oh my sparky, as soon as i think ive got a good idea going, youve already had the same idea, refined it, mastered it, and then implemented it. your just too good.

Sparky, in segment 6 (the cutscene version in your testrun) do you think you can somehow scan dash one of those green stink guys to reach the door ahead a bit quicker? The angle is pretty bad for scan dashing so its probably a bad idea but what do you think?

Edit: Referring to 01:10 (to 01:13) in segment 6.

Sorry for doubleposting aiwebs_013. Just noticed something else. In segment 12 at 03:21, you could have jumped down in the end of your scanning instead of waiting to entirely scan it and then jumping down. Am I right?  Embarassed  But something tells me that someone else has mentioned this before. Was it perhaps rekameohs?

Ok so you know how when you are going to get the power bomb, right after you kill the invisible drone it shows a lot of the electric maze, so if you took a picture and paused the game, you can figure out a lot of the maze without running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I wonder if this would be legal in a speed run or if it would be considered a tool assisted thing.

The pursuit of a 0:59 run continues!  :P  Here are some possible timesavers I thought of when I watched kips run for the 60th time. First of all, is it possible to fire the chozo ghosts with missiles? I cannot try it myself as I have a Wii now and dont have a Gamecube controller. Anyway, if its possible, then we should be able to save lots of seconds by utilizing the missile trick; firing rapidly. This obviously refers to the Chozo fight when you revisit Flaahgra's stage to obtain the first artifact. Now about Chozo ghosts, if it works hitting them with missiles then the second Chozo ghost fight should save some time. The second fight (only one Chozo ghost) is when you are in that room with the giant Chozo statue.

Furthermore on utilizing the missile trick, I saw two occasions where kip hesitated to use the remaining of his missiles or had none missiles left. First one is when he fought that big pirate to obtain the artifact of Warrior (Phazon Mines, Elite Research). He stopped firing missiles when he had 4 missiles left and began shooting charged Plasma beams. I think the reason for that is that he wanted to keep a few missiles for the second pirate battle (for reference: watch kips segment 9, 7:50) which is pretty understandable. However, there might be a solution to this. Earlier when he fought that big pirate to get the artifact of Warrior, he obviously used a power bomb to blow up its capsule and when he did that, he killed the two pirates standing nearby and he got HP refills for killing them. In my experience, the chance of getting missile refills are a lot bigger if your health is 100%. So the conclusion is if you could try not getting hit before the fight, you can get 2x5 missile refills! Which means, both the important pirate fights would be over faster and save seconds.

This suggestion might be too demanding but hey any timesaver counts to achieve a 0:59 run. Same segment (= 9, 6:22), you should try reaching the above ledge by not waisting 2 seconds turning around and then make the jump. You can do this while you are jumping. In other words, there must not be any hesitation at all! Speedrun like there are thousand Roman soldiers whipping your back with their fearsome whip!

Final possible timesaver: final segment, first metroid prime fight. I got the feeling it should definitely be better and faster to fire (through missiles since you dont need them anymore so you dont need to spare them) those two glowing balls fired by the boss. On one occasion, it resulted in kip moved way back and was distracted by those two glowing projectiles and lost his momentum and preparation.

Oh and once again, scan dashes... key element for the entire run of 0:59 run.

chozo ghosts are only weak to power beam. other points are good though (though of course kip's final boss fight sucks because he just did whatever he needed to get 1:04).

I would be delighted to find more of these little timesavers but you know, it would be more encouraging if I knew someone is actually planning to work on it :(

I really want to try this but I haven't had time till now. I can speedrun pretty well but I definatly need to improve to beat 1:04. I have a dvd recorder so the videos won't be a problem. I hope I can even get under 1:04! So yeah I'm going to start trying to run it in under an hour.

i found a few things... don't know if they're discovered or not.

You can clear waste disposal without dropping down, bombing and boosting upward if you boost before that with good timing (you hit the edge, bounce up a bit, and barely make it to the other side, with all of your speed still with you).

you can scan dash off of the first puddle spore in geo core to get through the middle of the room faster.

A well angled scan dash clears magmoor workstation with ease.

You don't get energy refills from boxes in the drone room after the invisible drone fight (at least from 5 boxes i got absolutely nothing).

In the room with two wave troopers and three power troopers, if you jump to the side of the room with the map station and fire at the one power trooper on the other side (he doesnt know you're there, of course), he'll likely die without firing back at all.

You could probably scan dash from the first spider block in Geo core to get to the door.

You can scan dash off of a stalactite to get to the stalactite-knock-down ledge in the room with the disappearing floaterthing.  From there you can easily dash to the save room.

I don,t know is this much faster but it can save 2-3 seconds.

I find bsj method in reflecting pool (stone toad room). Jump double bsj onto the upper ledge front of door. You don,t need toad ghetto and this can be save little bit time.

This not too hard, but it took couple tries first time.

Forgive me if I am noob, but is scan-dashing everywhere plausible at all? It seems to me that if it was put to the same level of use that backwalking is in OOT, you could cut your time by retarded amounts.

Obviously you need scannable objects to scan-dash, but... like... there's a lot of scannable objects in Prime. ^___^ If this worked, it could be the next level of Prime running...

scan-dashing everywhere is basically already done, but afaik, boosting is generally faster than dashing.

In which runs is it done? I never see it happen besides places where the player needs to jump large gaps.

And I didn't think of boosting. :'( Still, there are times when runners move on foot even after collecting Boost... you could probably squeeze a minute or two of progress into a run if you scan-dashed whenever possible on foot.

my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
sometimes, the uneven terrain makes the boost ball go all over the place instead of straight.

and there's times when you need to jump over some stuff so it's faster to just walk and jump instead of boosting, un-morphing, jump and then morphing again.

that's what i've noticed.

I find alterante method skip frozen spike morph ball tunnel on PAL versio.

This method is millions times easier than current WR method. I trying WR method almost one hour and i manage that only one time, that R-jump is extremely darn hard IMO, it doesn,t work never. But my own method is pretty easy.

Jump onto the invisble slant and jump again onto the upper ledge. This is almost as fast as R-jump method, but much easier way skip that morph ball tunnel in frozen spike. Nice trick IMO.

I timed this. This is 6 seconds faster than orginal way. Morph ball tunnel route took 10 seconds, invisble slant jump took 4 seconds.

***********************

Is anybody trying ghetto method in vent shaft half pipe without boost ball? I am pretty sure it is possible. I was very close couple times. I think if you can made max heights getto jump, it is even possible across vent shaft half pipe with ghetto, without boost ball.

Nice! That frozen pike thing is very usefull in single segment runs becouse that the r-jump is indeed pretty hard. And for vent shaft, I think the first thing people tried was a ghetto jump and I don't think you can make it. I tried it myselfe also using a puffer to give some sort of boost upwards but it only seems to slow you down.

You can enter the sunchamber secret world using the second mirror instead of the fourth, eliminating the need to use the non-genius method on Flaagra the first three rounds.

Fight Flaagra using genius method on the last three mirror flips, so that second mirror is still up. Go to ledge where you get varia and turn around so you face the flower in the center of the room. Continue with the normal Sunchamber secret world method except use the ledge to your LEFT. Jump along the wall and land just before the second pillar thing protruding from the wall. I find that holding left on the joystick helps you keep balance on the teeny ledge. From here, L lock spring space jump to the mirror and continue the normal way.

The Sunchamber SW/floaty jump/ Flaagra fight is faster this way, although I don't see why anyone would go into this sw in a speed run...

I have couple speedtrick questions, because i am curious.

1: First questions is frigate escape. When i watch that Stefan van dijike PAL frigate escape, i see he walking faster than me. He have always almost 2 seconds ahead for me, everytime before space pirate room.  I don,t make any mistake, but still that 2 seconds before first space pirate room sounds like impossible. His sub time was 6.39.8 and my best ever is 6.38.0

He use jump style move? Use he something special jump when he walking?

My best frigate is 4.13.8x time left. I think 4.14 can be lowest if everysingle part working as perfect as i want. It is weird. Stefan get 4.23. His everysingle room is almost 1-2 seconds faster than me.

Is it jump style faster than walking? I trying both style, but i don,t can jump as fast than Stefan.

2: Second questions. I am curious what is this Ridley fly phase skip speedtrick? Is it 100% lucky or can you control that?

I think it is at least very hard, because Zoid said it is very rarery. But my opinion it looks very easy, but still it doesn,t work never.

All you have to do is press L right after you jumped to get more speed into the jump. If you don't do that, than jumping is just as fast/slow as walking.

I think its better to perfect your run rather than doing a crazy trick like the ridley fly by skip. And as far as I know it has never been done on the pal version. If you realy want to try it, zoid can help you out I think. And good luck on bringing your time down to sub 1:30 :)

30th aug post*********

Thanks Stefan.

That fly phase skip still interested me, because when i watch Zoid video it looks very easy. He shots only plasma beams against him and Rildey skip his fly phase

Is it that Fly phase skip 100% luck? or is it only very hard? I remember pirate trying that his 100% run, but he not never completed that.

EDIT: 5th Sep**************************

I probably found new speedtrick for 100% game.
Ruined nursey Morph ball maze skip:

-You can get M-expansion without morph ball maze.
-this is pretty difficult time saver, i think this is new, because Metroid2002 main page don,t includes that.

-There is two invisble slant.
1:onto the vine front of the door
2:front of missile expansion.

put one bomb when you are onto the last invisible slant. If you are luck enought you can get that M-expansion without MB maze.

I don,t really know is this new time saver, because i don,t never watching any 100% runs. But i don,t find that in main page, i think this can be new.

always move fast
as far as i know, as far as anyone knows, the extra plasma shot just before ridley flies under is needed.  from there, nobody is quite sure what exactly triggers it, but once in a long, long while the fly-by will be skipped.
