hold down the turbo every frame. But just because of this, I will not play at a slow speed, I will play using frame advance. Also, when you record, how you do you record after you stop (or x-out). Do you do a re-record? And finally, what buttons do you use to TAS (talking mainly to Cpadolf, Tonski, and ING-X)?

Glad you finally decided to start TASing. =D>

It's not as hard as I made it seem. When you first start, don't worry if you suck.  Wink  My first TAS was so terribly awful that it was actually slower than a regular speed run. You can see that here. Good luck!

I hold frameadvance, playing at slow speed is unacceptable.

All the wrong ones Rolling Eyes  My keyboard suck so I have spread the buttons all over the place to be able to use all of them as I wish.

Run = Z
Jump = V
Shoot = Caps
Item Select = S
Aim down = F
Aim up = X
Turbo Aim down = C
Turbo Shoot = A
Start = D
Savestate = 1-0
Loadstate = F1-F10
Frame Advance = 7
Pause (exit frameadvance) = I

I use something kind of similiar to the SNES controller's layout.

Run = Numpad 2
Jump = Numpad 6
Shoot = Numpad 8
Item Select = Numpad 5
Aim down = Down
Aim up = Up
Start = Enter
Savestate 0 = Numpad 0
Savestate 1-9 = Shift + F2-F10
Loadstate 0 = Ctrl
Loadstate 1-9 = F2-F10
Frame Advance = \
Pause (exit frameadvance) = Pause/Break

Also, I pity Cpadolf's hands.

Yeah but after awhile you get used to it so it's not that bad. I can almost play acceptable in realtime even with that set now that I have gotten so used to it.

I tend to put a few save states on the letter keys for easy access in parts where you would need to reload a lot, for example slot 1 is W to save and Q to load.

I use snes9x.  I use the top row of number keys.  I have a "tooth" that is sculpted from candle wax (yes, it's true -or I could've just said I have a 'thing') ....that I use to 'mark' where I last saved.  I slide it along from 1 to 9.  Or I use that for a main save 'point' and a secondary 'thing' that marks other save points that are down from the main save point.  Just in case I need to really start over.

Rolling Eyes  *at me*

I have started pressing TAB when I get an item upgrade, or I'm moving through doors (sometimes).

You load a state in Read+Write mode while your movie is playing/recording

Thanks. Now I know why you people hate Ceres. I'm not using corner boosting, but I hope to beat the TASvid 14% before moozooh does (if at all).

Edit: Why the heck is my movie desyncing? It olny play the movie if I load from a savesate. And I don't have one at the beggining! What is going on? BTW here is my smv (it probably will not work).

Oh yeah, what time did you get in ceres (unless you wanna keep it a secret) Was it the at the time fastest 49:08 or did you find something new?

I didn't do anything for Ceres for that run, it was done by evilchen for the most part, and the time he got was 49'07.

You team up with evilchen on this run, but didn't help him in Ceres at all, although it is the final run already? I'm a bit confused, since you said quality is a very important goal for you. You certainly have somewhat more knowledge so far, which especially in Ceres would be required. Since you guys already gained 1 sec before Brinstar over a "moozooh WIP" by optimizing Zebes like crazy, I wonder why you didn't help evilchen in Ceres the same way?

I'm certain you could improve the escape time, you just shouldn't be scared to give it a try. :)

EDIT:
Fano, record on Snes9x 1.43+ v9. And don't forget to enable "WIP1 timing" and "Fake Mute Desync Workaround" in the sync settings to get maximal sync quality.

If you are using snes9x improovement9 I have no idea why it would desync, having made several hours of smv I have only once had a desync with that emulator.

Moozooh probably is not taking this run as serious as his 14% (Though certainly he is taking this serious too, 1 second over his testrun before brinstar is crazy) For his 14% run we will probably see 49:15 or something really close. (Although that depends on however he will sacrifice ingame time or not to do so)

Where can you get that emu? I think I have that version, but I want to make sure. And, I can't do a re-record thing. I make the movie read/write, play it than load a state. All it does it makes the movie cancel. I am about to stop TASing if I need to do Ceres a million times (I have done it 3 times now), just because of me not being able to re-record.

Lol don't take offence guys but it's rather funny that TAS newbies begin to do like 2-4 TASes about the same game with different goals like 7% or 14% speed and then post unoptimized WIPs that have like 1000 frames of input if the beginning isn't counted in.  Rolling Eyes

Whatever flows your boat. Maybe doing these TASes will increase your skill and someday I'll watch your smv's on TASvideos' published list. ;) As I said no offence. You're all doing a decent job.
