My fastest speed run on the console (PAL version) so far is 57 minutes and apart from improving a few performance errors, i.e. wall jumping, I'm really not sure how to reduce it much more than that.

What is the "Best route" to complete the game on a PAL any% run.

at the moment I follow this path...
morphball + one of the first missile packs
bombs
early super missile (skip reserve tank)
spazar
early kraid
early ice beam
speed booster
early wave
high jump
power bomb
Early WS
Gravity  (enter maridia through the tube)
Space jump
Kill ridley (don't collect the energy tank after him)
Go to motherbrain, collecting 0 energy tanks along the way (not sure which path is fastest but head back up through blue brinstar).
(i do use the zebetite glitch)

Can this path be improved?

Edit: I forgot to mention, this path is segmented. I save at four different locations, Pre-phantoon, Pre-Botwoon, Pre- Draygon and pre-Ridley. (Mainly because I'm not confident with my boss strategies  :(  )

First of all early ice? AFAIK you gain nothing on doing that, second, Speed and wave before highjump? I take it that you use ice to do so... Instead go Highjump, speed, wave, and then ice.

Try not to save before draygon.

And you should take the energy tank after ridley. Doing so you can risk more on your way back (like running through the lava 2 rooms after ridley and shinecharge through metal pirate room.)

Finally it's faster to take the maridia path back to crateria before going to tourian, especially if you usually like to recharge before going there.

You didn't wrote how many items you take so im also going to list the best items to take.

4-5 Energy tanks. 1 before green brinstar, 1 after kraid, 1 before highjump, 1 after botwoon (optional, only take if your not confident on fighting draygon without it.) 1 after ridley.

25-30 Missiles. 1 After morphball (duh) 1 before charge 1 after highjump, 1 before speedbooster (optional, can make draygon fight easier if you don't use shinecharge on him.) 1 before wave, 1 before WS.

15 Smissiles. 1 At green brinstar, 1 after phantoon, 1 a couple rooms before botwoon.

5 PB (you know were)

Other than that all the usual items like all beams.

Aside from all this the only thing you could do is to:

1 Watch hotarubis and smokeys runs.

2 Learn all the up to date boss strategies like phantoon 2 round (or        3-round if you don't want to go that hardcore yet) Draygon 2-3 round (by learning short charge) Botwoon 1-2 Round (by using a pb shield)

3 Learn short charge!! Saves tons of time at some places like LN pillar room, pre gravity room and draygon.

4 Master flat mockball, saves time sometimes, like norfair gate hater.

CPAdolf answered it very well, but I might also add that while the Zebetite glitch is hard to explain and learn, it's actually quite easy to do. You've no doubt seen videos of it, but they really don't show what you actually have to do. After you freeze the bottom fire ring (it must be frozen almost exactly when it appears), you must spin jump so that you hit the floor and the wall at the exact same time (i.e. hit the bottom corner). Properly done, you will be hurt but take no damage. As you are flashing, QUICKLY spinjump off of, then back on to, the spot you just were. THEN jump through the Zebetite.

It takes a little practice, but like the mockball, once you get it once, it's a cinch. It also saves nearly a minute.

A good description of both types of Zebetite skip can be found on the Super Metroid Tricks page on TASVideos

My own description:

The Ice Method

Freeze the Rinka that spawns under the Zebetite before it can move.

Get some invincibility time (ie. get hurt), you can get hurt without taking any damage by spin jumping into the Rinka you just froze.

Now spin jump into the Rinka you just froze and DON'T move away from the Zebetite[/u] (ie. hold left) as you are now just inside of the Zebetite, if you jumped into the Rinka to get the invincibility time, you still have to spin jump into it again.

Now jump into the Zebetite, and run through before you get knocked back (this is what you needed the invincibility for).

The Speed Method

You can do this with either a short charge or the Blue Suit.

Run under the ledge where the Zebetite is so that you hit the wall. Now do a Diagonal Spark.

You should end up just under the Zebetite inside the wall. Now Jump and immediately (ie. before you start falling) press Down. After which you can simply jump straight upwards and (providing you still have some invincibility time from the spark) run through the Zebetite.

You have to hit the floor and wall at the same time? I was pretty sure it worked as long as you spin-jump the whole way to the left.

Ah yes, a good "If you can successfully push through the first Zebetite while Samus is flashing, the others will not be there, as shown."

One can only imagine what goes on in Nate's head. <_<

Personally, I find it funny that even though the OP said they used the zebetite glitch, everyone is posting how to do it, and have turned the entire discussion into one about the glitch, even after Cpadolf quoted the OP saying that he used the glitch.

...alas, it is too late to revoke my explanation. I actually didn't see the "un" in "unnecessary." >_<

Bahaha!

It's all good. Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks Cpadolf, I can perform most of those tricks you listed, but i wasn't really aware of the usefullness of the short charge on draygon until just recently, and I'm finally figuring out how to defeat phantoon with relative ease.

I think the solution to my problem is simple. I need to perfect simple tasks i.e. walljumping. I find it harder on the console :S mainly because when i try to do the "rolling" motion of the thumb, i tend to accidently press the control pad up and samus stops spinning. grr. I also need to perfect boss strategies and save less. Guess ill try for sub-50 min's now. Thanks again.

P.S. apologies for not posting this question in the "best times" thread, I'm sure it would have been more fitting there rather than a fresh thread. ^^

For the zebetite glitch I would recommend understanding rather than learning it, that's the way i mastered it.

If I remember correctly this was the explanation on the previously mentioned method: The glitch works thanks to the frozen rinka on the tube, freezing it is critical because that way spin jumping towards the rinka sets you one pixel forward, not totally through the zebetite but inside it, the damage on purpose is used to fully go through it.

You know, sometimes reading before writing can help you to not look really really bad...

If you say that because an explanation was already posted then I'm sorry, whenever I get an idea I post it right away so i don't forget it.

If it isn't understandable then I should try and write in a more clear way. Sometimes I just write the way I understand things.

What I meant was that by reading the first post or the whole thread more thoroughly you could have avoided the same mistake that 3-4 other people did before you.

The first post clearly states that the author uses the zebite glitch Wink
