I will start this post by acknowledging the fact that I do smoke, a lot. However, I have never let my smoking get in the way of my academic or my athletic ambitions. It is, as far as I have seen, 100% possible to smoke on a daily basis and still lead a productive, active life. I am currently a junior in Computer Engineering at VT and I still maintain good grades, still play sports every day, and still smoke everyday, to no adverse effects as far as I can tell. Obviously I would be healthier, at least to some degree if I didn't, but I am still doing very well in school/life, despite my use of weed.
I personally believe that weed should be legalized, if not for the fact that it isn't harmful to the population at large, but because of the fact that it's prohibition is detrimental to not only our population but also to our economy. Right now there are tens of thousands of people in prison (terms no shorter than one year for people convicted of felonies) for non-violent crimes related to marijuana possession and distribution. If this, completely safe (much safer than alcohol) intoxicant were legal in the United States, organized crime in areas where illegal importation of marijuana occurs would decrees, the number of people forced in to treatment for a non-issue would decrees and the number of people that we send our income taxes to in federal penitentiaries would significantly decrees.
