What control scheme do you think would be best for Super Metroid? As in, if you could configure the buttons however you like, what would do what?
Serious question.

Anything that would be able to make it so that you don't have to push three of the controller's face button at once. With an SNES, that causes physical pain. Since you can't set shoot, run, or jump to L or R, yet you might want to shoot or charge while jumping and running, that's bad.

Honestly, the best solution probably would have been to not have a separate run button. Yeah, that would hose a lot of tricks, but it would provide a better play experience for like everyone else.

The other good possibility is to allow L or R as run, and have the other aim button work like in the GBA Metroids where you have a diagonal-aim button that aims up or down based on which way you push. Having them both be separate buttons, while making things a little easier to aim, just doesn't do enough to justify taking up an extra button that could be used for something else.

I wish there were more buttons on the controller so I could give Item Cancel a more convenient location.  It sucks you can only assign aim up or aim down to L or R.

You can set L or R to run, at least.  Dunno about shot or jump.  I can only think of one place that I'd really want angle down, but it's somewhat annoying I can't set an otherwise unused face button to it for that one place.

I'd hate to see the run button removed.  Having automatic run that kicks in after a bit as well as a dash button that speeds Samus up immediately might be a possibility, for the people who don't want to have to press a run button; other than maintaining blue suit, are there circumstances in which one would find it undesirable to accelerate after running for a bit?  There are certainly lots of places where having the run button is desirable, so maybe having both of these would work.

Same here. IMO, Fusion/Zero Mission's speed boost system is really awful and it doesn't have a half of its theoretical functionality (see SMR for the best example of what I'd like to have seen in those two games).

In the early years I played with this setting:

Dash: A
Jump: B
Shot: X
Item Cancel: Y
Aim Up: R
Aim down: L
Item select: Select

Though after starting to improve and do more serious speedruns I switched to the default setting because it allows to handle all 3 buttons with just the thumb pretty well. Having Dash on A and Jump on B causes trouble if you need to do a Dash Jump and shot in the same time.

Jump: B
Shot: Y
Item Select: X
Item Cancel: Select
Aim up: R
Aim down: L

that the scheme i use, its pretty easy for me to handle all 4 buttons with my thumb, i just place it across A and X, i side it a little to pess B and Y

the only thing i would like would be the MZM aiming way where you use Aiming button+down

other than that a 5th button would be nice to quick cancel weapons, if i had sent my run you would have seen how i press X fast to return to 0 rather than canceling weapons

...on second thought...manual running > automatic running...

Code:
Shot Y
Jump B
Dash A
Item Select X
Item Cancel Select
Angle Up (Down) R (R + D-pad Down)
Morph Ball L

If only one of the shoulder buttons were used to do both angles, shouldn't it be L, to match ZM and Fusion?  I think if I were keeping the shoulder buttons as angle up and down it'd be L for angle up and R for angle down, in part because of L by itself being angle up in ZM/Fusion and in part because last time I played I set R to dash and had L as angle up since that's a lot more useful to me than angle down.

I'm not sure why you see two separate buttons to angle down as being less hassle than two taps of the same button to morph.  Making morph its own button would eliminate the mockball, I'd think.  Though I suppose it might make that escape after the Bomb Torizo fight easier, and maybe some other spots involving midair morphing.

Ignore all the other crap I had posted and just focus on this:

Code:
Shot Y
Jump B
Dash A
Item Select X
Item Cancel Select
Angle Up (Down) R (R + D-pad Down)
Morph Ball L

I was making this gunship unnecessarily complicated...

Also...keep in mind the actual buttons used don't matter...they're configurable...

Just give me Fusion-style aiming and I'll be happy... and a togglable moonwalk would be cool.

Code:
Action Button
Jump B
Shoot Y
Run L
Aim Up R
Aim Down R + ^
Item Select A
Item Cancel X
Pause Start
Moonwalk Select
Win ^ ^ v v < > < > B A Start

Can you do that?

Ah that's right, I got it backwards... it wasn't that run and stuff have to be face buttons, it's that aim up and down have to be shoulder buttons.

Really, the more I look at this, the more I realize that having GBA-style diagonal aiming would solve EVERYTHING through a domino effect.

I would like this, perhaps because it's so similar to ZM and Fusion.

Shoot: B
Jump: A
Aim up: L
Aim down: L + down
Run: R
Iten Select: Y
Item Cancel: X
Select: Something else

I would probably like this even if Y and X were switched.  I would like select to be something not used very often, because it can be a pain to reach across the controller to press it.

Somehow, I feel I forgot something...

I just realized that Fusion-style aiming would prevent the Crystal Flash from being able to be executed, but chances are that you'll probably change it anyways.

Crystal Flash uses the L and R buttons regardless of what function is assigned to them, I'm pretty sure.

I can attest to that.  I use L as run and R as aim up and I can still do the Crystal Flash.

laugh new nah i was just thinking of a bestway for the config that i would use. but i wished the game would allow a configuration like that then i would be using it.i know its impossible for the game to be configured that way because each button works for every command you give in the game.

extra_smug here's the config that i really have:
all the buttons are the same but one.
config:

item select: left analog

the item select button is my left analog. alittle different and it's difficult(but useful)to control with until your use to it. because i have no select button on my controller so i have no choice but to use it. also its at the top left corner of my controller.
for me i'm use to it i can equip a item in no time when in battle.

Man, using the index finger to shot in the default setting is so complicated and unneeded. Just use your middle part of the thump to switch between run and jump, and the top/tip of it for shooting. Unless you have pretty small hands it absolutely shouldn't be a problem to handle this 3 buttons with just the thumb that way.
