how can you guys only hold 3 keys at once? im allowed to use up to 12 keys at once. i love using a keyboard designed for windows 3.1

That's very doubtful.  Most older keyboards are, if anything, worse than modern ones.  In all my years of computing I've never EVER seen a keyboard that lets you hold more than, say, 8/9 keys at ones (and it's very picky as to which ones you can press simultaneously).  It's a limitation in how keyboards work -- all keyboards have that limitation, especially when dealing with several keys in a tight cluster (such as QW, AS, and ZX, the default for some SNES emulators).

How do you guys play on the emu? I use the keyboard, but I find it cumbersome. You guys got a usb controller or do you use the keyboard?

I use a USB controller (Nyko Air-flo Ex) for when I play on the emulator.  I haven't played it on the emu since I bought the cart, though. :/

And besides, that layout corresponds to the actual way controllers are designed (movement on the left, action on the right), so why bother with a mirrored configuration? :P

hmm, i didn't say this earlier?

it may be right hands in the right place but it's still weird because giving direction has, for me, always been what my thumb was for.  it was just like the buttons were always wrong.  though i never thought about doing it the other way.  emus just suck, i'm glad i don't have to use them to experience the greatness of the snes.

i suppose i've never tried this, but the keyboard will let you press more keys if it doesn't think your cat is stepping on the board?  weird.

Actually my newer keyboards also have more trouble with multiple keys than my older keyboards (they used a different port, but I don't remember which). I remember being able to press plenty of keys with my old ones (almost any 5, and if I experimented and picked certain ones, more than 10). I'm not sure if the standards have changed, or if I just happened to have weird keyboards when I was younger, though.
But I've noticed on newer keyboards, the keys are much more likely to lock up if you press multiple keys in a column (R, F, V) than in a row (W, E, R). Probably since you're supposed to type with only one finger per column. Ctrl and Space almost always work too.

Might as well post my config while I'm at it.
I J K L = Up Left Down Right
F D E S = A B X Y
W R = L R
Ctrl = Select, Space = Start

I get a lot of comments about using my right hand for directions. I'm not left handed, and there isn't any real reason why I do it like that, other than just habit. I could switch if I wanted probably without much trouble.
I *can* crystal flash like this, though. :P
I'm actually more comfortable on a keyboard than I am on a joypad, though. I've played on keyboards since I was 2, and played piano since around 7, so it seems more sensible to me to use my entire hand rather than just my thumb and index finger.

How exactly do you get the space time beam to work? I can't equip spazer and plasma at the same time.

Equip spazer. Highlight Hi-jump boots. Press left and the button to equip at the same time. If you do it right you should have equipped Plazma and var will appear next to it. *shrugs* Just make sure that wave is turned off and all the other beams are turned on...and you are done...*shrugs*...it's timing...

It's nowhere near as hard as it sounds. From what I know, it's much easier to equip the beam on an emu than on the console.

Yes...considering you can set one key on the keyboard for left and equip...so you just press one button and you are done...

Well, it's really no harder doing it the old fashioned way on an emu. But your way is better.
