Well, I downloaded the latest version of SMILE and it won't edit my US version of the game. It will open and only give me File Help and where it has stuff like 733AA ect, it says to click it and no matter what I pick, it crashes. Also, this used to work for me. Not only that, I have NEVER figured out how to make it where you can actually pick items up. It just never has worked for me.

Regarding your problem, though: Firstly, i'd check you have a clean ROM.  It should be Super Metroid (JU) [!].zip (99% of the time anyway)  It should be 3072k for an unheadered version, or 3073 for a headered version.  You can always add / remove the header anyway.

Items: All items in the game are referred to as PLMs.  The pictures at the bottom of the screen are just tiles, and not items, so you cannot collect them.  To place an item, unless you want to get into hex editing, you need to change an existing PLM.  The easiest example is in the landing site.  Open SMILE, open the first room, and then scroll the screen down until you see a circle with an 'S' in it.  This is used to scroll the screen.  Right-click on it, and click 'Type'.  Scroll down to the Morph Ball, and click 'OK'.  Now drag it down next to your ship.  Save the changes, load your game, and it should be where you placed it.
