This is a conjoint production by me and hero of the day, it's the latest, fastest, glitchiest run of Super Metroid to date.

For more info read the submission text at TASvideos located here.

.smv file attached, to play the movie you need the latest Snes9x 1.43 emulator located here.

Good quality AVI can be found there.

6%? When did this happen?!

EDIT: I'm probably just being dumb, but when you save in Green Brinstar, the game isn't resetting for me. Not sure what to do.

EDIT2: Nevermind, I am pretty dumb indeed.

That was phenomenal! I especially love the x-ray scope acquisition, the damage boosting and hp management to get there and back was just epic.

The topic title was quite appropriate. Good work on the best Super Metroid molestation I've ever seen. 8)

Did you download the emulator I linked to?

If so, try to start it up again, sometimes it desyncs for no apparent reason, if that does not work the problem is probably your ROM.

I'm uploading an mp4 of it anyway on filefront for whoever can't play the smv. Should be up in about 20 minutes.

Alright, thanks for a non-smv video format. My Snes9X 1.43 v11s and v12s crashed (had for the past month, and will still crash, seeing that both versions are linked in some save files) for some reason I didn't even intend to do. I sadly stick with 1.51 v2 or 1.43 v9.

The only reason I've had for any snes9x version ever crashing is having the sync samples with sound CPU setting checked, which does not work well with multicore CPU's from what I understand, so make sure that is not the problem.

My 1.43+v12-beta12 crashed after I was playing Star Fox 1, and then they both froze and ate up my processor power when I accidentally said "Full Screen", when I didn't mean to. Now it just literally freezes/lags/crashes on ANY ROM I feed it, even on 1.43+v11. Luckily v9 isn't affected (and I think it's the best movie-recorder until 1.43 v12+beta12+lua 0.05).

My comp is Windows XP Dell Dimension 8300, Intel Pentium 4 Processor, with dual CPUs.

So is there any chance at all of skipping the baby metroid with that strategy in realtime? :P

Truly amazing.. The best tool-assisted video I have ever seen.
@072: There are several strategies, but yes, escaping the Metroid has been proven possible in real-time.

The only method I've heard of takes a long time and isn't worth it though.

Doing it might be possible to learn to do with at least a 10% success rate, but doing it fast enough to be worth it is just ridiculously hard.

Well my idea was to mimic everything you did as closely as I can. Would I be able to get that to work?

Also, would Speed Booster/High Jump/Space Jump help at all?

No mimicking everything I do won't work, this was extremely hard to do even with frameadvance and rerecords, being inside him an escaping him by morphballing requires perfect jumping height and to morph at the exact right time, and at the end running away from it requires perfect armpumping.

If doing the skip manually hijump would probably help, maybe spacejump too.

Here is a easier version of the skip, which still is faster if done good, but I think it is too to be reliable.

And here is a smv of the skip done in realtime, but still with a lot of rerecords, and as you can see it is a lot slower than just getting grabbed.

EDIT: The movie has now been encoded at tasvideos so a good quality AVI is now available here.

In a WR run, the difficulty of a trick is irrelevant. If it's possible to duplicate what Saturn does in that first smv, I will. Even if it saves less than 3 seconds, the shock value is completely worth it. ;)

Well the thing is that I don't know if it is doable at all in realtime, at least not without wasting another 30 seconds over Saturns smv (these are only assumptions, so feel free to practice the skip and prove me wrong).
