I've been thinking of this and how would I configure on to have very good controls. This is what I've thought:

-Tilt wiimote and nunchuk to toggle/cancel items
-Z and c, one for aiming in a direction(possibly downwards) and the other for running
-Control pad to aim upwards
-A for jumping
-B for shooting
-the remaining buttons for Start and miscellaneous functions like savestates

Share your opinions on what a perfect setup would be.

Take classic controller, plug it in...

Is Classic controller's D-pad tighter than the SNES's? Cause if it is, I can always use that for my unassisted speedruns. :)

I don't really think it is, actually. Lots of times when using the Classic I'll accidentally crouch or enter Morph Ball mode when I'm just trying to run left or right.

Then what is the tightest controller for that game? (Yes I know this has been asked before.)

The original SNES controller probably. The 'Cube's is probably pretty good, if you don't mind its tininess.

I thought the topic was about a great controler scheme for a wiimote >_>

People established that that's probably not a good idea, so the topic changed a bit.

I still can't tell if my SNES controller is just old or if its control pad is  supposed to be looser than the GBC control pad.

I just noticed this topic mentioned a classic controller and I used that as an opportunity to ask if it was tighter. I still don't know if the SNES controller is supposed to be this unstable though. Half the time when I turn around I accidentally press 2 directions at once.

Edit: Ark, how often do you (personally) accidentally press diagonal on the CC?

Hmmm, same here with my SNES controller. Maybe it isn't old and worn out, especially since my N64 controller feels the same. In that case, I need to ask the experienced speedrunners: How do you guys overcome the SNES controller's tendence to make you press diagonally?

ING-X: These must be the problems you're having with your SNES controller.

I figure the D-Pad for the SNES must be so small that diagonals cannot be avoided.

Or the rubber part inside is worn so bad that it doesn't have as much resistance when being pressed.

If it's the first case: then buying a new one won't do any good.

If it's the 2nd case: then buy a new one already! :P

At this point you might as well flip a coin to see what you want to do.  If you don't like the outcome of the coin, then maybe you truly know what you want.

The SNES control pad is (I think) exactly as big as the N64 controller. I guess that means it's not the first case. Right?

I'm going be technical just for clairity purposes.

Instead of saying 'Controller' I'm going to say 'D-Pad' (for Directional Pad).

I believe the SNES D-Pad, and the area of the controller case surrounding it are more FLAT than compared to the N64 D-Pad and it's controller case.  Also, if my memory serves me correctly, the SNES D-Pad is smaller than the N64s D-Pad.

But not having either (anymore) I can't say with 100% certaintyEmbarassed

As for your question...

Hmmm...  Well, if you have an N64 controller (I can't recall if you ever said you did or not) and have no problems with diagonals getting in the way while using the D-Pad...  Then it's likely your SNES pad is worn out.  :|  *shrugs*

I do have a N64 controller. I have 3 made by Nintendo and 2 made by InterAct (or whoever the hell makes those SuperPad controllers). The SNES one feels pretty much the same as the N64 ones (made by Nintendo), but I do agree the SNES one feels flatter. Hold on a sec.

*goes and feels both D-pads*

Yeah, they both feel the same. I do think it's important to note that *I think* I didn't always have these diagonal issues. I first noticed them about a month after I got the SNES when i was trying to wall jump up to the Craterian Gauntlet. I also probably should note that the SNES came with 2 controllers but I lost one.  Embarassed

Sorry for the double post, but I know that if I edited the post I already made no one would notice it, and this is very important.

I think I figured out the answer to my problem. I have tested all the control pads in my house (except for the DS and SP ones) and they all feel the same. Therefore, I have concluded that the SNES control pad is a bit too big for my thumb. I have discovered that this issue can be avoided if I only put the tip of my thumb on the Dpad. I would like to thank Gaius_4 for pointing out this possibility for me. I'll probably try it out later today. Thanks for your support!  grin new

I think editing posts flags the topic the same way a new post does.

Why not look into the GC controller? I found it satisfactory on SM. Obviously the default controls need to be changed though.

I used the control stick on the GC, and it was just as bad as the SNES controller. Unless you're referring to using the D-pad, in which case I'll probably try it out.
